Honestly still finding late round gems on Youtube. Sometimes I wonder how many hours real teams invest in the draft before draft day. If it's more than you think, it makes the question even more relevant, how do you F&$% it up? Probably over-thinking things at some point.
There are definitely people still available that I think could one day be starters and barring that useful roster additions. Some of it could very well be prospect fatigue
Teams spend a lot more time than any of us do. Plus they have a staff working on it and discussing it with each other. Your war room is you alone judging players on what you see. You don’t have privilege to know what is in a player’s head, heart and a lot of off field stuff still gets covered up. Need is the biggest factor teams face that can cause teams to buckle in and make a bad pick. Example the Steelers picked Artie Burns in rd 1 when he should have been a 3rd rd pick at best but the need bug was biting them and they gave into the temptation.
I just realized that the Steelers had 5 HOF rookies on their roster in 1974. Lynn Swan Jack Lambert John Stalworth Mike Webster Donnie Shell That is the holy grail of drafting
Speaking of off field stuff being covered up I’ve heard that Mac Jones’s DUI arrest was not a one time thing. Obviously nothing official but what I’ve heard.
Character and Medical is what often busts players. Part of makes drafting hard is knowing the intangibles. Remember this is a job interview and these are people. Getting to know prospects as people is something i try to scour as best I can. Vetting players in a normal year is hard, let alone with no combine, and just did the medical 'rechecks' a week or so ago. Only so much teams can do with virtual visits. Getting to know a player in your building or talking to them at one of the offseason games, (Senior Bowl E/W Shrine etc.) is helpful. Ofc, with Rico's team you can do all the work on the background of a player but know the true colors of a person only after he is drafted. Btw his twitter is lazybones or something like that. Much more than tape to evaluating players.
Yes, and I did an article way back when on my SeeBS blog (that ended up being copied and reposted elsewhere a few times - without giving me credit as the original author) - on how Atlanta's curse of not having consecutive winning seasons truly started with that same draft. Atlanta had traded their first rounder in an awful trade the prior year, and followed it up with one of the worst drafts in NFL history. Pittsburgh generally came just behind Atlanta in the draft order that year and came away with the Hall Of Fame draft.
I’m assuming you’re talking about Wilson. Yeah by all accounts he passed all the background stuff then went nuts when he came in. I believe his IG was lazy Panda I fully agree that character and medical is a large reason these guys bust. Which sucks for us on the outside as we simply can’t see that stuff unless it’s in the news
Wow... one repost of that blog article is still around... https://boards.atlantafalcons.com/topic/3881653-the-1974-draft-the-curse-begins/ One guy had a comment questioning the "Falcons open 2010 with a chance" thing, but later on some other commenter had intelligence and figured it out. Atlanta won the final game of the 2009 season to go 9-7 and finally have consecutive winning seasons for the first time in franchise history. But that game was played on January 3, 2010, and I wrote and put the article on my blog before the game was played, I think on New Year's Eve. (Even the repost was in early January 2010, and the idiot comment was less than a week after the game. You'd think the guy would be able to figure it out when the game had just been played only a few days ago...)
I'm still a bit ticked with SeeBS for the way they completely deleted all the blogs without warning at the same time they shut down the forum. It would have been nice to have a chance to retrieve copies of all of those articles I had written.
How did you make it to this site when it crashed. I know steelroc let me know to come here the day before it crashed. The only thing I miss about seebs is that there was always people around to bullshit with
Yeah that whole move was pretty cold. No warning for anybody. I was actually just thinking the other day how it was a small miracle a decent group of us had found our way over here before the surprise shutdown. Most of us could have just as easily lost contact forever.
Swagger will show up 5 minutes before and snipe me. It has to happen some time this draft. I can’t believe I haven’t been sniped yet this time
I don't remember how I got the first contact. It might have even been before CBS shut things down. I do remember that their main page still had comments active for news articles, and every article was filled with comments where people were going nuts posting "WTF" messages. Some of the comments mentioned other sites such as this one. I posted one or two myself to see if any of the remaining Falcons fans there might spot it and follow me over here. Not much luck with that though.
I'm expecting to get sniped too. But I'm guessing he'll be late, you'll snipe me, and then I'll get a work call and before I can get back on he'll pop up and take my Plan B name.
