Teams release players and then re-sign them for less $$ all the time. It's managing the salary cap. If you want him for $15.75M go for it....

 

He was given a 5 year extension (6 years on his contract after) and he was 3 years into it. You could’ve have extended him or restructured him for a lot cheaper then getting into a bidding war. If I’m reading the rules correctly

 

His current deal is for 5 years with 3 years remaining so he was ineligible for restructure/extension.
