49ers climb back to .500 with 24-16 upset of Rams

The Rams have four victories. All four came against the NFC East.

Unfortunately for the Rams, they don’t play in the NFC East.

The Rams fell to 0-2 against teams outside the NFC East, losing 24-16 to the 49ers. San Francisco improved to 3-3 in the first of a brutal seven-game stretch.

The 49ers jumped out to a 21-6 halftime lead and held on without running back Raheem Mostert, who left with an ankle injury after one carry in the second half.

After the two-minute warning, Deebo Samuel took a flip pass from Jimmy Garoppolo that was more a rush than a catch and picked up 11 yards on third-and-seven to ensure the Rams wouldn’t see the ball again.

Garoppolo, who rebounded from last week when he lasted only 31 plays because of his ankle injury, went 23-of-33 for 268 yards and three touchdowns. George Kittle had seven catches for 109 yards and a touchdown, and Samuel made six receptions for 66 yards and a score.

The biggest plays of the game came late in the third quarter after the Rams reached the San Francisco 2. On third down, Cooper Kupp dropped what should have been a touchdown pass from Jared Goff.

The Rams elected to go for it on fourth down, and Goff’s pass, intended for Josh Reynolds, was picked by Jason Verrett. It was Verrett’s first interception since Sept. 11, 2016, against Alex Smith and the Chiefs.

Goff finished 19-of-38 for 198 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

After making four sacks last season, Aaron Donald had only two tackles and a quarterback hit.

Reports: Devin Bush tore his ACL

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said after Sunday’s win over the Browns that linebacker Devin Bush suffered a significant knee injury without mentioning a specific diagnosis.

According to multiple reports, it is a torn ACL for Bush. That brings the season to an end for the 2019 first-round pick.

The significant injury is a significant loss for the Steelers Defense. Bush had played every defensive snap this season before being injured and called the plays on defense for Pittsburgh.

Bush had five tackles and a half-sack before leaving Sunday’s game. He had 21 tackles and a half-sack in the team’s first four games of the year.

Robert Spillane took over for Bush on Sunday and will likely be playing an important role on the Pittsburgh defense in the weeks to come.

Ten NFL teams have one win or fewer

The NFL, as it should, likes to point out positive aspects of a season in progress, especially when it comes to the scoring of points and other things that make the game exciting. Here’s something the NFL won’t be issuing a press release about.

Nearly a third of the league stinks.

More specifically, 10 of 32 franchises currently have one win or fewer.

“Fewer” are the Jets, the lone remaining winless team, at 0-6. The league also has six teams with 1-5 records: Texans, Jaguars, Giants, Washington, Vikings, and Falcons. The Chargers are 1-4, and the Eagles and Bengals are 1-4-1 each.

That’s a combined record, for those 10 teams, of 9-48-2.

Already, two of those 10 teams have changed coaches. It’s hard not to wonder whether other teams will do the same, if for no reason others than to get a head start on the coming coaching carousel.

It doesn’t mean all of those teams are done. Indeed, with so many teams struggling, the odds are that one of them will find a way out of the weeds. Still, it’s glaring to have so many teams stuck in such a deep hole. For those that keeping fading, there definitely will be a concern that the players, coaches, and other personnel may become too complacent about complying with COVID-19 protocols, sparking potential outbreaks.

    Chiefs run over the Bills

The Chiefs dominated the Bills tonight, but not the way they usually do it.

Instead of Patrick Mahomes beating the Bills with his arm, it was the Chiefs’ ground game that led Kansas City to a 26-17 victory.

Rookie running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire led the way with 161 yards, and the Chiefs also got strong running by Darrel Williams and Darwin Thompson, as well as some big runs by Mahomes.

The Chiefs finished the game with 245 rushing yards and 225 passing yards. It was the first time since Mahomes became the starting quarterback that the Chiefs finished a game with more rushing yards than passing yards.

The Bills struggled mightily on offense. Although Josh Allen threw two touchdown passes, he was erratic and struggled to find anyone open downfield, and he threw a game-sealing interception in the final minutes. Allen was also the Bills’ leading rusher, but that was with just 42 yards as running backs Devin Singletary and Zack Moss were held in check by the Chiefs’ defense.

The win improves the Chiefs to 5-1 and is a major statement that they’ve rebounded from their loss to the Raiders and are favorites in the AFC. The Bills fall to 4-2 with consecutive losses to fellow AFC playoff hopefuls, and those two losses are tough to swallow for a team that fancied itself among the best in the conference, but isn’t quite there yet.

Kyler Murray, Kliff Kingsbury return home and get blowout of Cowboys

Kliff Kingsbury and Kyler Murray had happy homecomings, beating up on a homecoming opponent.

The Cardinals came to AT&T Stadium and acted as if they owned the place, whipping the home team from start to finish. Arizona beat (and beat up) the Cowboys 38-10. They climbed back above .500 at 4-2, good for a second-place tie with the Rams behind the Seahawks.

Murray, who grew up a hop, skip and jump from AT&T Stadium in Allen, threw two touchdowns and ran for another. Kingsbury, who played and coached at Texas Tech, called the plays for an offense that rolled to 438 yards.

DeAndre Hopkins and Christian Kirk also have Texas ties, with Hopkins having played seven seasons in Houston and Kirk having played collegiately at Texas A&M. Kirk caught two passes for 86 yards and two touchdowns, one covering 80 yards, and Hopkins had two catches for 73 yards, including a 60-yarder.

The Cowboys don’t have Jason Garrett to blame anymore. So what now?

They remain in first place despite the 2-4 record, with their only wins are over the Falcons and Giants, who are a combined 2-10.

For the first time in 70 games, the Cowboys played a game without Dak Prescott. It was not pretty.

It didn’t help that right guard Zack Martin departed in the first half with a concussion, leaving left guard Connor Williams as the only starter in the line.

Andy Dalton took three sacks and eight quarterback hits. He threw two interceptions, and Ezekiel Elliott lost two fumbles. The Cardinals converted the turnovers into three touchdowns and a field goal.

Dalton finished 34 of 54 for 266 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.

Cardinals safety Budda Baker had seven tackles, a sack, an interception, a forced fumble and a pass breakup, and linebacker Haason Reddick had two sacks.

I have a bold prediction. LeVeon Bell is going to be the reason why the Chiefs fail to repeat this season.
