    Ruth Bader Ginsburg died.

Now this election just got serious.

    Presidents come and presidents go.

But SCOUS lasts a long time.

Agreed. It was beyond shitty. I don't even have a word for it. I expected Trump to be a little on the obnoxious side. That's just how he does things. Then Biden started doing the same thing. And the whole thing fell apart. And the poor moderator Chris Wallace was desperately trying to hold the whole thing together. I almost wish he had stood up and said, "Guys. Play by the rules or get off the damn stage". That would have been great.

Not really looking forward to either guy winning. Though I don't think we see a winner declared tonight.

    I see a few scenarios...

Trump wins but Dems take control of the Senate. Pretty much nothing happens for the next 4 years outside of a lot of talk and arguing.

Biden wins and Dems take control of Senate. The right protests, a lot. But pretty much nothing happens outside of a lot of talk.

Trump wins and GOP maintains control of the Senate. Libs go crazy...but not much really happens the next 4 years outside of a lot of talk and arguing.

Or Trump wins, republicans control house, senate and Supreme Court overturns abortion
Riotors go crazy and the national guard gets some rubber bullet target practice.

The odds of this ever happening are so extremely low. Some states have already put hard laws on it...the chances of the SCOTUS overturning anything is miniscule. It's one of those subjects that is just overblown.

All year I thought it was option 1 where Trump wins but dems take sliver of senate lead and keep/slightly expand house was what was going to happen.

But...before today, the big election day--just under 100 million people have already voted. Remember, Hillary won the popular vote at 65.8 mil to 62 and change mil. I don't love Biden, but if you do--that's something to feel really good about. I think MSN said 12 states blew out 2016 early voting numbers already.

Senate republicans fucked themselves, plus there's a ton of them up for re-election as opposed to dems like a couple of years ago. I think they flip Doug Jones in Alabama but lose Maine (Collins), Arizona (McSally), Colorado (Gardner). 50/50 on Loeffler in GA, Tillis in NC, Graham in SC, and Ernst in Iowa. Dont know enough about anyone else. Shortly after taking the lead I expect dems to fuck it up just like they did with a bad ACA bill nobody read but voted on.

I wish Biden had the balls to expand court and force dems to impose term limits/strip benefits on every last cocksucker in the House and Senate. But he wont, it'll be just a righty tighty scare tactic for now.

LOL SC wont overturn abortion. I'd like to see them try because maybe some of these shitbag politicians will start dying by hand of the pissed off populace...

They want us scared and focusing on that/the ACA while they enable corporations and give them more power than they already have behind closed doors/off camera. That's literally what they've been doing for the past decade-plus. Its why Fossil Fuel companies, Monsanto, Verizon, AT&T, Comcast, and Defense contractors (NOT the military) keep gaining power in the lobbying game/turn it all into a monopoly.

You have a knack for saying what I’m thinking but saying it way more intelligently than I ever could.

Expanding the Supreme Court would be the dumbest political move in our nation's history. Because it means once a far right republican gets into office, after Biden, they'd expand the court with a bunch of alt-right Nazi judges to give conservatives a majority again. Then the next Dem would do the opposite but with a bunch of SJW morons, growing the court until its very existence becomes utterly meaningless as a branch of govt, simply as a weapon for the party with executive branch power to essentially rule by decree. Third world here we come.

Unrelated, but can someone here (preferably a conservative) make an intelligent case for why the electoral college is needed in our presidential elections? Biden is going to win the popular vote in a landslide but that means nothing. How is this a good thing?

    I'm not a conservative but...it's not.

I don't think anyone actually believes expanding the supreme court is the answer - that's why Biden and co are so reticent to do it / talk about doing it.

But the current court isn't a better alternative. It was supposed to be an institution that wasn't politicized - not effected or decided by partisan politics. That line has clearly been crossed, and the R Senate's malicious manipulation of it shows that something has to be fixed, and the institution as it stands is a joke.

So expanding the court may be the last step to force real, bipartisan reform. Because no one wants that, and it's easy to see how that'd go wrong. But as of now, one party clearly likes the rules as-is. So by creating an answer that no one likes, it may force an actual re-work of the supreme court.

But... that's some pie in the sky stuff. We've seen that extreme partisanship has paralyzed and killed our country, so to count on less of that is probably too optimistic.

OK. I'll give it a shot. You and I don't elect presidents. The states do. We just tell our state who to pick. The EC was implemented to more or less level the field by keeping the major population centers from over running the more rural areas. (today we call them the flyover states) At least that's how I understand it.

RBG could have retired several years ago, her legacy as a trailblazing woman secure, when Obama was in office. She gambled that Hilary would win in 2016 and it didn't work. It sucks that republicans have zero principles on this, but constitutionally they've done nothing wrong.

The problem isn't the court, or how we put people there, it's the electoral college. The majority of people didn't vote for Trump and yet we got stuck with 3 of his judges. That's not the will of the people.

But isn't that what the Senate is for? To provide each state with equal representation regardless of population.

And even if we have the EC, why do ALL votes for a state have to go one way or another? How about we do it proportionally? So even California goes 70% Biden, Trump gets 30% of the electoral votes for that state. That seems more fair.
