Since the season may go to hell before it starts I wanted to know which quarterback you would take if you could make them the starter for this season. These are really the only options that could happen so who do you got?
I took Foles because he has shown flashes of brilliance in the past. Maybe I can catch lightening in a bottle one more time with him. Kaepernick ?? If the didn't have all that excess baggage, he'd be the obvious choice. But if he didn't have that baggage, he'd still be with the Niners and wouldn't be on this list anyway.
A little hungover but I just looked over the free agents and made a list. Mitch sucks so bad that some of these guys can be considered.
If Kaepernick had played recently, I'd be fine with that. But given it's been a few years, I wouldn't be comfortable with him being THE option. I agree that he could be the guy, but he'd need to prove he can play in-game just as well now as he did when he was at his peak. And that would be a huge gamble, especially if you're only giving me one guy. Foles is the only other choice on that list, and given the above, the one I'd go with. But it's not a choice I like.
Based on scheme it has to be Nick Foles. If we're going to have the 'Andy Reid' tree coach like Doug Pederson was in Philly when Foles has a fantastic run and looked like a great QB, no other presently-available name is a better option. Now if only Matt Nagy could scheme a run game half as effective as Pederson can, the offense can be just good enough to not leave the defense high and dry.
I get that..... But ......... If your the head coach, you'd be screaming "get that guy, get that guy" !!!! If your the owner or GM ??? "No f**king way" !!!! The NFL is a different bird than it was 10-20 years ago.
Of that list it is def Foles for me. He's had periods of high production in the past and in theory he is a very good scheme fit. That alone makes him a better option than the other floaters on this list. There is no way i'd bring Kaep in with a view to him being the starter in year 1, thats way too big a gamble given how long he's been out the league. He also had some Trubisky level seasons in SF. Speaking of which, Kaep has a rocket arm and great athleticism, but im not sure the mental processing aspect would be any better than Trubisky tbh and that more than anything is why Mitch has failed. This is starting to get into other thread territory, but the reason that list is so shitty is because of the Bears approach to the QB position this offseason. They went all in on Foles basically. There were an unprecedented number of names out the in FA for the position, it would not have been hard to take an extra flier on someone else with a lot of starter experience and just see if it sticks. No, none of Dalton/Winston/Newton were slam dunks, but for the chump change(in NFL terms) of $1mil i would've had no problem with it.
Foles gives me Trent Dilfer and Brad Johnson vibes. A good caretaker that will fail if he has to carry it for a lot of the schedule.
I would argue that if the scheme sucks ass it doesn't matter if we find a quarterback that can run it. It will just be more of the same shitty offense just looking better.
You have to reach back to 2013 to find that high production. He's been mediocre ever since. None of the quarterback issues will change until they just admit they picked wrong with Mitch and go after another young passer.
The scheme works. It just won 2 of the last 3 superbowls and got the bears to the playoffs a year ago. We saw it fail with Nagy last year because the bears couldn't run the ball to save their lives, and Tarik Cohen cant, in fact--run between the guards. So Nagy was always quick to abandon it. Enter Juan Castillo. He gets credit for Justin Forsett turning into something decent when he was the OLine/Run game guy in Baltimore in the early/mid 2010s, and worked with Shady McCoy in later 2010s in Buffalo with solid results. I'll have an open mind and give David Montomery the benefit of the doubt from last year because often he was getting hit before he got back to the LOS. The problem/key to having an average offense again I've mentioned before on the draft thread is the Bears Oline. My gripe, even with limited early picks was that one needed to be an OLinemen. Why? Charles Leno was the 6th most penalized OLinemen in football last year. New bear/likely starting RG Germaine Ifedi (in addition to being a 1st round bust) was the 2nd most penalized Olineman in 2019. 2 of the top 6 most penalized Olinemen are going to start on the same line. That's going to dictate whether the offense is still shitty because it shoots itself in the foot or if Castillo can go 3/3 in transforming run games when he takes over the job. They're tied for the 13th hardest schedule. But let's see who are the final opt outs by this afternoon's deadline before training camp injuries start to happen.
Right but right now they have to play a season before the draft, and a couple of months ago at draft time Jalen Hurts was the best option by the time it got to the bears to pick. And even if the offense shits the bed, Pace/Nagy get fired--the defense is still probably going to be good enough to have them miss the top 5. Meaning no Lawrence, Fields, and/or whomever else is College football's creme de la creme at the position. If you examine Foles' career, he's not sexy and I'm not going to try and sell you that he is. However, that's not to say he's had plenty of success in the Reid/WC offense. I can accept that Nagy/Pace are putting him in a solid position to succeed scheme wise (which I fully admit can go south quick because of my post above pointing out OLine problem). If the offense is clicking, I expect basic competence. And whomever is drafting next year for the bears--be it Pace or his replacement--you have to put him in a position to succeed. Mitch looks like the next Joey Harrington sure, but you put him with Frodo and Fox before junking that playbook for Matt Nagy's--which Mitch clearly cant grasp/isn't fast enough to be in the league without legs--along with the fact he couldn't beat out a WR 2 years in a row in college at QB and its pretty obvious to see how/why things went wrong.
