My understanding is that the conversion does give current year cap relief yes, but the money pushed into future years doesnt just drive up the cap hit in those years, a sizeable proportion of the number also counts as dead cap if you cut him. I dont think you can escape out from under it, or at least i dont know how you do without extending him as mentioned earlier.

Thats what happened with Peppers, they cut him cos they couldn't afford to keep him. And while the Bears weren't paying Pep strictly speaking cos his GTD money had already been paid, there was still a sizeable dead cap hit. I cant remember the numbers but his cap hit was just too much to keep him, and while they got some relief by cutting him the dead cap hit was still v painful. Thats what i believe is coming down the pipe with Mack now. But @patg006 if you have a better angle on this cap stuff im all ears.

Wow. I just looked up Macks numbers....... how to put this.....

His cap hit in 2022 is over $30MIL!!! I dont know of any Defensive player having that number. Aaron Donald's is 22. The dead cap is epilepsy inducing, i actually undershot the mark with 20, its just under $25MIL!!

    Few thoughts here:

1- Pace has fucked the team.
2- This is what happens when you allow a GM to live but put him in desperation mode.
3- Its impossible to allow Mack to count 30+mil against the cap in 2022. Even with the cap def being bigger next year you just can't do it.
4- Its impossible to cut Mack after this season. You just cant eat $25mil. Even with regime change and nuking the entire site from orbit, i still can't imagine it.

    Conclusions(in order of importance):

Just die Virginia. Fuck you George. Fuck you Pace. Expect to see Mack sign a 1, 2 at max, year extension before the trade deadline during this season. With the lowered number they may try to trade him to a contender for a 5th or 6th...or 7th... rounder. If not they have(hopefully) at least brought his cap number under some semblance of control so that you can maybe live with it in 2022. But im not a cap expert so i dont know if that would even work.

    Fuck you all and goodnight.

Not effective roster-building at all, but what actually saves Pace's bacon is that he has (for now) a shitload of cap space for 2022. After all of his restructures a few days back--per spotrac--bears sit at 60 mil in cap space, down from ~90 mid-2020 season when Cohen's extension was the first to chip away.

    https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/chicago-bears/cap/2022/

60 mil to address Roquan's and James Daniels' extensions as well as ARob, Nichols, and Mustipher (the 5 most notable bears without contracts in 2022) before filler/depth guys.

Even if you have an objective, open mind about him as a GM, its hard to have any confidence in the guy when you've needed a QB since he started in 2015 and he's struck out multiple times but has been granted another spin of the wheel.

I don't know what his direction for the team is now/since 2018. Are you rebuilding? Retooling? Competing? I can't tell.

He's apparently now bidding against the 49ers for Andy Dalton per Biggs/Mike Garafolo--which makes no sense other than Lynch trying to drive up the price because San Fran doesn't need Dalton when they have Jimmy G, Josh Rosen, and CJ Beathard. And the fucking sad part is--watch Pace bite because Jameis Winston, Taysom Hill and Fitzmagic have all signed, leaving Alex Smith, Nick Mullens, Dalton, Brissett, Tyrod Taylor, Joe Flacco, and now Chase Daniel as consolation prizes for FA.

Pace/Nagy may not agree, but this move practically puts us in tank-mode, which I fully support.

We are back in it guys! We got a 3 time pro bowler as QB! We couldn't be happier, right?

I was going to be pissed regardless. Either give everything away for a QB or something like this. Either way, wasn't going to work. Hopefully after a few years when the wheels completely fall apart and the rebuild gets going the Packers will be HOF QB-less.

And during this offseason, when we need a QB yet again, out of the guys available, we pick up a guy we could have had last year and is complete shit.

Put me on record, this is the Giraffe part 2, get ready for a trade up for the 6th best QB in the upcoming draft folks.

49'ers take Trent Williams away with the biggest OL contract in the league. Pace is going to have to settle for scraps at OT and OL.

I'll pay attention to Bears football once he and Pace are gone. Because it's painful, right now.

  15. blang84 Legend Bears

No sarcasm from me. There's a silver lining here. Two mediocre QBs all but assures us no more than 6 wins, and with the amount of money we gave to Dalton, it means even less money to fix other holes on the roster. All this spells the end of Pace/Nagy on Black Monday 2021.

That light at the end of the tunnel just got brighter.

As long as they're not picking the next QB, I can live with a season of comically bad football. We saw players lose devotion to Nagy/Nagy begin to lose the lockerroom at times last year. Will it be Trestman level bad? We can only hope...

I would never joke or be sarcastic about a condition as serious as gingervitis...

Dalton is better than Glennon. What I don't get--is you have Nick Foles, already under contract--who is the same as Dalton at this point.

Unlike 2017, Pace wont have a big smokescreen/speculation for starting QB. There wont be a story about John Lynch giving pause for Pace trading up 1 spot before Pace told him 'you'll be comfortable with who we take.'

Nick Foles and the Ginger aren't fooling teams. The bears are desperate for a young arm and at this point its about seeing where the chips fall for QBs being drafted. I think Pace trades up if QBs are stagnant after Lawrence going #1 overall--which I think there's a chance/I'm the contrarian against the host of mock draft artists who have 5 QBs going in the top 10. If the BYU kid or the Bama kid, even the ND State kid make it to 10-12 range--Pace will trade up.

If the goal was to find a cheaper, more penalty-prone Bobby Massie then congrats. You got a run mauler RT for cheaper than 9 mil. Safe to say they couldn't afford what Trent Williams just signed for. I can't help but look at the Chargers giving Matt Feiler 2 mil extra per year for their RT position and know they had a better player. Even the Panters with Cam Erving beinga 2 year 10 mil deals is far more appealing.

Not exactly a good goal/high bar considering the offense is the reason Pace's ass is on the hot seat. There has to be OT competition via draft brought in--and I'm not talking about the next 7th rounder in Arlington Hambright.

Would that be an electric iron? A radio you have to plug in? This could be all kinds of a new experience for me. Well, not entirely new, I did wash my toaster in a sink full of water once after checking to see if it was unplugged (my eyes saw that it was). So it was still plugged in. That was a very interesting kind of tingling experience, even for me ...

    Okay that helps. Thanks blang.

On an unrelated note, what does gingervitis have to do with what is being discussed here?

Man, you guys keep me in a perpetual state of complete confusion without even trying ...

The "thats-so-Bears" reality we live in is that we could have had Dalton last year for a couple million dollars, and wouldn't have needed to waste 20+ million and a 4th round pick for Foles. But now we have both, little money to spend elsewhere, and missing our 4th round pick.

Just remember Pace got a ringing endorsement from Georgie and Teddy just 2 months ago.

What bothers me is they could have paid Foles his 20 mil guaranteed all last year--the bears left plenty of cap space on the table--so now--if Foles was on the Jax contract, he has no guaranteed $ and he can be cut. But Pace had to outsmart everybody by giving spreading out money/making sure you can't cut him without paying more...

One could make a great argument that Foles plus a 1-2-3 round pick at QB (and OT) is better than too many average-at-best cooks in the kitchen...

Bears slurpers/pundits already saying Dalton and Lazor are reunited and that's good because both had success with high success rate.

    Oooof. I'm sorry.

    Means we'll have a soul-less quarterback.

I'll admit my comment would be better in person/with a beer. One of the things I don't like about text-speak--you can't put emotion on something or you do and it's not warranted as you try to interpret it because you cant see facial expression or hear the vocal tone.
