  1. vvarder Franchise Player Bears

I understand why you guys haven't started this one.

Yes, the Oline is patchwork, yes Foles has been rushing throws and making really questionable choices. However, everything to me is coming back to Nagy.

    1. This "offensive genius" has the Bears near the bottom of the league in almost every category. They showed three on the screen yesterday that was 28/29/30th ranked, looking myself right now, total offense (yards) - 29th. Passing yards - 21st, rushing 32nd (!! - that's right, worse than the fucking Jets and EVERY other team), Scoring - 28th and that's WITH the garbage time points we've gotten. This is inexcusable for a coach who was brought here for his offensive expertise.
    2. As a "head coach" guy - I could not fucking BELIEVE it when they showed the Bears LEAD THE FUCKING LEAGUE in penalties. That's discipline, and that's on the fucking coaches. BWW said this team yaps too much and that's it, a culture of entitlement, when you haven't done shit except get bounced out of the playoffs in the Wildcard 2 fucking years ago. The players like him, sure, but do they really "play hard" for him? They toddle to the line without a care or any hurry when the games on the line, the oline even when healthy got pushed around. Our "veteran" players were the ones who false started on that 4th and 1 leading to 4th and 11.
    3. Questionable decisions / playcalling. I actually didn't mind going for it on 4th and 1 early, but I do question that asinine playcall which resulted in a loss of yards. 4th and 1 again ok I guess, but then 4th and 6 and you were going to still go for it? How often does he end up drawing up a play for 4 yards when we need 8? Why can he not scheme to the players he has, not the players he wants? He took at least 6 points off the board with his "aggressive" style yesterday.
    4. Is his system even any good? We've bent over backwards to give him what he wants, Howard for Monty, Mitch for Foles, etc, etc. And the end result is this dumpster fire we saw yesterday.
    5. People may point to his win/loss record, but isn't it funny how he's ridden defense to success, and that Mack arrived that first year. Who deserves more for that win/loss record, Nagy or Mack (/Fangio, etc, but you get my point).

Outside of Nagy, I'd just like to say fuck Quinn. Dude is straight up stealing a check from the Bears. I can't remember the last time I've heard his name, but I've seen #94 plenty of times chasing the play from behind and never getting home. You're playing opposite Mack and generating nothing. Huge waste of money.

  2. patg006 M.V.P. Bears

    1) I will start with the painful, yet positive. If I told you minus one run for 26 yards, the Derrick Henry had 20 carries for 42 yards on the day (he finished the day 21 carries 68 yards). On top of that, Ryan Tannehill gets sacked 3 times, had a QBR of 44, and completed under 50% of his passes. Most days, stats like this win you a football game. Credit to Chuckles. You took away the other team's best player and neutered the #5 offense in the NFL.

Roquan Smith looked like Patrick Willis yesterday.

Whether it was Mario Edwards, Bilal Nichols, or Brent Urban, the 5 tech rotation outside Hicks was dependable and making plays.

    Positives over.

    2) There was really only one bad effort by the defense. The play Eddie Jackson didn't feel like tackling AJ Brown who got half a year's worth of YAC in the 1st half.

(Dis)honorable mention. Fuck you Buster Skrine. You finally don't get pantsed/stay with your guy and stayed with Brown on a wheel/go route from the slot and you don't turn your head. Okay, so a bad play and a nickel who sucks ass and somehow ended up on the opposing team's #1 guy just because he was in the slot. My one granular 'gripe' is that Chuckles didn't just have Kyle Fuller shadow Brown. Brown is built like a tank, so why the hell is a scrawny Buster Skrine on him at any time?

    3) Yesterday was like a John Fox era-type loss. Where I just lost interest to a 'meh' state where I got up, turned off the TV at the end of the 3rd, then enjoyed a gorgeous, 70 degree Chicago afternoon.

I think this week is the 'crossroads' game. The Vikings came out and slapped around the Lions. Dalvin Cook is far more dynamic than Derrick Henry, and can hit the edge bears have been weak against in the run game. If the bears come out and get pantsed again, a downward spiral and missed playoffs are an inevitability.

What I don't know, is if Nagy's bacon is saved because *insert Covid/unpredictable season's excuse here* and because the McKaskeys are so patient they're stupid a lot of the time. Or if they get swift again like after Trestman and full stop this. In the case of the latter, Pace has to go too. But, several more comically bad games (including an embarrassing ass beating 2x by the packers) and I do think Nagy is toast. I don't care that his career record as a coach here is above 500. After 2018, he's 500 and 'sputtering' on offense would be an improvement to what we've seen the past month. Nothing has gotten better.

