@Tim - I had to wait until I made my pick to comment on the mock draft... I agree that it's possible the real life Falcons could walk away from Matt Ryan's contract as early as year two, but it would still be costly. The approach I'm taking is to ride with Ryan for the next three years, draft a developmental candidate now, and see how the kid develops in practice this season. Most likely I would then draft another developmental candidate in rounds 1-3 next year, but so be it. In the meantime, I'd just as soon reach for my developmental prospect in the fourth round instead of reaching for him with the fourth pick. Personally, I think the media's idea that you almost have to take a QB when you can get one in the top five is a bit of lunacy. Here's the complete list of quarterbacks (20 of them) taken in the top five overall picks of the last fifteen drafts: Vince Young JaMarcus Russell Matt Ryan Matthew Stafford Mark Sanchez Sam Bradford Cam Newton Andrew Luck Robert Griffin III Blake Bortles Jameis Winston Marcus Mariota Jared Goff Carson Wentz Mitch Trubisky Baker Mayfield Sam Darnold Kyler Murray Joe Burrow Tuo Tagovaiola Sure fire, guaranteed studs one and all. Not a single whiffed pick in the bunch...
He did go through the NCAA transfer portal, arrived in Athens, went to class, and participated in spring events until everything went into lockdown mode. He should be listed as Georgia even though he opted out under the COVID provisions and didn't play. If the real Falcons picked him up in say, round three or round four, I'd be stoked. I love his developmental potential. From there it would be a matter of making sure the coaching staff had the right people to help get him there. And a bit of irony... a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, I helped beta test a SAT preparation course. One of my students in that program is now Atlanta's new QB coach.
