Bonino and picks #37 and 70 headed to Minny for Luke Kunin and pick #101.
High prices to shed salary (Bonino).

Sabres traded up for #34 (JJ Peterka)
Ottawa just traded up for #44

The NYR finally moved on from Lias Anderson. He was traded to LA for #60 (used for William Cuylle, power F, Windsor, OHL).

He was taken 7th OA in what was panned at the time as a huge reach. But, he is a lot better talent than 60 OA. If his head is on straight (open to debate) then the Kings won this trade.

The Columbus Blue Jackets spent Thursday shedding contracts to clear a significant amount of salary cap space ahead of the free agent signing period on Friday.

One of the contracts on the move is veteran defenseman Ryan Murray.

The Blue Jackets announced on Thursday night that they have traded the No. 2 overall pick from the 2012 NHL draft to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for a 2021 fifth-round draft pick.

He has one year remaining on his current deal that carries a salary cap hit of $4.6 million.

Columbus setting up for a free agent push?
Earlier in the day the Blue Jackets traded defenseman Markus Nutivaara and his $2.7 million contract to Florida for forward Cliiff Pu, while they also bought out the remainder of Alexander Wennberg‘s contract. In total, all three of those moves save the Blue Jackets more than $11 million against the cap for this upcoming season.

Top center Pierre-Luc Dubois is a restricted free agent and in line for a significant raise, but the Blue Jackets currently have more than $14 million in salary cap space going into Friday. That could potentially make them a contender for pretty much any top player on the market if they choose to go that route.

It’s not a huge return for Murray, but the salary cap space is the key and it’s going to be interesting to see what they do with it. The conventional thinking might be that it puts them in a position to go after a forward, but they also just traded two defensemen on Thursday.

risky business Montreal. way too much term.
nothing new there, joining the Weber and Price contracts. although those 2 had already proven their status and durability.

Saad is a middle-sixer in Denver’s strong offense. That’s very important and he’s a SC winning vet; even more important for the Avs.

Their D has developed spectacularly in the last 2-3 years. Zadorov became expendable, and Sakic is gunning for a SC run.

Hopefully Zads has settled down his game, (he was not done a favor by playing in Buffalo as a teenager). You cannot teach size, and he’s big - even if he doesn’t play the prototypical big-man game.

This is a trade that I like for both teams

Well, this certainly helps the Vancouver Canucks offseason look a little better.

    A lot better, actually.

On Monday evening the Canucks acquired defenseman Nate Schmidt from the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for a 2022 third-round draft pick.

In terms of talent it is an absolute steal for the Canucks. Schmidt is a very good top-four defenseman that will be a huge upgrade to their blue, especially following the earlier departures of Chris Tanev and Troy Stecher. And the only thing it costs them is a mid-round pick two years from now.

In 59 games for the Golden Knights this past season he scored seven goals and added 24 assists while playing close to 22 minutes per game.

Vegas was desperate to shed salary after signing free agent defenseman Alex Pietrangelo earlier in the evening. His cap hit put them more than $8 million over the cap, forcing them to make a move to allow Pietrangelo’s contract to become official. Ideally Schmidt would have had more value to them in a trade, but every team in the league knew the situation they were in.

They will still need to shed more salary to get under the cap for the start of the season.

Vancouver still has some work to do as Jake Virtanen and Adam Gaudette remain unsigned as restricted free agents and they have just $1.9 million in salary cap space remaining.

steal for Colorado acquiring Saad. Zadorov's game is on the outs and Colorado has young D waiting for those minutes. Bowen will be an immediate upgrade there.

Vancouver was smart to grab Schmidt for the pick. Supposedly many LV players were upset about this. Of course it was needed if they were to sign Pietro.

Im an Andreas Johnsson fan, Devils got a good one.

The Colorado Avalanche and Minnesota Wild swapped veteran defensemen on Tuesday afternoon in a trade that will have Ian Cole and Greg Pateryn change teams.

Cole goes from Colorado to Minnesota, while Pateryn heads to the Avalanche.

Both players are pending unrestricted free agents after this season. Cole’s contract carries a salary cap hit of $4.25 million, while Pateryn has $2.25 million remaining on his contract. Colorado is retaining $800,000 of Coles cap number as part of the trade.

From the Minnesota side, Cole figures to be an upgrade over Pateryn at the bottom of their defense and also has a connection to current general manager Bill Guerin from their days together in Pittsburgh. Cole was a key part of the Penguins’ 2016 and 2017 Stanley Cup winning teams where Guerin was an assistant general manager. In his brief time as Wild general manager Guerin has collected several former Penguins on his roster, including Nick Bonino, Nick Bjugstad, Alex Galchenyuk (left in free agency this offseason) and now Cole.

As for the Avalanche, general manager Joe Sakic talked about Pateryn playing a “heavy” game and bringing grit to the lineup.

“Greg is a strong, veteran defenseman who plays a heavy game,” said Sakic in a statement released by the team. “He’s a hard-nosed, competitive player who can kill penalties, block shots and brings some additional grit to our back line. We thank Ian for his two years with the Avalanche, for his efforts both on the ice as well as in the community. We wish him the best of luck moving forward.”

The real intrigue though is whether or not the trade opens a roster spot for prized prospect Bowen Byram.

The Avalanche already have one of the best young defense corps in the league with Cale Makar, Sam Girard, Devon Toews, and Ryan Graves. Byram, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2019 draft, will only add to that when he arrives.

The whole Pierre-Luc Dubois saga in Columbus devolved to the ridiculous after Torts stapled him to the bench for all but 3:54 in his final game for the BJ’s. Now he’s a Winnipeg Jet.

Columbus gets Patrik Laine and Jack Roslovic with PLD and a 3rd going north.

Laine went 2 o/a, followed immediately by PLD. Roslovic had been a 1st rounder (with a pick that came from Buffalo as part of the E. Kane trade). It’s no exaggeration to call this trade a blockbuster.

Roslovic has got to be the happiest player since he’s a Columbus native. In fact, he’s still in central Ohio waiting ring for the Jets to fulfill his demand to be traded. PLD’s father is an assistant coach for the AHL Manitoba Moose. There’s a chance that he’ll resign once his current two-year bridge expires.

If Laine thrives and signs LT with Columbus then they’ll be the big winner in this trade. But everyone involved has to feel refreshed like they’ve had a full colonic.

I think it depends on what Laine decides. If he resigns then the BJ’s win the trade. If he doesn’t, then ... well it blows for Columbus. Of course they can flip him at the deadline for something. But if he’s not in Columbus long term then the Jets could be the winner.

We often applaud a trade where both teams are deemed to be winners. This may be a prime example where both teams are the losers of a trade.

Possible Dan...........Luc Dubois could end up been the catalyst of the Trade.....he has always been good at Assists and he may like playing in Canada.

    Time will tell.