The fact yesterday that ZERO veteran players (looking at Leno, Ifedi, ARob, Foles) stepped up and tried to light a fire under asses makes me think losing a locker room could happen this year. And if that happens where guys just collect checks without effort like Marshall, Bennett, and company, under Nagy--I think they'll get fired. For now, Hicks, Fuller, Ejax, Mack, are saying the right things. But they are also watching the shitshow masquerading as an NFL offense.

    4) Nagy once again cant figure out how to fix a broken offense. He once again plays stupid in the press conference. He once again wont commit to giving up plays. To his credit, he was trying to come out early and get rid of the ball quickly. But he's shit-for-brains when it comes to adjusting and management. Yet another fucking game where the offense is flat to end the 1st half then comes out without adjusting to start the 2nd half, only to punt quickly and quietly.

Yet another game where Nagy needs all 11 guys to be perfect, when this offense just can't do that with the personnel. Yet another game with a lack of focus. Yet another game where the bears put distance between them and the 2nd most penalized team in the NFL. Yet another game where fans/everybody watching (including a senile old Dick Stockton and douchy Greg Jennings) can simply point out the obvious things to fix and Nagy wont.

I'm not going to rip Nagy for the execution or players available to pick his depth chart with (because there aren't good ones especially on the OLine). Hard to blame a play when Rashad Coward takes pride in being worse than J'Marcus Webb. People are already making excuses, citing players getting Covid, Halas Hall being shut down, no practice, etc as to why the OLine didn't look good. But, I'm not in a forgiving mood for that. Quenton Spain was active for the Bengals yesterday. That was unacceptable.

    5) Allen Robinson - 9 targets. Darnell Mooney - 11 targets. Jimmy Graham 6 targets. Anthony Miller 8 targets. Ryan Nall and Cordarrelle Patterson? 4 targets a piece. Monty? 3 targets. RILEY RIDLEY 2 targets (and 2 catches, looking crisp and competent--another indictment of our genius calling plays).

Cole Kmet? 0 fucking targets. Again. No talking heads know why. No players (current or past) know why. Is this Matt Nagy flipping everybody the bird? And the answer is simple. If Kmet cant run the "big boy routes" then why can't he do the simple swing passes Graham gets 2-3 per game of. Taking a TE in the 2nd round then making him a predominantly blocking TE is an indictment of competence.

    6) I apologize to Harry Heistand. I was absolutely wrong thinking he was the problem last year when it comes to the OLine. I really don't know how you can let Rashad Coward be on the roster anymore. Are there guys available via FA to help? Well--if Cordy Glenn's medicals are even average enough you have to make the call. He can play LG and LT.

Leno, Ifedi, and Coward played like shit. Bars was meh. Arlington Hambright minus a bad penalty has lots of room for improvement. In a perfect world, rounds 1-3 next year not picked by Pace go OT, OG, QB (in any order). Don't shit on my dreams here.

    7) I'm okay if Nick Foles takes the bench for Bray. Too frequently Foles makes throws that got Mitch benched. At first, I thought Blang was insane for suggesting it. Now? Fuck it. Put him in. Recycle FA QBs weekly for try outs.

    8) He's not the type, but if ARob wanted to give a huge middle finger to this organization, not one person can blame him. If I'm Arob, Pace has to overpay the shit out of me to keep me around.

    9) Monty is a nice RB. He's not great. Not special. IMO his ceiling is being part of a RB duo that could give defenses fits. But Nagy/Pace still are in charge. And in the grand scheme of things, they had a nice RB before giving him away to Philly.

I was surprised as well when I saw this, at first, and then not surprised. The bulk of these have come on the offensive side of the ball, usually with drive killing consequences. A major part of why we suck at getting points. But yes, there is a culture of entitlement that permeates the team. We all thought Club Dub was a bunch of fun in 2018, but I think everyone let that shit get to their heads, especially Nagy.

Not saying our next coach needs to be a Bill Parcells hard ass, but definitely not someone who can't even hold himself accountable and goes around preaching the touchy feely gen Z motto "Be You". The results on the field with this attitude speaks for itself. Players suck at execution, they suck at discipline, and they talk a ton of shit without having earned a damn thing.

What sunk Trestman and Emery was a highly toxic environment in the locker room and in Halas Hall. It wasn't so much the losing. If we do in fact finish under .500 with humiliating losses to the Packers, the good vibes and "Be You" attitudes could go down the toilet as players start turning on each other or the coaches, as happened in 2014. Still, Nagy can easily weasel out of any accountability by blaming not only Covid but also Pace for the o-line neglect and the QB failures. Pace in turn could point to his success on defense through drafting and free agency (mainly the latter) and throw Nagy under the bus for not developing Mitch and not succeeding with any QB given to him. I could see a scenario where Pace stays and Nagy doesn't.

