Pass rusher Danielle Hunter was unhappy with his contract. Now, he’s happy . . . or happier.

Hunter and the Vikings have agreed to terms on a reworked deal, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports. It’s a win-win with Hunter getting significant money sooner than later, while the Vikings get Hunter to report.

Hunter, 26, is expected to attend the team’s mandatory minicamp that starts Tuesday.

Hunter gets $5.6 million due as a signing bonus this year, according to Rapoport. The Vikings now owe Hunter an $18 million roster bonus the fifth day of the league year in 2022.

So Minnesota will have a decision to make next March: Pay Hunter $20 million or so for 2022, release him or sign him to a new deal.

Hunter had expressed dissatisfaction with his contract, which runs through 2023, because of the annual new-money average of $14.4 million.

Hunter earned Pro Bowl honors in 2018 and 2019 after making 14.5 sacks in each season. He has 54.5 sacks since the Vikings made him a third-round choice in 2015. But he missed all of the 2020 season because of a neck injury.

Vikings announce return of Sheldon Richardson

He’s back, and the Vikings Defense is instantly better.

Defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson, cut by the Browns earlier this year after two seasons in Cleveland, has returned to Minnesota. Richardson spent the 2018 season with the Vikings.

The Vikings announced the move on Tuesday morning.

Richardson, the 2013 NFL defensive rookie of the year and a first-round pick of the Jets, gives the Vikings a potent defensive tackle rotation, joining Michael Pierce and Dalvin Tomlinson. Minnesota also has beefed up the cornerback position this year, signing Patrick Peterson and Bashaud Breeland, and bringing back Mackensie Alexander.

Throw in the resolution of the Danielle Hunter impasse, and the Vikings will be much improved on that side of the ball. Add to that an actual home-field advantage and the Vikings should be able to maintain their rollercoaster of playoffs in odd-numbers years, non-playoffs in even-numbered years.

Mike Zimmer: Unvaccinated players are going to have a harder time this season

NFL teams can’t force players to get vaccinated, but Vikings coach Mike Zimmer is making clear to his players that they’ll have an easier time this season if they get the COVID-19 vaccine.

Zimmer listed the reasons players should get the vaccine after the Vikings met today with Dr. Allen Sills, the NFL’s chief medical officer.

“He talked to them a lot about the vaccine, how safe it is, how it became tested,” Zimmer said, via Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press. “He talked to them about what the protocols will be next fall, which we should hear in the next couple of days. He talked to them about why they should. . . . We’re just trying to educate these guys. They have to make their own decisions.”

Aside from the obvious health reasons that everyone should get the COVID-19 vaccine, Zimmer detailed the reasons NFL players in particular should get their shots.

“The unvaccinated players are going to have a harder time in the season,” Zimmer said. “They’re going to be wearing masks, they’ll have to social distance. They’ll have daily testings. They won’t be able to go home for bye week. They’ll have to come back here and test every day. When we go on the road, they won’t be able to go out to dinner with anybody. They’ll have to travel on buses differently, travel on planes differently. A lot of the meetings will be virtual like this, so there’s not only the safety part of being vaccinated, but as far as being part of a football team, it’s just going to be so much easier.”

Zimmer said he’s finding it easier to communicate with his fellow coaches this year now that they’re fully vaccinated and not wearing masks and distancing the way they did last year. He’s hoping his players will do their jobs and make this season easier for the entire team.

Patrick Peterson has been one of the best cornerbacks in football for the past decade. As a rookie in 2020, Justin Jefferson emerged as one of the best receivers in the league. They’re now teammates in Minnesota, and they’re pushing each other.

Already bonded by their common college football connection at LSU, they’re facing each other in practice.

On his All Things Covered podcast, Peterson explained that Jefferson did something that had never before happened to Peterson. The youngster called out Peterson.

“Justin didn’t wanna go at no other corner but me,” Peterson said. “That’s my first time I ever got called out.”

Via Heavy.com, Jefferson separately explained his approach.

“I’ve been trying to apply some of the pressure to Pat Pete,” Jefferson said. “Him being one of the top corners in the league and going up against him at practice that only makes us better as receivers. You don’t get to see a guy like Pat Pete every single game. He’s a great corner. He’s so smart. He’s so patient. Definitely trying to work some new moves on him and seeing what works and what don’t work.”

Peterson praised Jefferson’s attitude and work ethic.

“[Jefferson’s] one of those guys who comes into work he’s a pro every efficient in practice just a guy who seems like he’s been in the league for four or five years that’s very rare you can look at a second-year player like he’s been here before, ” Peterson said his podcast, via Heavy.com. “That’s a credit to his family, the way he goes about his business and what he wants his career to be. You can tell he wants to be special and he loves coming to work every day.”

