Wings send Green to Oilers for Brodziak, conditional draft pick Both Green and Athanasiou held out of Sunday night's game against Flames DETROIT -- Veteran defenseman Mike Green was just minutes away from taking the ice with his Red Wings teammates for warmups when he found out that he would not be playing. The Wings held Green and forward Andreas Athanasiou out of the lineup for Sunday night's game against the Calgary Flames for "asset management" reasons. Shortly after midnight, the Wings announced that they had traded Green to the Edmonton Oilers for center Kyle Brodziak and a conditional draft pick. ___________ _______________________ Too bad another deadline has approached and the Wings are once again, sellers.

Robby Fabbri signed a two-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings on Monday. Financial terms were not disclosed. The 24-year-old forward could have become a restricted free agent after this season. The Red Wings acquired Fabbri in a trade with the St. Louis Blues on Nov. 6, and he scored 31 points (14 goals, 17 assists) in 52 games for Detroit after scoring one goal in nine games for St. Louis. Two days after the trade, Fabbri scored twice in his first game with the Red Wings, a 4-2 win against the Boston Bruins, becoming the seventh player to score two goals in his Detroit debut. "From Day One walking into that dressing room [with the Red Wings], the guys were so welcoming and it was easy for me to get comfortable," Fabbri said. "I've been waiting for that opportunity ... to prove that I'm still a good player in this league. And I knew with that opportunity I was going to give it everything that I had and not let it go to waste. I couldn't be happier that it's here in Detroit." Fabbri, selected by the Blues in the first round (No. 21) of the 2014 NHL Draft, has 104 points (46 goals, 58 assists) in 216 NHL games with the Blues and Red Wings. His best offensive season came as a rookie in 2015-16, when he scored 37 points (18 goals, 19 assists) in 72 games for the Blues, then tied for the St. Louis scoring lead in the Stanley Cup Playoffs with 15 points (four goals, 11 assists) in 20 games. Knee injuries limited Fabbri to 83 games during the next three seasons and cost him all of 2017-18. He won the Stanley Cup with the Blues in 2019, finishing with six points (two goals, four assists) in 32 regular-season games and scoring one goal in 10 playoff games. "I'm confident in myself," Fabbri said. "I can only see myself improving and getting better here with this team as we come together as a group and do some good things in the future." NHL.com
Howard 'probably' won't play for Red Wings next season: report 36-year-old goalie can become unrestricted free agent Oct. 9, was 2-23-2 this season Jimmy Howard has no plans of retiring from the NHL but will "probably not" continue his career with the Detroit Red Wings, the 36-year-old goalie told Sportsnet on Sunday. "Someone is going to have to tell me I can't play anymore," Howard said. Howard was 2-23-2 with an NHL career-worst 4.20 goals-against average and .882 save percentage in 27 starts this season. The two wins are tied for the second fewest in a season among goalies who played at least 25 games in NHL history (Michel Belhumeur was 0-24-3 with the Washington Capitals in 1974-75). Howard, who can become an unrestricted free agent on Oct. 9, said he's been training for two months and discussed with his family the possibility of moving if playing somewhere close to home wasn't an option. "I want to keep playing," Howard told The Detroit News on June 5. "This year left such a bitter taste in my mouth. I want to go out there and show people I can still play in this league. I know I'm capable. "Honestly, there's so much up in the air. But at the same time, I've been around this game long enough to realize there comes a time when you have to separate ties. If that's the way it'll have to go, I've mentally prepared for that. My wife and I have talked about it a little bit, and if that's going to be the case, it'll have to be the case." Howard did not win a game after Oct. 29, going 0-18-2 in his final 20 starts before the season was paused on March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus. It is the second longest streak without a win since the shootout was implemented in 2005-06; Cory Schneider was winless in 22 straight starts (0-17-4) for the New Jersey Devils from Dec. 29, 2017 to Feb. 14, 2019. The Red Wings had the worst record (17-49-5) and points percentage (.275) in the NHL, missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the fourth straight season after qualifying the previous 25. "I personally don't believe I represent those [statistics], but I was a big part of the program," Howard said. Selected by Detroit in the second round (No. 64) of the 2003 NHL Draft, Howard is 246-196-70 with a 2.62 GAA, .912 save percentage and 24 shutouts in 543 regular-season games (523 starts), and 21-26 with a 2.58 GAA, .918 save percentage and three shutouts in 48 playoff games (47 starts). He is third in Red Wings history in wins and fourth in save percentage. "I don't think this extra time off is necessarily a bad thing for me," Howard said. "I can recharge and refocus and go into next year with the confidence of being able to play. … If I could continue to play for another year or two, I'd be very content to walk away." NHL.com
That’s using cap space well. Buy a second round pick and pick up valuable veteran leadership with one sweet move. Good job, SY. Of course, Buffalo acquired the better Staal. Eric has everything the Sabres need for a year, and saved cap room to boot.
