The ball going through the endzone being a touchback rule is a relic of when football was more like rugby. Not even the CFL which is MUCH more like rugby has this rule. It would have been Cleveland ball at the 1.

Seriously though as far as how the game has evolved it makes no sense. It's a relic from when it was about kicking for field position and it wasn't split off from the normal kicking rules and kept for anything.