Jefferson blossomed into a first-round pick. He’s now blossoming into one of the best and most important players on the Vikings, already on track to becoming their best receiver since Randy Moss. And the difference comes from the attitude. Moss was naturally special, and he often turned it on and off at a whim. Jefferson has had to work for his success, and it seems like he has no desire to ever flip the switch off. Whereas Moss said, “I play when I want to play,” Jefferson would say, “I want to play all the time.”

“When you’re a rookie first coming in, you’re kinda shy to things you don’t really know exactly what to say — you’re just getting used to everybody,” Jefferson said. “Now, going on my second year, I just feel so comfortable with these guys. . . . I’m just trying to take on that role and to be a leader.”

He has the skill and the accomplishments to do it, after catching 88 passes for 1,400 yards, an all-time rookie record for receiving yards. If Peterson’s presence pushes Jefferson to the next level (and thanks to a 17th game), Calvin Johnson’s single-season mark of 1,942 yards could be the next record to fall.

For the Vikings, there’s a much different objective to having a talent like Jefferson on the team, one that dates back to 1969, 1973, 1974, and 1976.

  14. Badd_Man1 M.V.P. Vikings

why don't they make Irv Smith Jr when their close to the endzone and the wideout from Iowa to go deep? just an idea for the WR3

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer addresses Minnesota's wide receiver three position

The Vikings have a menacing wideout duo in Adam Thielen and Justin Jefferson. But Minnesota, like so many other teams, start to drop off in talent beyond the first two wide receivers on the depth chart.

That makes the wide receiver three battle pretty important. The Vikings could use a wideout with big-play potential to fill the void at wide receiver three.

Minnesota coach Mike Zimmer recently talked about that spot:

“It’s really hard to tell,” Zimmer said. “I really like some of these guys. Some of the young guys we drafted. Even Blake Proehl, I think he’s done a nice job. We still got [Chad] Beebe. K.J. Osborn has had a really nice camp. Even [Dan] Chisena has done a really good job when we thought of him being maybe just a special teams player. They’ve all kind of grown as they’re moving forward here. Thank goodness we have some of these preseason games to get a look at some of these guys as well. But I think once we get into camp, we’ll find out a little more about some of them.”

The wide receiver Minnesota drafted, Ihmir Smith-Marsette, would be an interesting choice. It’s a big role to put on a fifth-rounder, but if Smith-Marsette can take the top off the defense every now and then, the Vikings could be looking at a changed offense.

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer: There's not 'any bigger role' for Irv Smith Jr.

After a decade as the Vikings’ mainstay tight end, Kyle Rudolph departed for the Giants this offseason.

That led many to expect a bigger role for Irv Smith Jr. in 2021, but based on what Minnesota coach Mike Zimmer has said publicly, that does not seem to be the case:

“Honestly, I don’t think it’s any bigger role for him whatsoever,” Zimmer said, per Will Ragatz of Sports Illustrated. “I think it’s a bigger role for Tyler Conklin. He’s kind of emerged as a guy that’s moving upward and with those two guys, we have a lot of weapons there. Irv always has been able to do what he’s been able to do whether Kyle was here or not. We’re excited about these two young tight ends that we have.”

I still think it’s worth pointing out that Tyler Conklin will probably not be the player that Kyle Rudolph was in a Vikings uniform. That means Smith Jr. will at least have a chance to be more of a focus in the offense. Zimmer doesn’t seem to feel that way, though.

it explains the Zimmer lack of faith he has shown in Irv Smith Jr,but does Zimmer have any faith in Ihmir Smith Marsette? ( hoping for big things from him )being Zimmer is such Defensive Minded Coach how this Offense will look will be interesting

  18. Willie Head Coach Manager News & Notes Vikings

I think this all boils down to Camp and pre-season... its going to be a 'show me what you got' type deal. Anybody and everybody has a shot and Zimmer will play the hot-hand, imo.

  19. Badd_Man1 M.V.P. Vikings

yeah this is a prove me year for Mike Zimmern or he's gone IMO Rick Spielman I think he's safe, he seems to be stuck in the 90's and early and mid 20's when teams had a Bad Ass defense and it seemed like the NFL was just flooded with OUTSTANDING RB

Vikings rookie defensive tackle Jaylen Twyman escaped serious injury on Monday after being shot four times.

His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told ESPN.com that Twyman was shot while visiting his aunt in Washington, D.C.

“Wrong place, wrong time,” Rosenhaus said. “In talking to him today, he’s going to be OK — that’s all that matters. We’re thankful he’s OK. He will make a full recovery.”

Twyman, a sixth-round pick in the April draft, played college football at Pittsburgh.

The best news is that all injuries were superficial, with no need for surgery. We wish Jaylen a speedy recovery.
