    Reichel over Stutzle Dan?

Who are you hoping falls to the Sabres at 8?

My source was the 9th OA pick and has been in Germany for pushing 40 years as a player & coach in the DEL (and he’s been a scout). His credentials are impressive, and he told me that Reichel is the best prospect in Germany.

In no way do I expect him to be drafted ahead of Stuetzle. But, he may have a better career (who really knows with any of these players?). I would not be surprised to see some team “reach” for him before his projected #20 +/- spot.

There are two prospects that realistically could fall to #8 that I would be very happy to see in blue & gold: Marco Rossi (people call him small; I refer to him as short but he plays like a big man). He could help his team this season and projects as a 2C. That’s valuable. If he were 2 or 3 inches taller I don’t think he’d make it past 3, and he still may go top 5.

The other prospect I like at 8 is Lucas Raymond. Also a future 2C and an all around very good player. If either Rossi or Raymond are on the board I don’t want Kevyn Adams to give a second thought to deviate.

I think that both Drysdale and Sanderson belong in the top ten and that Askarov could also fetch a single digit selection. That all works very well for Buffalo since that could drive a team to pay up for the Sabres spot.

Therefore, my dream scenario - short of Ros or Ray - would be to trade down. NJ has no. 18 & 20, and while the traditional draft value suggests that’s too much for #8, more recent draft work suggests it’s very good value for NJ. So Buffalo drops down and picks both Connor Zary and Lukas Reichel. That would set up the organization nicely for depth at all positions.

Connor Zary is my favorite prospect in the draft. Do not confuse “favorite” with “best”. He is tough, smart (very smart!), and he plays with sandpaper that will abuse his opponent and amuse his fans.

Give me a tough and gritty player with the smarts to be coached up. In fact, I may adopt whatever team that snags him. His skating is not elite (to say the least), but if it was he’d belong in the top 5 convo. I think his ceiling is 2C but he has a high floor too; 3C. He’s great value in the teens and could well be a steal at that.

Thats real nice if Boston or Vancouver could pull this off, but neither team has any 1st round picks and I read that would be the ultimate need for a trade to happen with the Coyotes.

OEL would be a welcome addition but that contract, both AAV and term, are too much. Arizona would have eat some of the money.
A lot has been made about his numbers declining in recent years but the timing coincides with the team going from a defensive system to a more offensive one when they hired Tocchet. Who knows, he’s still only 29 and essentially never misses any time.

A couple kids I’m real interested in for the upcoming draft are Ian Moore-D and Sean Farrell-F. Both played for my buddy Carl in high school, both learning to play the right way from Carl as well. He’s an amazing coach, motivator and hockey mind. He coached Henry Thrun also, already looks like an absolute steal for Anaheim grabbing him last year in the 4th round. Kid was DOMINATE as a freshman D for Harvard last season.
Moore is a tall lanky kid that looks like he could certainly use a few more lbs and you know they will inevitably come. Farrell a smaller skilled centerman. Both should go anywhere between the 2nd-4th round.

    Great post Dan.
Don’t know much about Reichel but will keep an eye out for him knowing that.

Im a big Rossi guy too. Read an in depth evaluation on him a year or two ago and been following him since. Seems like he has the right mind set and background to help him to continue to grow and improve. If I were Will I wouldn’t be mad if the Wings nab him too.

Laine could be traded by Jets, GM says
Forward scored 63 points in 68 games this season, was No. 2 pick in 2016 Draft

Patrik Laine could be traded by the Winnipeg Jets as they attempt to reshape their roster for the future, general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff said Friday.

"So we're looking at all our options, including potentially trading different players," Cheveldayoff told NHL.com when asked about recent reports that the forward could be traded.

Laine, selected by the Jets with the No. 2 pick in the 2016 NHL Draft, has one season left on a two-year, $13.5 million contract ($6.75 million average annual value) he agreed to Sept. 27, 2019.

The 22-year-old scored 63 points (28 goals, 35 assists) in 68 games this season. He sustained a hand injury in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Qualifiers against the Calgary Flames and didn't play again in the postseason. The Jets lost the best-of-5 series in four games after finishing ninth in the Western Conference (37-28-6, .563 points percentage).

Laine said before the season that he wanted to play more with the top line and was looking for more on-ice responsibility. He did see some time with first-line center Mark Scheifele but played with center Cody Eakin and left wing Nikolaj Ehlers late in the regular season and during the postseason.

Laine increased his point production -- he had 13 fewer points (50; 30 goals, 20 assists) in 14 more games last season -- and his average ice time was up by more than two minutes per game, from 17:14 to 19:25, the highest of his four NHL seasons.

Just read the Broonz in a Laine rumor. I don’t buy it, but I like it. Winnipeg needs D and doesn’t want to commit to Laine. Many teams in position to take a big swing at Laine and I’d applaud anyone that does. Looking directly at you Buffalo, perfect trade partner too.

Well, Buffalo is not going to trade Dahlin and any other d-man is not going to be enough to land Laine. It makes me think the cost might be too much. He's also going to be due for a mega-contract soon. Lastly, he may not be a great lockerroom guy. (We don't have any facts on this, but it is openly discussed.) Winterpeg will rush a guy outta town if he gets on the fans' wrong side.

In the end, I only think Laine makes sense for the Sabres if the Jets accept below market value. And, I don't think that's gonna happen. In fact, I expect that he'll remain a Jet.

Risto + Buffalo '21- 1st rounder for Laine.
    yay or nay?

Switch Montour for Risto, and protect the '21 first (at a minimum, give Buffalo top-3 draft protection.

I'd rather keep Risto and I think there are some teams that would value Montour more highly (although I do not think the Jets are one of them). Risto is EXACTLY the type of player a SC team needs to have to push deep to the Cup.

Domi and a third to Columbus.

    Anderson to Montreal.

I think this is a win for the Habs.

I'm just waiting for the Leafs to do noting and then think just adding Gudas will suddenly fix the team's problems on defense.

My original reaction was thinking that Montreal got fleeced on this but I guess Domi's value has really taken a beating. Anderson's injury concerns are real.
I was really hoping he'd be a Bruin.
Good new opportunity for both Anderson and Domi.

Big gamble by Montreal. Anderson with just 4 points in the 26 games he was on the ice... not good.
