Big blow to the Bears defense as Eddie Goldman has opted out due to Covid concerns.

Patriots have had 6 players opt out already including Patrick Chung.

Deadline to opt out is August 3rd.

I think this number is going to grow exponentially up to Aug 3rd. The NFL is putting on a show now to try and convince people they're getting it right, but unless they can give the NFLPA something material, I expect there are going to be more veteran players to opt out. Of course, my pessimism has been hit and miss lately.

I don't have faith the NFL is going to get us a full season. Like many people, I see the current MLB problems as an omen (and not a surprising one). I guess we'll find out...

WOW, that is a shocking piece of news! Goldman will be missed. I knew nothing about this but guess it must've been part of those talks with the NFLPA i heard something about. This could potentially really screw a team over if it were to lose several key personnel. So i take it the player just leaves the team for a season unpaid and someone else takes the roster spot? And is that a year off his contract as well? Cos that would really suck in the case of a top player. CAP ramifications? This seems like a can of worms.

Again, not following as well now work has fired back up. I take there's some sort of strike.

Any chance teams can designate these player opt outs? I volunteer Jimmy Graham. Its for his own good, they say the elderly are particularly at risk from covid.

So many COVID cases that games have already been called off, and teams (so far just the Marlins, but doubtful they're the last) have had their seasons "put on hold" for the indefinite future.

The bubble concept with the NBA and NHL might work - no reports of COVID so far. But the NFL is taking the MLB's lead with their plans, to this point...

Yep...the players contract is moved forward a year and they receive a $150K stipend from whatever salary was due. If they opt out for legit medical reasons the stipend is 350K. Voluntary opt outs don't accrue a season.

Teams get back their cap dollars for this season minus any bonuses already paid. So with Goldman I believe he got a 3 million dollar bonus already so the Bears recoup something like 6 million in the cap for this season.

Hey is there anyway of looking at this like a positive? Like maybe someone (not mentioning any names) suddenly dies of old age? And no, I don't mean you Bww.

Goldman is a loss, hopefully he stays in shape for his return next year.

I'm still wondering how this is all going to work. No preseason games, will there won't there be fans? What will they do for breakouts?

    Always.

    What would that solve?

I thought that one way of making some positive changes to the team would be if the McCaskey's weren't owners anymore?

    What is a breakout?

Yeah in regards to football operations. That's not why players have opted out though.

Oh I know that part. It's because of Covid.

I may have been confused when I came into this thread. Sorry bout that :)
