I'll admit it. I was thinking the same thing as Ev. I thought tonight was opening night. Forgot that Labor day is Monday. The NFL never starts before Labor day. Might have to rethink my picks.

How annoying! I was ready for the NFL to start this weekend.

This new schedule got me confused i guess. There never used to be a bye week before PS ending and the RS beginning. Will this now be the way of it every year?

Is this a rule SoCal? The NFL isn't allowed to start before Labor Day. And if so, why?


With this extra week of practise/preparation thrown into the mix now it means we will all have to go back and think very carefully about who will win the season opener. Wait no we won't BUCS ha!

 

Traditionally college football kicks off labor day weekend and then the NFL goes the week after.

The NFL would have been playing week 4 of the preseason this weekend. But eliminated that game. No idea why they didn't just move up the other 3 games. But maybe the bye week before starting is a good thing.

 

My theory on this; For years the NFL has been stretching out the season. When most of us growing up, the SB was played by early to mid January. Now we are moving into mid to late February, and why not? The NFL has nothing to compete with it for that entire month. What do ya got, the Daytona 500? That won't make a dent in NFL TV ratings. They have figured out a way to pretty much dominate the sports scene from August through February. Most of us then take about a week or two off after that, and then start diving into all the draft stuff.

 

It definitely works for me. I kinda wish the SB was at the end of Feb. For 2022 it's on the 13th....so we have made it to the middle of the month. February after the SB is a brutal sports month. There's really not much at all. March Madness is still in the distance and hockey is in midseason funk at that time. It's typically too chilly to hit the golf course so you end up watching meaningless NBA game. And you're right that gap between the SB and anything else good to watch used to be so much bigger. So no complaints here.

 

Totally agree with you guys, if they can stretch it out to the end of Feb then all the better. After the SB is always a real sports downer for me. Push the underwear olympics into the start of March if you can, draft season could def cope with being compressed a week or two.
