The 49ers began preparing for the worst by signing Ziggy Ansah. They were hoping for the best.

Unfortunately for the 49ers and Nick Bosa, the MRI confirmed the defensive end tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during Sunday’s game. The team announced the bad news Monday evening.

Bosa, 22, will undergo season-ending surgery.

Derek Carr tosses three touchdowns as Raiders win Las Vegas debut 34-24 over Saints

The Raiders are undefeated in Las Vegas.

After falling in a 10-0 hole in the first quarter, Derek Carr led the Las Vegas Raiders to a 34-24 victory over the New Orleans Saints in the first game at Allegiant Stadium.

The Raiders had just 34 yards of total offense at the end of the first quarter as Drew Brees and the Saints built an early lead. Will Lutz converted a 31-yard field goal and Alvin Kamara scored on a 1-yard touchdown in giving New Orleans the 10-point advantage.

But from that point forward it seemed as though it was the Raiders carrying the pedigree of a prodigious offensive attack. Las Vegas scored on six of their final seven offensive possessions with a lost fumble by Jalen Richard serving as the only blemish on the record. The Raiders outscored New Orleans by a 31-7 margin over the next two-and-a-half quarters.

Carr tossed a 3-yard touchdown to Alec Ingold, 15-yard touchdown to Zay Jones and 1-yard touchdown pass to Darren Waller as the Raiders grabbed a 24-17 lead midway through the third quarter. Jared Cook‘s 6-yard touchdown reception from Brees as the only offset to the Raiders scoring barrage. Richard responded from his fumble with a 20-yard touchdown run to push the Las Vegas lead to 31-17 with 7:43 remaining.

Carr completed 28 of 38 passes for 282 yards and three touchdowns on the night for the Raiders. Waller caught 12 passes for 103 yards and a touchdown and Josh Jacobs added 88 yards on 27 carries.

Brees and the Saints would quickly march for a touchdown to cut into the lead. Kamara’s 3-yard touchdown run with 4:33 left to play trimmed the lead to 31-24. However, a pass interference call against Janoris Jenkins moved the Raiders into New Orleans territory on the ensuing Las Vegas possession. Daniel Carlson drilled a 54-yard field goal with 1:05 left to play to give Las Vegas a 34-24 advantage and seal the inaugural victory for the team in Nevada.

The Jenkins pass interference call was one of 10 penalties for 129 yards on the night for New Orleans.

Brees had a fairly benign showing for the Saints. Despite throwing for 312 yards on 26-of-38 passing, the absence of Michael Thomas was clearly a massive obstacle for the New Orleans offense. Brees was also intercepted once by Nicholas Morrow.

Kamara led the team in receiving out of the backfield with nine catches for 95 yards. Tre'Quan Smith added 86 yards on five catches.

The NFL has issued fines amounting to over $1 million to teams and head coaches for breaking with the league’s coronavirus protocols last week after three coaches were spotted without masks on the sidelines, according to reports.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted late Monday that Denver’s Vic Fangio, Seattle’s Pete Carroll and San Francisco’s Kyle Shanahan were all hit with $100,000 fines. Schefter cited unnamed sources who said their teams were also hit with $250,000 fines. In all, the league issued $1.05 million in fines, he tweeted.

I wonder how the owners will react to this? If their losing revenue they certainly don’t want to be paying unnecessary fines.

The 49ers might have finally gotten some good news involving an MRI machine.

Raheem Mostert's latest tests revealed an MCL sprain, leaving the team optimistic its lead back won't be out for an extended period, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported. Niners coach Kyle Shanahan previously noted Mostert isn't expected to play Week 3 against the Giants.

A return soon thereafter would be a boon as several offensive starters nurse injuries (e.g. Jimmy Garoppolo, Deebo Samuel, George Kittle). Running back Tevin Coleman also has a knee sprain that Shanahan has expressed greater concern over. But it's Mostert who looms largest among San Francisco's backfield committee.

