"Retired" is a kind word. He got caught on air, pretty explicitly saying a homophobic slur with some emphasis. He called himself "a man of faith", apologized and begged explicitly to the "people who sign his checks"... I'll be real, even if I didn't know what he did, based on that apology I'm totally fine with him being done. Because that sure as hell wasn't an apology. I'm sure someone told him he was "retired" once it got circulated what had happened. This might not be a pandemic story he tells his grandkids... Edit: I hadn't heard the "You're a good man partner, hang in there" bit from his fellow broadcaster. I wouldn't have stuck my neck out like that. Woulda just moved the hell on...
I'm not typically in favor of "cancel culture". It has really gotten out of control. But this is an easy one.
I don't know anything about the guy, not being an avid baseball watcher. I recognize the voice, but that's it. But you are among many I've seen say that. Most people have had that reaction. There are grey areas to everything, and some people get caught unfairly in that grey. This seems like a case of being pretty black and white. You are right. Combine that with not being a homophobe and you should be set. He broke both those rules. Ah, well...