Assuming the best happens and we do clean house, will Georgie bring on Ernie Acorsi again to help with the GM search? Cuz yeah that move sure as hell didn't pay off.

    100%.

But I can't help but think at least 1 of 53 players on the roster (especially defense) is pretty fucking tired of Nagy and 3 straight losses is past time to get vocal about it. Not that it matters because its he's not in the league, but Kyle Long comes immediately to mind in regard to that. He and Nagy didn't get along and he's not shy about saying he'd come back in an instant but the feeling isn't mutual.

I wish I had that optimism, because I would take a dice roll of GM candidates, even if we get Jerry Angelo part 3 because I'm optimistic that like baseball, more metrics forward thinkers will overtake the dinosaurs and eventually you may find that guy who knows what an offense is.

I see fans applauding Georgie for giving Pace/Nagy the axe. I then see them proceed to then fuck it up again by naming Chuckles Pagano HC without a GM because that is just such a bears thing to do.

If Nagy gets fired, I don't think there's a big search at all. I see a very short list of Chuckles, possibly Fangio (interviewed out of respect if/when he and Elway get canned) and a Rooney candidate.

Don't much care for ESPN opinions and haven't forever, especially think Rex Ryan is an ass clown. But Ryan Clark and Dan Orlovsky got it right.

I'm not exactly optimistic that this will happen. It would take a total team meltdown and a disintegration of the locker room for it to even be considered. My point was more that even when we try to hire an "expert" to help Georgie find the right GM, even that expert fucks everything up.

BWW is right. There's no hope until ownership changes, and that never will happen.

  7. EvertonBears M.V.P. Bears

Good rant varder. Few thoughts of my own.

    * Titans suck.

    * The performance of the O-Line doesnt bother me that much tbh. When you're as decimated as the Bears were there is no realistic hope for good production. I think they had two 7th rounders AND two UDFA's starting yesterday inc 2 players with a combined 0 career starts. All i would really say is that whatever happens Rashaad Coward can not be starting at RT next week. Coward was the worst player on the field yesterday, he's completely unfit to play in the more space orientated position of RT. Don't necessarily blame him, he's now started at 3 spots on the OL in the pros having never played OL in college, its ridiculous. Either way, im taking literally anyone over him at RT next week.

    * No the person to blame for the OL's titanic failing is the same old guy, the bum HC. When you have that group out there you have to do everything you can to make it easy on them. You get the ball out the QBs hand quickly and often. Yesterday should've been built around a quick rhythm offense and it was noticeable that the few times they looked ok on Offense in the 1st half they were playing that way. If the D starts clamping down on that then your in prime double move/PA territory. Doesnt have to be long developing 7step drops. The longest play of the game, to Miller the play after the aborted snap, was a clear example. SHotugn, empty set, 3 step drop and the ball was gone. That should've been happening all game and it wasnt.

The blocking scheme should've been simplified as much as possible with guys getting to the line and going. The exact opposite is what happened. The play calls on 3rd/4th & short were unspeakably dumb. Traps, counters, fake pitchouts, all they do is give your guys more time to get beat. I have no problem going for either 4th &1 because they were both actually half a yard. Half a yard should be an automatic QB sneak, it can't be stopped. The second 4th & 1 where there was a FS, i believe the Titans only had a 3 man front! Pick either G(id pick Ifedi) and then just double the nose and sneak the right A gap. Its not hard, its only made to look hard because the guy calling the plays is a clueless bellend.

    * Foles played way worse than his numbers. Too often the ball didnt come out on time, far too often he wasnt stepping in on the throw. Foles, to me, looks gunshy at this point. And its kinda understandable, but im afraid sometimes you've just got to commit to your throw and take the hit. Tannehill did that. And the resulting perfect throw and TD to Brown was, in terms of deciding the outcome, a backbreaking play.

At this point there's no real answer at QB. The GM has failed and the HC has failed, its a done deal. Personally i hate second guessing/flip flopping in life so for my two cents i dont need to see Trubisky again. There will come a time for Bray but when that move happens i dont wanna then flip flop back to Foles(or Mitch). So im waiting on Bray. Also, im 96.2% sure Bray will totally suck.

    * Jimmy Graham's blocking was once again pathetic yesterday. He's the softest 260lb player ive ever seen, but never mind that for a second.

I have Graham with 6 catches yesterday. I have def 4, maybe 5, with him either getting the ball static but in clear space, or on the run. Watching Jimmy Graham try to get up a head of steam actually makes my own joints hurt. He is painfully slow and totally incapable of slipping/breaking a tackle in the open field. So why is he getting these space/movement plays. More to the point, why isn't Kmet. You know, YOUR TOP PICK IN THE LAST DRAFT!!! The fastest, most athletic TE you have!

