Justin Jefferson: I thought Eagles would draft me, I’m definitely glad Vikings did instead

The Eagles were second-guessed all season after the rookie wide receiver they drafted 21st overall, Jalen Reagor, proved himself vastly inferior to the wide receiver the Vikings drafted 22nd overall, Justin Jefferson.

Jefferson himself has some thoughts on that.

In an interview with GQ, Jefferson said he thought the Eagles were gong to draft him, and he wasn’t thrilled with that idea. So when the Eagles passed on him and the Vikings called, he was happy.

“Leading up to the draft, you know, they had all of those mock drafts and people sharing their opinions on who is going to go where,” Jefferson said. “A lot of people had me going to Philly. And, I thought I was going to Philly. Honestly. The funny part is, Philly was on the board and then Minnesota called me. At first, I thought it was Philly. But, I answered the phone and it was Minnesota. It’s crazy how all of that happened and everything. But, I’m definitely, definitely, definitely excited that I’m on the Vikings rather than Philly.”

Vikings fans are definitely, definitely, definitely excited that Jefferson, and not Reagor, is in Minnesota.

Report: Vikings are 'one to watch' for Northwestern OL Rashawn Slater

Minnesota has some glaring weaknesses in the trenches.

With LT Riley Reiff and DE Ifeadi Odenigbo departing, the Vikings could fill those starting positions on both lines in the NFL draft.

If Minnesota opts to do so, trading up to land Rashawn Slater would be a decent choice. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano wrote an article that featured last-minute draft nuggets and they tabbed the Vikings as one to watch for Slater.

Slater has versatility — with the ability to play both guard and tackle. That could really help Minnesota, especially if the team still doesn’t know where OL Ezra Cleveland is playing on the offensive line next season.

However, the Vikings being in on Slater would likely require a trade up, assuming he doesn’t slip considerably. An offensive line prospect of Slater’s caliber could be worth the extra draft capital. We’ll see if the Vikings think so.

Minnesota dealt the 14th pick to the New York Jets on Thursday. The Vikings received No. 23, No. 66 and No. 86 in exchange for No. 14 and No. 143.

Enter Virginia Tech OL Christian Darrisaw, who could be a big boost to the Minnesota offensive line. The Vikings took Darrisaw with No. 23 pick in the 2021 NFL draft...

I'm glad they got him Darrisaw but this always trading back is getting tiresome, this picking of players I never heard of being that the Vikings got there O-lineman will it be all Defense,I heard on of the podcast that there's no need for the Vikings to draft 3rd wr just make Irv Smith Jr. your 3rd wr and Conklin your TE

Well, Baddman... I really cant second-guess Speilman, but in my opinion he did real well by trading back. He gained more draft capitol and still landed a o-lineman, that is top-notch. With about 10 or 11 more picks (I lost track), I believe he will adress the receiver core, but that's way down the line in my opinion. He (Speilman) has a lot of wiggle room for trading also, if he chooses to do so and may still get into the 2nd round where there are still a ton of talented players on the board.

If you stop and look back, Speilman is really good at this stuff and Im not just saying that, but he is well renowned in the GM circle as a guy who gets the job done.

Next pick if I were to guess will be the Defensive line... its a top priority, imo.

yes I too think it will be D-line and a safety oh I really hate say it a cb also ( thanks Jeff Gladney ) that was a big time gamble he took that Darrisaw would be there, even though Tricky Ricky pisses me off but i can't not denied the success he has had...and pick a back up qb

Vikings love Kellen Mond, but Kirk Cousins remains the guy

The Vikings love quarterback Kellen Mond. But they don’t love him enough to turn their current depth chart upside down.

In two years, that could change.

“Kirk’s our starting quarterback,” G.M. Rick Spielman told reporters on Friday night, when asked whether he called Cousins before making Mond a third-round pick. “There’s no competition there. It’s just taking another player, it’s like, regardless of position, if we take a player in the third round or first round, I’m not calling the player and saying, ‘Hey, we may take this guy here.’ Our job is to try to get as many good players in here, and let them all come in and compete.”

They surely envision that Mond will compete. Spielman said that the Vikings had done “a lot of work” on Mond, and that he was “one of the top players on our board.”

How high was Mond on the Minnesota board?

“You see him right in that area as where the top three quarterbacks went,” Spielman said.

That’s quite a statement, and it gives the Vikings quite the answer to the contractual leverage currently held by Cousins. With $56 million due to Cousins over the next two years, a practical inability to tag him in 2023, and Cousins making it clear he’s not interested in signing an extension, the Vikings need a Plan B that could develop into Plan A.

“Honestly, I just signed the extension last offseason and it really doesn’t kick in ’til this coming year,” Cousins told PFT PM in early February. “It’s a two-year deal. Those two years begin with 2021. . . . I think it’s more about going out there next season and the year after that and playing at a high enough level that would justify being able to do another deal beyond that. That’s really where my focus is. As I said earlier, would like to be a Viking for the remainder of my career. I’ve got to play well enough to make that happen.”

If he doesn’t play well enough — or if he plays so well that he can hit the market and cash in elsewhere — the Vikings may have a guy who can become the long-term answer at the position.

The Vikings aren’t bashful about looking for a player to be groomed and developed into the starting quarterback for 10 years or longer. He becomes the latest quarterback drafted by the Vikings since their search for a replacement to Fran Tarkenton began in 1977, with a first-round pick invested in Tommy Kramer.

After that, they spent a fourth-rounder on Steve Dils in 1979, an eighth-rounder on Wade Wilson in 1981, a sixth-rounder on Steve Bono in 1985, an eleventh-rounder on Brent Pease in 1987, a ninth-rounder on Brad Johnson in 1992, a seventh-rounder on Gino Toretta in 1993, a fourth-rounder on Chad May in 1995, a first-rounder on Daunte Culpepper in 1999, a second-rounder on Tarvaris Jackson in 2006, a seventh-rounder on Tyler Thigpen in 2007, a first-rounder on Christian Ponder in 2011, a first-rounder on Teddy Bridgewater in 2014, and a seventh-rounder on Nate Stanley in 2020.

With quarterback becoming the most important position in the game and getting more important all the time, the Vikings will now get to work on developing Mond so that he can become the starter in 2023, if the Vikings decide to move on from Cousins after five years as the starter.

While Cousins faces no competition from Mond this year, if his development goes as planned the Vikings may have a viable alternative if/when Cousins struggles at all in 2022.

The more I study/read about Mond, the more there is to like... great under the radar pick, imo.
