Kyler Murray halfway to NFL’s first 4,000-yard passing, 1,000-yard rushing season Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray is putting up numbers like no one before him in NFL history. Halfway through the 2020 season, Murray has 2,130 passing yards and 543 rushing yards. That puts him on pace to pass for 4,260 yards and run for 1,086 yards this season. That would be the first 4,000-yard passing, 1,000-yard rushing season in NFL history. No other quarterback has come particularly close to 4,000 yards passing and 1,000 yards rushing. The most passing yards ever gained by a 1,000-yard rusher was 3,127 yards by Lamar Jackson last year. The most rushing yards ever gained by a 4,000-yard passer was 706 yards by Cam Newton in 2011. In Kliff Kingbsbury’s offense, Murray is playing in a system perfect for his skills. And it’s allowing him to do things that no quarterback has done before. NBC
Baker Mayfield: A blessing to start fresh after bye week Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield‘s brief stay on the reserve/COVID-19 list ended in time for him to practice on Wednesday and continue preparing to face the Texans as they come off their bye week. The Browns hit the midpoint of their season with a 5-3 record, which provides reason to believe they can secure their first winning season since 2007. Two losses in their last three games before the bye provided some reason to think things will break the other way, but Mayfield believes the time off will be beneficial. Mayfield said the team’s “meetings were extremely productive” and that the team was able to be “extremely critical” of what they had not done well in the first eight games. That process set the stage for what Mayfield believes will be a good launching pad for the second half. “I’m very excited about getting back to work for this last journey, this run that we’re trying to make,” Mayfield said, via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “It started a long time ago, but hitting the reset button and being able to start fresh again is a blessing.” The second half opens with three teams that currently have losing records and an opportunity for the Browns to pick up some momentum to get them across the finish line with that elusive winning record. Jared Goff recharged the batteries during bye week, excited to get back on field Things did not go well for Rams quarterback Jared Goff the last time he was on the field. Goff turned the ball over four times in a 28-17 loss to the Dolphins in Week 8, which gave him something to “reflect on” during the team’s bye week. Goff did that reflection and took some time to “kind of recharge the batteries” before turning his attention toward this weekend’s game against the Seahawks. “You want to get back and get playing, especially after a result you don’t love. . . . The bye week coupled with a home game against a division [opponent] gets us going, gets us excited,” Goff said, via Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times. Goff didn’t mention it as a reason to be excited, but the Seahawks pass defense has been putrid this season and the unit could be just what the Rams need to get back on track. NBC
'Special' night for Philip Rivers as he passes Dan Marino on all-time passing list in Colts' win On a night where the Colts were rolling in all three phases, Philip Rivers managed to add an extra accolade to his already impressive resume. Needing just three yards to move into fifth place on the NFL's all-time passing yards list, Rivers completed his first pass of the game -- an 11-yard strike to rookie Jonathan Taylor -- to pass Hall of Famer (and childhood hero) Dan Marino's 61,361 yards. He finished with 308 yards and one touchdown in the Colts' 34-17 win over the Titans. "It's special, it's special," Rivers said of the accomplishment. "Those guys up there on that list, I don't know that I'm in their category and that's OK, but Dan Marino was on my wall. He was a poster on my wall as a young boy in Decatur and Athens, Alabama, so it's special. "Thankful that I've been able to play long enough. Thankful that I've been healthy enough to play over 230 in a row now and watching Dan Marino, meeting Dan Marino at the Senior Bowl, playing against his teams, it's all special. It's all just special and thankful that here, at 38, I'm still getting out here and competing and playing the game I love." Rivers' big night now places him in a top-five group that includes all-time leader Drew Brees (79,536), Tom Brady (76,969), Peyton Manning (71,940) and Brett Favre (71,838). Indianapolis kept Tennessee on its toes most of the night, opting to go with a no-huddle offense for the duration after having success with it in previous games. The veteran gunslinger looked spry, utilizing a more up-tempo approach, connecting with eight different receivers for an efficient 29-of-39, zero-turnover stat line. Indy either scored a TD or field goal on five of its eight drives and didn't punt until late in the fourth quarter. Frank Reich said after the game that he, Rivers and offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni discussed going with the no-huddle throughout the week and decided roughly 24 hours before kickoff that that would be the game plan. It turned out to be a wise decision. "Philip's just, he's in control. That puts him in the driver's seat, allows him to see everything and get us in the right play when he needs to which he did with regularity tonight," Reich said. "He's just really good in that mode and he was accurate. Good decisions, good checks in the run game, good situational football. So, he was on point tonight, for sure." After turning in a poor showing against the Ravens in Week 9, Rivers and the Colts looked sensational in a pivotal divisional matchup. They'll now have a mini-bye to rest and prepare for the Packers on Nov. 22. NFL.com
Will........I can't believe how well Old Man Rivers played vs the Titans.....he should get an automatic pass into the Hall of Fame.