I always wonder what 'future considerations' means... Oh well, it was a smart move as defense is needed. Yzerman says he likes what he see's in the org and cant wait to get the season started... here's hoping for the best possible results.
Future Considerations: this means the trade happened in the past, and we thought about it today (we considered the trade in the future). In terms of assets going to the Rangers ... well they get to deliberate over this trade once FA begins. It’s a good trade for the NYR. It’s a GREAT trade for the Wings.
Not sure if Staal is in SY’s plans. Although that seems more likely after today’s word that Daley won’t be retained.
Gotta think Staal is being bought out and the Dead Things just bought a 2nd round pick. Well done, this deal truly helps both teams. Thinking Staal will then sign a short money deal with a contender.
Red Wings to pursue goalie in free agency, won't offer Howard contract GM expects to be 'relatively conservative' when exploring market The Detroit Red Wings will look for a goalie in free agency after informing longtime starter Jimmy Howard they will not offer him a contract before the market opens Oct. 9, general manager Steve Yzerman said. "There are several [goalies] that today look like they'll be on the market next week, and we'll look to fill the position with that," Yzerman said Thursday. The list of goalies who can become unrestricted free agents includes Craig Anderson, Corey Crawford, Aaron Dell, Brian Elliott, Thomas Greiss, Braden Holtby, Anton Khudobin, Robin Lehner, Jacob Markstrom, Ryan Miller, Mike Smith and Cam Talbot. Henrik Lundqvist was added to that group when the New York Rangers bought out the final season of his contract Wednesday. "Without [an interview period] to talk to free agents, we have to wait until Oct. 9 to really get a good feel for where there's a fit for interest of these players and the parameters of contracts," Yzerman said. "So we'll get a better idea next week." The Red Wings generally are looking for shorter-term contracts in free agency because of their rebuild and the League's financial outlook. "I would say we'll be relatively conservative," Yzerman said. "There's a lot of uncertainty as to what the economic landscape in the NHL looks like in the next couple of years. "I wouldn't rule out anything. Again, it's got to make sense. The contract has to make sense ... the [average annual value], or what you have to pay the player, and the term depending on their age. We're not opposed to anything, but it's got to make sense." The Red Wings also are looking to use their space under the NHL salary cap to acquire future assets from teams looking for relief, like they did when they acquired defenseman Marc Staal and a second-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft in a trade with the Rangers for future considerations Saturday. Namestnikov agrees to two-year contract with Red Wings Vladislav Namestnikov agreed to a two-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday. Financial terms were not released. The 27-year-old forward scored 31 points (17 goals, 14 assists) in 65 games with the Colorado Avalanche and Ottawa Senators last season, including six points (four goals, two assists) in nine regular-season games after he was traded to Colorado on Feb. 24. He scored five points (four goals, one assist) in 12 postseason games . Selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round (No. 27) of the 2011 NHL Draft, Namestnikov has scored 189 points (83 goals, 106 assists) in 425 regular-season games with the Avalanche, Senators, New York Rangers and Lightning. He has scored nine points (five goals, four assists) in 41 Stanley Cup Playoff games. Namestnikov is the nephew of former Red Wings forward Vyacheslav Kozlov, and Detroit general manager Steve Yzerman was Tampa Bay GM when the Lightning drafted him. "It's awesome," Namestnikov said. "I mean, I grew up in Michigan. I was always around the team when my uncle played. So I'm familiar with the area. I skate every summer with the guys, so I'm familiar with all the players here, and I'm excited to join the team. "I've known [Yzerman] for a long time. He drafted me in Tampa, and definitely it helps when you're familiar with the GM. That definitely came into play when I made my decision, and I'm happy with worked out here and I got to sign with Detroit." The Red Wings were 17-49-5 last season and have not made the playoffs since 2016. "I understand the situation, but I want to be a part of the rebuild," Namestnikov said. "I want to be a part of the Red Wings going forward. So I'm going to come in and have a good [offseason] here, try to come in, help the team as much as possible and go from there. "It still doesn't feel real, but it in a way, it does feel like coming home. I mean, this is my summer home for many years, and I grew up here. So it definitely feels like it's like a coming home. As I said before, I'm beyond excited, and hopefully we can get it started here soon." NHL.com __________ ____________________ I aprove of this... good signing.