Despite missing the entire second half of Sunday's Week 2 win against the Jets, the former undrafted free agent leads the 49ers in rushing and receiving and is averaging 6.4 yards per carry. Mostert is also perhaps the fastest player in football, as his recent pair of 76-plus-yard touchdowns demonstrate.

The 49ers will just as gladly take a speedy recovery.

Dak Prescott is the NFC offensive player of the week

The Cowboys pulled off an improbable win against the Falcons last Sunday after recovering an onside kick, but they wouldn’t have had a shot at pulling the rabbit out of the hat without quarterback Dak Prescott.

Prescott kept the Falcons from putting the game away by completing 34-of-47 passes for 450 yards and a touchdown and running for three scores. The touchdown pass and final rushing touchdown came after the Cowboys fell behind by 15 points in the fourth quarter and set the stage for the fateful onside kick.

The NFL announced that Prescott has been named the NFC’s offensive player of the week as a result of his efforts. Prescott took the honors twice last season.

Prescott and the Cowboys will be in Seattle this weekend, which means he’ll be on the opposite sideline from Russell Wilson in a marquee matchup of two of the league’s best quarterbacks.

Falcons WR Julio Jones further strained hamstring in Week 2 loss

After exploding through the 150-yard mark in Week 1, Julio Jones played through a hamstring issue and wasn't much of a factor for Atlanta in Week 2.

Things might be getting worse for the receiver. Falcons coach Dan Quinn told reporters Wednesday Jones further strained his hamstring during the loss to Dallas, and the team will take his injury "through the week," per the Atlanta Journal Constitution's Jason Butt.

Jones was limited in practice ahead of Atlanta's meeting with Dallas, but still managed to play, catching just two passes for 24 yards. His status has yet to be made public ahead of Atlanta's Week 3 game against the 2-0 Chicago Bears, with an update expected upon the release of the team's first injury report Wednesday.

"It's football, right?" Jones said after the Week 2 defeat. "Everybody has nagging injuries here and there. It's nothing I can't handle."

Hamstring injuries tend to be trickier situations, especially for players who thrive on speed, explosion and premier footwork. Jones is that type of player, and when combined with his elite catching skills, makes for a tough cover for any defensive back in the NFL.

A hampered Jones is less than that, as evidenced by his stat line Sunday. Stay tuned on his status in the days and weeks ahead.

Randy Moss says he almost joined the Seahawks for their Super Bowl run

The Seahawks’ Super Bowl-winning 2013 team could have had another Hall of Famer on the roster: Randy Moss.

That’s what Moss said on a podcast appearance with Russell Wilson, in which he claimed Seahawks General Manager John Schneider called him during the 2013 season, after receiver Percy Harvin got hurt, and offered him a roster spot.

“The year you guys went to New York and beat Denver,” Moss said, “I had an opportunity, Russ, to come and play with you guys.”

Moss, who had played for the 49ers the year before, said he turned Schneider down because he was no longer in game shape.

“I know I’m not physically ready,” Moss said. “I did not want to let you guys down. . . . I knew, inside, from a physical standpoint, I wasn’t ready.”

Wilson said he would have loved the opportunity to play with Moss.

“My heart hurts,” Wilson said. “I wish somebody would have told me. We would’ve made this happen. . . . Now I’m going to have dreams of playing with Randy Moss.”

NFL season off to highest-scoring start ever

More points and more touchdowns have been scored in the first two weeks of this season than in any opening two weeks in NFL history.

So far this season, NFL teams have scored a combined 1,611 points. That breaks the previous record of 1,556 points scored in the first two weeks of the 2012 NFL season. Over 32 games, that works out to 1.7 points per game higher than the previous record.

NFL teams have also scored a combined 186 touchdowns this season. That breaks the previous record of 174 touchdowns scored in the first two weeks of the 2018 season.

It appears that after this most unusual of offseasons, with no preseason and limited time at team facilities because of the COVID-19 pandemic, NFL offenses are ahead of defenses. It also helps that NFL officials have been calling fewer penalties, particularly offensive holding penalties.

Fans tend to prefer higher-scoring games, so there will be few complaints if scoring records continue to fall.
