For our exercise here, we have to work within the confines of the information that is available to us juxtaposed to the ability to easily implement for the users.

The team trading the player away is nailed for all of the prorated bonus money (which is reflected by OTC when you choose the trade option) and the team receiving the player will need to work within the format that I laid out in order to receive any additional cap relief (already getting the player at less than what the original team was on the hook for).

    @Torgo

If your query was specifically about trading for a player after he has been extended/restructured - There is no simple method for modifying the number for the team receiving the player. The reduced amount they are getting from the extension/restructure is as good of a deal as they are going to be able to get.

The back-of-the-napkin method would be [dead money listed for trade on OTC] + [cap savings from the restructure] = new cap hit for the team thinking about trading the player away.

The cap cost for the team receiving the player will definitely be trickier, and we might have to work out the calculation at the time if it actually comes up. But I would hope that simply knowing that trading away a restructured/extended player would generate a MASSIVE cap hit would be enough to deter everyone here from doing anything that self-destructive.

Folks, it's a bad, BAD move. Just don't do it.

Well, the original query wasn't mine. I have enough of a cap disaster as it is. I'm certainly not going to pour that kind of gasoline on my cap dumpster fire.

I was only talking about the acquiring team re-working a deal after a trade to lower the base salary.

Not sure I’m picking up what you’re putting down there...are you saying the new team would use the numbers from the original team’s OTC page?

  8. Campbell Administrator Manager Commissioner

    Yep.

They just have to be aware of the difference between the base salary and cap number, and also stay in compliance with the rules for extension/restructure post-trade.

One query of my own before I screw everything up... are we allowed to extend players, or are we limited to using the "restructure" option? This would make a huge difference in my pre-free agency moves.

Thanks. The players I have in mind are eligible. Whether extending them is a wise move is a different question entirely, but I don't have much choice.

Atlanta's cap shortage isn't as deep as New Orleans or Philadelphia, but it presents a unique challenge. The team has only 39 players under contract - and that's counting the returning practice squad.

So never mind the 27.7 million number listed in red on the spreadsheet. It will take an extra 7.5 million of cap space (under the offseason "Top 51" guideline) just to sign enough undrafted rookie muppets to fill out the rest of the roster.

Makes you wonder what some of these teams are doing in the front office. I feel like I could do a masterful job at managing my cap from year to year. It’s not as if the numbers you agree to in 2020 come back to surprise you in 2022. You already knew what they were.

The only misstep to avoid is getting too caught up in that “Win now” mentality whereby you jettison too many draft picks and run yourself too hard against the cap. Otherwise just be measured.

It really, REALLY feels weird to know that we are so much more focused on fiscal responsibility and long term roster planning than the guys who were (or soon will be) fired from real GM jobs.

You'd think it would be the other way around - that the amateurs doing the mock exercise just for fun would be the nitwits mortgaging the future and the true professionals guiding the future of a multi-billion dollar league would be the conservative ones.

We do have one clear advantage, in that we can learn through error and still have the job again next year to correct past wrongs.

Funny enough I was watching Draft Day last night again, and it reminded me of one thing we might overlook with some of the front office malfunctions we witness. And that is the behind the scenes politics that some of these guys have to put up with. It could be argued that’s what started Houston’s troubles and continued them. Lord knows some of that has gone on in Washington’s front office

Glad J.J. Watt waited until after roster lock to sign with the Cardinals. Dodged a GMO bullet there.

Interesting fact posted in an article found elsewhere today... no quarterback drafted in the first round from 2009-2016 remains with the team that drafted him.

Rough stretch! I mean 2-3 years, sure. But a 7 year stretch with no bonafide “Franchise” guys...ugly!

I'm reverting Goodwin back to the 49ers as it's official contract language that came up when the new league year started. Eagles gain the 49ers' 7th round pick. This isn't a new trade between my teams.

Who's roster was Goodwin listed on at roster lock?