Kmet didnt see 1 single target yesterday, that is a straight up indictment of Nagy. At this point i can really only think Kmet looks terrible in practise, which would go totally against all the sunshine they blew up his ass in TC, but there ya go. And honestly, i dont give a shit even if he did look shit in practise, throw him the damn ball! He gets on the field. They just always have him blocking and never throw to him. Beyond dumb.

    * ARob made a slew of good catches and frankly deserves better than to be on this scrub ass Offense. But there's no deal happening here. He either plays next year on the tag or he convinces Pace he will never play another down if they tag him and Pace lets him walk. Or all of that minus the walking part and we go into Leveon Bell territory. Either way, nothing ive seen so far leads me to believe Pace does right by Robinson.

    * AJ Brown was the only opposition player who left a mark in this game. No one else was impressive to me. Overall this was not a performance id feel that great about if I was a Titans fan. Basically Titans suck.

    * The Defense collectively played another great game. Held their opponent to 17points, kept Henry under 70yards, Tannehill completion % under 50%, put 3 sacks on an O-Line that had only given up like 10 all season. Once again, you can reasonably ask for no more than that.

    * Its nice to see Trevathan showing up again at last. I thought he had a v good game, after a v solid game last week. Both MLBs have looked very good the last 2 weeks. Roquan, there's no other way to say, is in the best form of his Bears career. The new found edge & confidence has been noticeable since prob the Colts game. Wanna see it continue, but at this rate he's playing himself into that next deal.

    * Jaylon Johnson is 2nd in the entire league in passes defended. Had 2 more yesterday. Kid is just having a great rookie season. Have to note that after letting Prince go and whatever happened with Tolliver, this could've been an area of real weakness for the D this season if JJ had started slowly. Its been nothing of the sort.

    * A month ago the Vikings game looked like a gimme. Now i would put them as favs. The Bears have often played Dalvin Cook really well and it is still very much the case that the Vikes Offense will go as far as he takes them.

    * Robert Quinn is outstanding at setting up stunts for the guy inside him by hitting that LT/LG gap hard and occupying both. He and Nichols have a good rapport for this move. It was those 2 who combined with this successfully twice against the Panthers. Other than that, he's done virtually nothing. The speed rush around the edge in particular has been a non factor after his first play as a Bear. He was slipping a fair bit yesterday, but he's been on turf in Detroit, LA, Atlanta, where is the production?

    * Titans suck.

  8. vvarder Franchise Player Bears

You know, it's been this way all season. Early on we had those big comebacks against shitty teams, but the offense is John Fox esque, or even Trestman-esque. If we've seen enough of Mitch, I've seen enough of Nagy. We know what we have in him at this point, and it's really fucking clear he doesn't feel he needs to change. To be fair, he certainly tried to run plenty enough before the game got out of hand, but so little of what he's doing works.

Also, great points on the D, they overall really were not bad at all, 17 points given up on Defense. In addition to you mentioning Skrine, the only thing truly frustrating is the absolute lack of turnovers. The Titans D is not good at takeaways, and even they got TWO.

Yeah, the real measure of a coach / team is holding it together through the down times, and Nagy has done that thus far which means his job is probably safe. But at some point, you have to have results. Knowing the Bears, there is a zero percent chance any changes are made during the year, and rightly so. We are "still in the hunt". End of year, it will really depend on how pissed the fanbase is. I don't think anyone is buying the Covid excuse. I think more of us are the Dan Orlovsky take of "you have everything you wanted and it doesn't work".

Not only that though, that lack of discipline is *directly* taking points off the board.

  9. vvarder Franchise Player Bears

I laughed way too hard at this. To be fair to Chirpy, it was a real backhanded way of trying to fish for compliments for his team while trying to give us credit for not being "as bad as we say".

The problem is, we went over this *in detail* prior to the game. I gave the Bears more credit than the deserved pregame anyway, heh.

I've used this analogy before, but our loyalty is like that of a wife to her domestically abusive husband (Bears) who will never change his abusive ways. It's not something to be proud of, but also not something that can be helped.

Outside of Floyd, Pace has been pretty solid with his defensive drafting, in contrast to the other side of the ball. Goldman, EJax, Amos, JJ, Roquan, Kwit, all turned into solid starters. This is why I think he will outlast Nagy. He will point to his successes on defense and blame Nagy for failing to develop the guys he drafted.

I'd like to think I was realistic, but the Carolina and TB games gave me that false optimism that the rudder had turned a bit and we would be competitive this year. Instead we're on a line drive for 500 (possibly LESS), missing the playoffs AND having a shitty draft pick, while retaining both Pace and Nagy on some flimsy excuses of "they did as well as they could".
