Like the idea of getting Slater and Gainwell for the Chargers. Robinson could easily go higher in the real thing.

Marlon Williams could fit in nicely with what LA will be doing on offense. I'm interested in his pro day numbers (tomorrow) but those numbers could easily make this one of the bigger steals in the draft.

This feels like a win for Grier and company.

Chase, Darrisaw, Moehrig and Humphrey all feel like they either went where they should or were got for a decent bargain. Moehrig could sneak into the first and Humphrey could easily go higher than the bottom of the second.

I like Jordan Smith as a potential 3-4 OLB compared to being a full time 4-3 DE as a pro.

Interesting selection with Book to be the understudy to the offense led by Tua.

 

Honestly everyone I wanted to take was gone and I didn’t have a list ready, so I saw Book was still there and just went for it lol hopefully he can hold a clip board

 

Terrible time to bring this up, but doing some research and....can anyone tell me why I picked with Houston @ 7.3 ? Everywhere I look now is calling that Miami's pick, but no site explains why. I honestly can't keep track of NFL picks anymore. I swear it was easier as recently as 3-4 years ago

Phew!! Okay, it didn't seem like the kind of thing I would F up. But just so many deals since roster lock. And I'm running 4 teams, plus trying to help others manage things. I'm losing my grip on which reality I'm discussing at any given moment

 

lol! Yeah I get it. Those damn RL post-lock trades will getcha.....

 

This was a different GMO for me.

First, I was handling four separate teams – one of which (ARI) I had not seen a single game of theirs all season. My biggest fear was either bidding against myself in Free Agency or sniping myself in the Draft.

I believe I I tend to think of the GMO a bit differently than most of you. I view it as a sum product of both Free Agency and the Draft. I started out looking at each team’s key offensive and defensive ranking for 2020 and included them on the transactions page for each team on the “GMO Rosters” thread. This gave me an inkling of each team’s strengths and weakness from 30,000 feet up.

Next, I took the Lock Down roster and constructed a depth chart for each team. This gave me a visual representation of precisely where the holes in the roster were. I’m of the school where (in very few cases) you don't draft players to be starters. You draft them to become starters somewhere down the road. I gave priority to a team’s own core player Free Agents as they already knew the system/schemes in place then back filled open starting positions with Free Agents from other teams.

Once Free Agency was (for all intent and purpose) over I then put together a draft plan for each team based on team needs in conjunction with a player’s O/A ranking on my draft board. For example: if I was OTC for the Cardinals and they had a need for both a CB and a WR, I would select the one with the higher O/A ranking. (I’ll make a separate post on how I put my draft board together).

That said, I don’t view a draft based on “Steals or Stretches”. I look at it more as did it improve the overall team?

 

Well said Lyman. That is not much different from how I do it also. The end goal for the guy in charge in any offseason is to leave the team in better shape on opening day of next season than they were during the last game the season before. With an end goal always in sight of making the roster capable of playing in Superbowls.

 

The Buffalo Bills 2021 draft (continued):

My approach was more positional rather than a nuanced evaluation for each selection, since I'm not qualified to distinguish between players. I took a tiered approach and then selected who I hoped would be the best player avail. within the tier. My tiers were determined by 1) my rough determination of quality of player, 2) team need, and 3) when applicable school.

The primary team needs IMO are DL, OL, CB, and TE. I also had hoped to find a KR and I wanted to select Max Duffy, P, in the 7th, but TopDawg thwarted my plan.

My highest priority was at CB and EDGE. I preferred CB, G. Newsome, Northwestern, at 1/30, but I felt it was very likely that a good CB would be there at the bottom of the second. I did not think a very good EDGE would fall. I selected J. Phillips, EDGE, Miami, for that reason. I would have preferred A. Ojulari over Phillips but TopDawg - again! - beat me to him. Since then I've read more about Phillips and am very happy with the pick. Overall I think the strategy that netted Phillips and Campbell worked very well.

I had debated going OL - with an emphasis on G - in the first & second - and started to get antsy watching the third unfold. I gave up a 4th along with 3/30 to move up to 3/21 to take, Trey Smith, OG, Tennessee. I just did not want to lose my chance to get him. I do, however, feel that I paid a high price to move up 9 spots.

Later, I moved down a couple of times and ended up with 4 picks in the 7th. This was consistent in my attitude that 1) Buffalo did not have glaring holes and 2) I think depth players were the virtue of this draft class - the more depth the better.

I'd love for critiques of player selection. In other words, based on my perceived team needs, could I have been demonstrably better off with player X over the one I selected. Are there schematic misses in the players I selected? That's to say, did I pick a player that you do not think fits well into Buffalo's scheme?

 

I don't personally see any selections that are obvious scheme-misses. Snowden might be an odd transition, but if you're taking him to play off ball in the late 5th it's not crazy. And it's tough to critique as opinions will differ. Personally I love the Phillips pick, but hate the Campbell pick. I am decidedly lower on Campbell than consensus however. Poljan might be your best mid-round, scheme fit pick. He's developmental but the Bills definitely have openings in the TE room to develop. He has good size and is sneaky athletic. I like your last three picks. Could all be good values. Griffin could be a gem. Well done all in all. I like how you mixed the earlier picks of Campbell and T.Smith with later insurance in Griffin and Ealy. Gives the team two chances to plug a hole without investing too heavily.
