Bernie Madoff, who is considered to be the mastermind of the biggest fraud in U.S. history, died Wednesday morning in prison, according to the Associated Press. He was 82-years-old.

Madoff died at the Federal Medical Center in Butner, North Carolina, apparently from natural causes, the AP reported. He would have turned 83 on April 29. Madoff ripped off tens of thousands of clients for as much as $65 billion and was serving year 12 of a 150-year sentence. Victims included those in the sports world such as Sandy Koufax and former New York Mets owner Fred Wilpon.