Kyler Murray: It’s time for the Cardinals to contend Kyler Murray went 42-0 at Allen High School in winning three Texas state titles. He went 12-2 at Oklahoma, getting the Sooners to the College Football Playoff. So last year’s 5-10-1 record didn’t sit well with Murray. Neither did Sunday’s last-minute loss to the Dolphins, and it showed on the quarterback’s face as he quickly departed the field afterward. He is ready for the Cardinals to contend now. Not next year or the year after. “It’s time,” Murray said, via Kyle Odegard of the team website. “It’s Year 2. There’s not time to wait around and say, ‘We’ll do this in Year 6 or Year 7.’ You never know. You never know when your last snap is going to be. I’m always striving to get better, always striving to be the best.” In the past four games, Murray has a passer rating of 111.7 and is averaging 6.3 yards per carry. Since Week 5, the Cardinals are averaging 34 points per game. Murray went into the season as a long shot for the MVP award after winning offensive rookie of the year with 3,722 passing yards, 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 2019. His MVP odds have improved with him on pace for 4,260 passing yards and 1,086 rushing yards. No quarterback in the NFL ever has thrown for 4,000 yards and run for 1,000 in the same season. “I feel like I’m the best player on the field,” Murray said. “I always have the ball in my hands. It’s my job to lead the offense down the field and put touchdowns up. I don’t limit myself to any amount of time needed or years or anything like that. I’m obviously a lot more comfortable in understanding the offense. Our guys are more comfortable. We’re playing a lot better.” NBC
Carson Wentz calls Eagles’ performance “extremely frustrating” Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz turned in another ugly performance in Sunday’s loss to the Giants, and when reporters told him after the game that the offense had gone 0-for-9 on converting third downs, he was stunned. “I knew we struggled on third down, I didn’t realize we were that poor,” Wentz said, via the Times Herald. “Anytime you’re 0-for-9 you’re obviously not doing something very well. Hats off to them. They had a good game plan. That’s a good defense over there. They made it hard on us. It’s extremely frustrating.” Wentz indicated he thought the story of the game was more that the Giants’ defense played well than that the Eagles’ offense played poorly. “We don’t go into a game thinking we’re going to struggle like that and go 0-for-9 on third downs and only put up a couple points,” Wentz said. “But I’ve got to give a lot of credit to that defense. I thought we had a good game plan ready to go. They made a lot more plays than us and we didn’t deserve to win.” Wentz seems to keep running into defenses that play well, week after week. His contract makes clear that the Eagles are committed to him, but they need him to play a lot better. NBC
The mystery regarding the health of Saints quarterback Drew Brees is moving closer to a resolution. Unless it isn’t. Brees had a shoulder injury entering Sunday’s game against the 49ers. On Sunday, the team said he suffered a “ribs injury.” Brees himself called it an “accumulative thing.” NFL Media reports Brees suffered a “rib [not ribs] contusion,” and that he’ll have an MRI to determine cartilage damage on Monday. Per the report, the team is bracing for Brees “to miss some time to fully heal.” It could be that, like Peyton Manning in 2015, Brees has so many different issues that the best way to proceed entails Brees not playing at all. Regardless, it currently seems that, for the second straight year, Brees will miss one or more games due to injury. NBC
Report: Drew Brees has five fractured ribs, collapsed lung Saints quarterback Drew Brees‘ injury is reportedly more serious than first believed. Brees has five fractured ribs and a collapsed lung, Ed Werder of ESPN reports. Brees actually broke three of the ribs a week ago against the Buccaneers, but that wasn’t diagnosed until he got X-rays for two more broken ribs yesterday against the 49ers. It is unclear how much time Brees will miss, but it seems likely he’d need time to recuperate. Chargers Tyrod Taylor needed more than a month to be cleared to return from a punctured lung suffered this season, and Taylor’s injury took place when a team doctor accidentally pierced his lung with a painkilling injection, an injury that did not also include broken ribs. With Brees out, the Saints will turn to Jameis Winston or Taysom Hill (or possibly both). NBC
Great Update Will.......\+/....Beer I bet New Orleans goes with Winston. He was Rookie of the Year in 2015.
That's asking a lot. Even for Winston. dirk.........Saints do have a good O Line........so that will really help Winston.
Fortunately, it looked far worse than it turned out to be. Bears quarterback Nick Foles is day-to-day with an injury to his right hip and gluteus maximus. Coach Matt Nagy provided the update late Tuesday morning. On the first play of Chicago’s final drive of the game, Foles was thrown hard to the ground after throwing an incomplete pass. Foles seemed to be badly hurt, laying motionless before eventually being carted off. With Mitch Trubisky out due to a shoulder injury, Tyler Bray replaced Foles. The lanky signal-caller routinely takes a pounding, fearlessly standing in the pocket behind blockers who often fail to protect him from contact. The Bears have their annual bye in Week 11. The next play the Packers in Green Bay on Sunday night of Thanksgiving weekend. NBC
I wanted to see them go with Hill. But in order to do that, they'd have to restructure the entire offence. So I guess we go with Winston and get Hill on the razzle-dazzle plays. We have Atlanta this week. There's hope.
I saw during the offseason he had eye surgery and says he can see much better. But that don't mean he can throw any better. We'll see.
