I doubt that, to be honest. Stefanski likes him, he draws defensive coverage, obviously, and he is always a threat whether he is reeling it in or just his presence on the field. I think they will miss him a bit.
Tell that to Browns fans. Receivers like OJB make your QB stupid about forcing the ball to them too much.
I think this is the key. OBJ may make our team better on paper but not in result Hollywood Higgins and Baker's connection is good enough for me not to miss OBJ and his crybaby status. OBJ can whine about being on a 4-2 team somewhere else. I'm tired of defending him and ready to move on
Add me to the list of fans that will hold the door open for him to take his bullshit elsewhere. Other than a few (very few) highlight reel clips, what has he ever done to make his team better? The dude even got banned for two years by his Alma Mater for handing out cash to LSU players on the field right after they just won the NCAA championship game.
I agree with you guys... OBJ IS an asshole. I was wrong probably in defending him, but I was referring to him as a player on the field and involved in the offensive scheme of things. Personally, I think he should take a flying leap.
If all you're looking for schematicly, is someone with decent hands and the speed to take the top off of the defense, those guys are out there. John Ross from Cincinnati may soon become available.
The bad news is that this injury probably negated any potential residual trade value OBJ may have had. Looks like we're stuck with his diva ass for the near future.
I disagree with this to an extent. His trade value was already way down from the original asking price. I’d try to move him this week to a struggling team that likely is drafting high for a third and a bit player on defense that could have a larger role in CLE. “Hello? Yes, I have Adam Gase holding on line 1...” And part of that comes from my thoughts immediately after the draft about the selection of Peoples-Jones cracking the door a little farther open on an Odell trade.
Y'all... I don't remember all this OBJ hate when he put the team on his back and single-handedly won the Dallas game for us. I'll say it again, louder for the folks in back this time... the problem is what OBJ on the field does to Mayfield's psyche. Beckham is a guy who's commanding the best coverage guy a defense has to offer every. single. play. That is rare in the NFL to get a weapon like that for your offense. This further impacts the question: what the hell is Mayfield doing when Beckham's on the field. If coverages are rolling or you have your best guy on the field, you have major advantages elsewhere in the lineup. Baker was dropping dimes on the defense all day after Beckham's injury. He's got chemistry with Higgins since 2018 (when he looked like an All Pro as a rookie throwing to Higgins, Damion Ratley, and Breshaud Perriman). Maybe Odell's absence from the lineup is exactly what Baker needs to get back to the franchise QB we saw in 2018. I don't wish injury to Odell, and I'm certainty not going to firesale him now. I'm hoping that Stefanski takes his opportunity to unleash Mayfield and when Odell gets back, he's a top-tier weapon and not the obstacle to Mayfield's stellar play.
"Single handedly"? I submit that long end around TD was more play than player. Substitute Jarvis, Rashad or Donovan and the result very well could have been the same as OBJ's "hands" had nothing to do with it. Point well taken. This is where I think the plus side resides. I have a strong suspicion that Beckham was far enough in Mayfield's ear that Baker's 1st read was always in OBJ's direction. Without that - perhaps Mayfield can legitimately progress as the QB he needs to become.
At the end of the day, the QB makes the receiver in 90% of the cases. I do agree with many on here that Baker's psyche was more than likely off, based on the fact that Baker is also a fan at heart and OBJ was probably like a celebrity to him when he arrived in Cleveland. When HE talks in Baker's ear, he is probably going to listen. If for nothing else, so he doesn't get called out personally in the media for not getting him the ball more. I don't think he has to worry about that issue with any other receiver on the team. Now they just have to step up. Very curious Tim, did you have Peoples-Jones rated highly...like much higher than a 6th rounder? To date, he hasn't done ANYTHING but make one of the most exciting catches I have seen in recent history. That catch was incredible, awesome, amazing, it will be replayed by me repeatedly. He will most likely be immortalized in the near future (even if it is short lived)... However, OBJ went down in the first quarter. Was DPJ not able to get open before that last pass of the day, or was it scheme related? I need someone that can do it week in and week out, not have a career based on one incredible circus catch to win a single game. I hope he is more than that.
3rd round grade with almost identical vertical markers (potential ascension numbers) to Chase Claypoole, and I think you may have been able to swap those two and the results from both would be similar. Opportunity combined with the ability to develop in Pittsburgh compared with extremely limited opportunities and a yet to be established track record in Cleveland would be the immediate difference in their projected growth arc. If I’m in the front office for the Browns, I don’t need People’s-Jones to be Beckham. I need him to be the best version of himself I believe he can be and continue to build my offense with the players that I consider long term solutions.
And so you know my DPJ faith is sincere @IrishDawg42 , he’s still on my practice squad from the beginning of the year in the NADL dynasty league.
Now of course I don't wish harm on anyone but I do feel much better about having a really good gauge of "Is Baker our guy?" these next 9 games with his two best receivers now being the two he's shown to be the most productive and in sync with. I would not be surprised if this offense still puts up 40 points consistently as long as Teller, Tretter and Chubb come back. Because we all know we need 40 to win a game
Urban Meyer on record - Donovan Peoples-Jones was the best HS wide receiver he ever tried to recruit, and that he should have been drafted (NFL) in the first round... nuff said... unfortunately dude from Detroit, what can ya do? lol! I won't hold it against him. He shoulda worn the scarlet and gray, but that's okay, Browns love him anyway! He's been great as KR and WR. Hard worker. Amazing athlete. Pretty freakin good 6th rounder.
