Browns sign linebacker Malcolm Smith, former Super Bowl MVP

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Browns have found some linebacker depth to help ease the loss of Mack Wilson, who might still make it back this season.

They signed eight-year pro Malcolm Smith, a former Super Bowl MVP of Seahawks. In a 43-8 victory over the Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII after the 2013 season, Smith totaled 10 tackles, one fumble recovery, and an interception for a touchdown.

Not a bad haul for a seventh-round pick out of Southern California in 2011. Smith has appeared in 104 regular season games with the Seahawks (2011-14) Raiders (2015-16), 49ers (2017-18), Jaguars (2019) and Cowboys (2019). He has 295 career tackles, 10 forced fumbles, six sacks, four interceptions and three fumble recoveries.

To make room for him on the roster, the Browns waived center Casey Dunn, who left Saturday’s practice with a foot injury.

The Browns are still hoping that Wilson, who suffered a hyperextended knee Tuesday, can come back in a reasonable timeframe this season. A source told cleveland.com that Mack ‘definitely has a chance’ to return this season and that he might not need season-ending knee surgery.

Wilson ‘definitely has a chance’ to return this season; Kevin Johnson could be back fairly early

Wilson passed the COVID-19 testing protocol and practiced with the team Sunday afternoon. It was switched to a non-padded practice when it was first canceled and then rescheduled.

Browns safety Grant Delpit suffers season-ending torn Achilles, source says

BEREA, Ohio -- It was a horrible day day for the LSU Tigers at Browns training camp on Monday.

Second-round safety Grant Delpit, the No. 44 pick out of LSU, suffered a season-ending torn right Achilles and will undergo surgery to repair it, a league source told cleveland.com. An MRI confirmed the injury.

Starting cornerback Greedy Williams, Delpit’s former LSU teammate, also left the field with a shoulder injury and didn’t return. The extent of the injury is unknown.

Just before the start of team drills, Delpit was participating in some interception drills, backpedaling and catching the ball. He went up for a pass and came down in excruciating pain -- with no contact. He pounded his fist into the turf as trainers checked him while he was on his back.

They rolled him over on his stomach, and he grabbed at his calf area while grimacing. They called for the cart, and he was helped onto it. He had his head in his hands as he was carted off, just like linebacker Mack Wilson last week when he suffered the hyperextended knee. Delpit was still wincing in pain as he rode into the fieldhouse.

Shortly thereafter, Williams, the Browns’ starting cornerback and second-round pick last year, was checked on the sidelines by a trainer and then walked into the fieldhouse with one. He didn’t return to the field. Last season, Williams missed the first four games of the season with a pulled hamstring.

Losing Delpit is a tremendous blow to the Browns, who are already trying to figure out how to replace Wilson for an extended period of time. The Browns are hopeful that Wilson can make it back this season and that he won’t need season-ending knee surgery. He’s getting a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews.

At one point late in practice, Browns GM Andrew Berry, coach Kevin Stefanski and owner Jimmy Haslam were all huddled on the field, likely discussing the grim Delpit news.

The Browns also lost nickel cornerback Kevin Johnson to a lacerated liver last week. Johnson, who was having an excellent camp, was excelling in his role in sub-defenses and the Browns were excited about his progress. A source told cleveland.com that Johnson’s laceration was mild and that he should be back fairly early in the season.

The Browns drafted Delpit out of LSU to start at free safety this season. He was working behind Andrew Sendejo the first week in camp in the base defense, but with the first team in sub-defenses such as the dime and nickel. The starting strong safety is slated to be free-agent pickup Karl Joseph, but he’s also been limited in practice from the foot surgery he underwent last season, and sat out Monday’s session.

Last week, Delpit said the main thing he did in the offseason was recover from the high ankle sprain that he gutted it out on last season at LSU.

“I got healthy, that was the No. 1 thing I had to do is get all the way 100%,’' he said. “I was able to do that, and I was also working out every day. There was nothing else to do. Working out every day and trying to get right because I know once we get here, it will be full speed 100%. I was able to do that and get my body right, and I am great.”

The Browns had high hopes for the 2019 Jim Thorpe award winner for the nation’s top defensive back.

I'll guess Otto Graham. If I recall, he served in the Navy or Coast Guard.

Nope. Otto served in the USCG and coached at the Coast Guard Academy, but that's not him.

    {hint} wrong navy.
