All I'm saying is, great QB's don't make that mistake in that situation. He's gotta know when to live for another play. It's the sort of thing we'd have expected from Weeden or Kizer.... It was a great play by Chiefs defense, as was the play that forced Chubb's fumble. There's no denying that.... I believe Bake will learn from it, and hopefully the next time he find's himself in situation with game on the line, he makes the plays he needs to make...Just a little frustrated.
It doesn't, and I'm aware... Cleveland focused the entire offseason on improving the defense, and I was just hoping that it would be noticeable. It wasn't.
I understand the process Lym, In this particular case, the New York office (to my knowledge) did not stop the game for review. Instead, the crew got together and made the reversal based on discussion, not the NFL offices. When New York is used, I believe the term is "after further review", when the New York isn't used, but the crew makes a change the term is "after further discussion". I don't think they utilized video evidence to determine the final outcome in this case.
I'm pretty sure all that is needed now is that the ref in NY buzzes the ear piece, the refs come together to confer (with the NY ref) and the decision is rendered. I don't think the game is brought to a stop anymore for a further review (with the idea being to keep things moving). I'll double check on that and see what I can find...
Another tough opening day loss for Cleveland. We played tough. It just wasn't enough. Gotta play full 60 minutes.... I'm moving my attention to Tyrod and the Texans.
22-10 at the half ain't bad. Defense didn't let them start at midfield (resulted in FG) or the Browns' 15 (resulted in TD). Not a Joe Woods apologist by any means, but I'm not gonna excoriate the guy for a Week 1 narrow loss against a Top 3 offense starting eight new bodies on defense. How he adjusts to this during the year obviously has the ability to impact my feelings. We keep seeing more of 51 and less of 28 and I'm going to have some frustration.
To clarify before we get in the weeds here - I'm talking about the instant review process, where a ref is making live time determinations without a coaches challenge (not including scoring reviews).
Agreed...If it was a 30 minute game, we win convincingly. Look, I understand that no team had a tougher week one chore than the Cleveland Browns. Just felt like we let this one get away.... I'm proud of the effort.
Appreciation thread for Week 1, before that... David Njoku > Austin Hooper. It's time to make the switch to more Njoku full-time. Guy is up after this year and it would be nice to have the TE spot locked up. He's unstoppable down the seam. Denzel Ward made a couple of really spectacular plays against Hill. Positive in a negative here, since Hill still went off for 11-197-1 but reminder that 75 of those were one play against the safety. Nick Chubb is RB1 in the NFL. Kareem Hunt may be RB2. Anthony Schwartz might be a player. Should be fun to watch his development this year. Coach of the Year (2020) continutes to be impressive -- love the aggressiveness on fourth-down and short yardage in the red zone
To add to this.. The 2020 Chiefs averaged 416 yds passing, 112 yards rushing, 528 total Against the Browns playoff 315 yds passing, 123 yards rushing, 438 total On Sunday they accumulated 324 yds passing and 73 yds rushing, 397 total Now, the Chiefs might have a diminishing skillset causing the drop in effectiveness, or the Browns have improved. Remember, this is the second time the Chiefs have played this defensive scheme, so the best offensive teams tend to improve upon stats, in this case the Chiefs did not.
Yes and yes. Browns fans had to love that 8-0 score after the first drive of the season. They were aggressive and creative and not afraid to go for it. Stefanski had the KC defense guessing for most of the day. It was fun to watch until that 4th quarter. Shocker of the day was that Schwartz led the team in targets. Wished he could have stayed on his feet on that long ball, but at least he held on, albeit after juggling it around. Obviously Anthony's gamebreaker speed is something Stefanski wants on the field a lot. Kid had a ton of snaps, and hell yeah it's going to be fun watching him develop. One other thing I really liked was that play where Landry goes in motion and then he curls back behind the tailback. That was fun stuff.
Maybe not, but not utilizing Peoples-Jones in this offense is something that I cannot understand. Unless there is something that I missed - I don't think he has done anything in his time in Cleveland to suggest that getting him more opportunities isn't warranted.
He had the start (in place of Odell) and played the second-most snaps (80%) on offense behind Landry. The problem is, he only turned that into one target and one catch for four yards. I think he'll continue to get looks and a chance, but Schwartz (who only took 53% of the offensive snaps) definitely made the most of his debut.
A lot of what happens in that Cleveland offense is scripted, and apparently that narrative only included a one time cameo appearance by Donovan yesterday.
You hit the nail on the head @Tim the scheme will change weekly depending on defensive personnel. Baker also changed the play at the line of scrimmage a lot on Sunday. There may have been more plays where DPJ was further up the progression, but Baker saw certain things and I don't think we can argue his changes from this game. Here's the thing, DPJ isn't going to sneak up on anyone this year. They are going to send the proper coverage to him. Schwartz came in as the unknown and Baker exploited that. Once teams stop giving as much to Schwartz, that will change, but I like the fact Baker is recognizing the defense and is able to adjust pre-snap.
Shesh maybe im becoming old and becoming that get off my lawn guy but enough with steelers fans whinning about the refs in a game we won (swear every year many of my fellow steelers fans sound more and more like seahawks fans).
