This perspective can be illuminating. I think the discussion of "white" privilege though is only one of many discussions of privilege that we should be having, but we're not. There's male privilege. There's intelligence privilege. There's sexy/attractive privilege. There's social skills privilege. There's artistic talent privilege. There's athletic talent privilege. There's way more than I'm not thinking of. These are things, like the color of one's skin, that one cannot control. Any one of these privileges can dictate success or failure for someone of any color throughout their life in America. A white person who has none of these privileges, save for the color of their skin, might actually be at a disadvantage to a black person who has one or more of these other privileges. I guess that's probably debatable but frankly a debate no one wants to have. Kaepernick and Lebron like to highlight issues of real concern around racism in this country. And I'm glad they use their platform to do that. I'm wondering, has either ever acknowledged the privilege that they both have? That they are so athletically gifted to earn millions of dollars playing a game? In how many nations in history on this planet could they actually do that?
Everything you said Blang is critical to understanding current societal issues. This is like opening the door wide to better understanding.
Some interpret the black man is rising to his feet as I believe was the sculptor's intent - not kneeling submissively.
Actually I can totally see that Lyman. If his head was bowed it would be more of a defeated, submissive role. Thanks for pointing that out!
Some interpret the black man is rising to his feet as I believe was the sculptor's intent - not kneeling submissively. Well done Lyman.........look at the inscription on the Statue......."Emancipation"......the Freeing of Slaves.
That may or may not have been the intent, but visually how it's percieved is quite another. Considering how butt hurt so many people have gotten with a black man kneeling before a football game. Just put a football helmet on him and a flag behind it and they'll rip that motherfucker down.
My intention was NOT to recycle the Colin Kaepernick protest. But . . . I think I clearly demonstrated how the same image can be interpreted two vastly different ways. Now, if you did just a little research - you would find that Thomas Ball's intent (the sculptor) was, in fact, to depict a black slave rising to his feet.
I know it wasn't, but Colin Kaepernick's kneeling wasn't meant to be directed against the flag, and yet here we are. Do you see the irony in that?
No matter what you do or say there is and always will be a large amount of people that will always believe it was "disrespectful" to the flag and the anthem. Also veterans. But that's never what it was directed at.
Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable. - John F. Kennedy
“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” Colin Kaepernick - August, 2016 That quote doesn't leave a lot of room for interpretation.
You’re right. It clearly states he is protesting a country that has a history of oppression towards people of color.
If a corporation....say Nike....does something unethical, illegal, or immoral and a bunch of people boycott them......they aren’t boycotting shoes. They aren’t saying fuck shoes...I have no respect for shoes. They are aiming for the entity behind the shoes. That’s how kneeling during the anthem works.
People make mistakes, and I've said and done a lot of things I regret, but I've also learned from them. Lyman if you remember when he first started the protest he sat, and that pissed off a former veteran named Boyer. Boyer wrote him a letter and then you know what Colin did? he "LISTENED" to what he had to say. Boyer suggested he kneel because that's much like when a veteran kneels when a family is being presented a flag at the gravesite of a veteran to show respect. So you know what? I'm good with it, are you? That's exactly the problem today nobody listens anymore as most people get their news today from a clever meme off of Facebook and accept it as fact without even checking the veracity of it, because it appeals to their perception of reality. To quote a King Crimson lyric "silence drowns the screams" seems appropriate here as nobody listens we just ignore it if it doesn't affect us directly. BWW quote of JFK was spot on and fuck! JFK saw it, but we didn't because we weren't listening we remained silent. Question is are we going to LISTEN now? This is part of what i was driving at with my examples of Burns statues. And this example is even better actually. People's capacity to twist logic to suit their own agenda is boundless, which i believe is at least part of whats going on with this in general. It all seems so reasonable when its something you agree with, but once you start down that path i guarantee there will be one you don't agree with but by then its too late. And this will continue and continue until any sense of reason has gone. This Lincoln example i find particularly incredible actually. As has been noted, its fucking says EMANCIPATION at the bottom!! And even if that word wasn't present, with the slave's head raised and the statue featuring one of the nations biggest heros who's most famous act was freeing the slaves....how in the hell do you not give the benefit of the doubt here?? I guess because to doubt about something you have to first think about it.
Not sure i agree with this tuna buddy, because this pulling down statues thing is coming from the left, people angry at Kap tend to come from the right. I haven't seen efforts to pull down statues that people on the left consider important. But its possible ive missed it. And ive voted both over the years so this is meant as an objective observation.
So several pages ago gideon asked this One other thing I want to know is, why isn’t the virus getting more out of control with all of these people in large groups protesting? And tuna said this We'll see in the coming days. It takes 7-14 days to show symptoms. And now, some 17days later we have this vvvvv Now, this won't be solely be the result of the protests, in many places lockdown was abandoned too early. There was also the matter of idiots with guns occupying city halls... Its true the increases aren't uniform, and i note Minnesota seems unchanged interestingly. But on the other hand new cases seem to be overwhelmingly among the young who were also the overwhelming majority at protests. All in all, the degree to which protests have fuelled this increase in covid cases will always be debateable and that opinion will prob depend massively on your view of the protests. But it seems beyond doubt the protests did indeed play a role in this increase, the timeframes make it undeniable. Again there are other factors too, arguably bigger ones than protesting such as overall terrible crisis management from authorities. But unless you believe in massive coincidence this info suggests protests have = an increase in infections, which will = more deaths. The goal may well have been noble, but sadly this was always the price given current circumstances. Simple logic.
Funny that you used Nike in your example. Kaepernick didn't (doesn't) have any issues being compensated by a company that oppresses their employees in other countries. I believe, on multiple occasions in the past, I've made my position crystal clear on this. I hold the flag and national anthem of the United States in very high esteem - behind only my family and my faith. I also respect the rights of people to peacefully protest. That said, I would rather the NFL stop playing our national anthem prior to games and give that 2 minutes, 30 seconds to the players to protest to their hearts content.
I wonder . . . Could the increase in confirmed cases have something to do with the increase in testing ?
