Been thinking about this. Have to agree with you Lyman. It's getting a bit tedious with "click-bait" headlines instead of real data and actual news regarding this whole thing. It's also starting to be overdone and saturated with the coverage to the point that I'm not watching anymore. I'm just waiting for Gov. DeWine to give us the "all clear" when it's safe to come out again. The one thing that really pisses me off is that we can instantly find $2 Trillion to bail out businesses (and yes I'm all for helping out the small to mid-size businesses....especially local - but screw Big Oil, the airlines, etc. who have been pulling in billions in profits for years). And we can't raise the minimum wage or find a couple of billion to expand health care coverage for all or even to pay for school lunches for the needy. This whole thing has just pointed out quite plainly the financial inequality going on in this country and how skewed against the average Joe this system is getting to be.
Duff, you kinda morphed two things into one response. My frustration with the MSM and/or government leaders (more so at the State level than the Federal level) is that they're (the leaders) making decisions and putting policies in place based on woefully incomplete raw data and the media takes that and (IMHO) intentionally incites panic. Responsible journalists (an oxymoron): Should have pointed out the data used to make the decisions that affect everyday life is incomplete due to lack of available, accurate test results. Would have reported the number of people who have recovered with the same fervor as the number of people who have died. Should have put this into an understandable perspective by; Reporting the (suspect) results on a "per capita" or population density basis. Comparing this outbreak to a prior "pandemic" such as the H1N1 (swine flu) from 2009. Would it surprise anyone that the infection rate / death toll from H1N1 isn't that different from Covid-19? Regarding our government leaders. People in general are putting a Super Hero cape on our Governor because he enacted a stay at home policy. IF this pandemic is as serious as he and the MSM made it out to be, then why didn't he include enforcement measures in his order? If you got caught on the road and you weren't a 1st responder, manufacturer or distributor of medical supplies, distributor or retailer of food or groceries or maintained public utilities then you should have received a healthy fine and perhaps even had your vehicle impounded. Instead he comes out with a list of "essential businesses" that included liquor stores and then adds to this joke by allowing carryout alcoholic drinks that, essentially, make open containers now legal in the state of Ohio. I don't know about you, but to me, this reeks of political lobbying at its finest. The second part of your morph deals with issues that are far more deep rooted than the problems related to Covid-19 and I'm running out of space on my soapbox.
First off, I may be an Independent, but I lean mostly Democrat but do agree with some conservative policies. So you can base any response based on my viewpoint. And please, I'm on a rant, so you may just want to scan the following diatribe. Second, I wholeheartedly agree with you on needing a stricter "stay at home" policy. For phuques sakes, this isn't a partisan issue. This affects everybody. Hell, we know a family who all four have the virus. The son plays soccer with my boy. It has (pardon the expression) hit very close to home for me. It scares the shit out of me although not to the point of germaphobia.....just very cautious. IMHO our Republican leaders (especially those higher up in DC) are more worried about the tanking economy than getting people infected and possibly killed. I myself have no idea if there is a balance point to "stay at home" vs. "back to work". From science officials, I gather they want everyone to just stay home for a quicker result to flatten the quantity and rate of infection. On the other hand, Trump blathers on about getting people back ASAP (it was supposed to be Easter - which probably was just an attention grab for the religious crowd to increase positive ratings numbers.) Honestly, the Big Orange at present only worries about ratings as can be seen in his bragging about his ratings for his Covid-19 daily press briefings. Just appalling to me that this matters more than human lives as the death toll mounts. Add in the dis-information he spouts as well as he dismisses his science advisers. Don't forget the idiots who were protesting down at the Ohio Statehouse the other day to end the stay at home order so the economy could get going again when people went back to work. Jackasses one and all as they exposed themselves to an unnecessary situation. I'd say to arrest them all but where to put them since people are being released from jails and prisons due to the virus? On top of the "ratings grab," it's also a political strategy to remove blame from Trump's own policies and doings. He has kicked the can down the road and left it up to states to figure it all out. And sits on the necessary supplies and won't disperse them (for example) to NY state due to his ongoing feud with Cuomo and of course possible future indictments by the SDNY waiting to serve him sealed indictments upon leaving office. It again boggles my mind that our President can be so petty as to place human lives at risk for his own personal agenda and claims that "it's not his problem." I digress though and apologize. This is the wrong place to post all this. This is supposed to be a "how are you doing thread" and, well, I'm doing alright but growing more angry everyday. For the most part, I'm done with my rant as I'm still sorting out my thoughts on this. Again, I'm sorry. If you want to continue to discuss this, we can start a different thread. Don't have much else to do for the next few months.
The thing that bothers me more than anything else is the comparison to other viruses. It's not necessarily the media's responsibility to educate people. In 2020 you can do that pretty easily yourself. This virus is the worse virus in 100 years. Had we done nothing there would be millions dead.
Great Post Beach...........I really believe the Chinese Government needs to Outlaw and Ban "Wet Markets".....look at where these Virus come from..... And it is disgusting what they eat in China.......and the virus passes from animal/mammal to human.
If the Democratic Party wasn’t so busy trying to screw Trump we might have had a quicker response to this and not be the world wide leader in confirmed cases and deaths
I agree. They have culpability. But we knew of this risk years ago and we've been sleeping at the wheel while places like South Korea and Taiwan prepared.
If you truly believe that you fall into AT LEAST one of these categories... 1) You haven't taken the time to educate yourself on zoonotic diseases. 2) You live in a bubble where you only consume the news from a source that lines up with your way of thinking. 3) You repeat things you hear and read without any concern as to whether or not what you are saying is true i.e. credibility doesn't rank very high on your list of important qualities. 4) You're a republican. 5) You're an idiot.
Here's a good read for anyone. I'm not sure if the Japan Times is part of the awful fake news syndicate or not but for those who would like to educate themselves on what we need to do the next time we're in this situation here ya go... https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2...z02kmKBRvk6O-H6oDsy5e9ehlAlI5z70#.XpMe6OpKiUl
If you believe we would have had a quicker response if not for the democratic party - yep you're probably an idiot.
Hey guys, just a heads up - There’s too much anger involved in political discussion at the moment for anything good to come out of it. I’m asking, please, just agree to disagree and move on from this part of the conversation before it turns into something ugly.
It shouldn't be a political discussion. We failed collectively. We need to all learn from this collectively. It didn't have to be this way.
We are the worst hit country by this pandemic. Seeing how we are supposedly the most advanced this shouldn’t be. China has 5 times our population and about a fifth of our problems with the virus
I don't trust China's reports but I trust South Korea and Taiwan and the things they did to control the outbreaks were incredible. Contact tracing using apps and phone GPS, airport screening from the beginning, lots and lots of testing. And they didn't have to shut down the economy to do it. South Korea was the first country outside of China to have 5,000 infected and they kept it at 10,000 overall with very few deaths. Also helped that there was one clear message from the medical community that people could believe in and follow instead of the infighting and propaganda. So the public was very cooperative and acted as one community with a common goal. We need to test, test, test if we want to open things back up again.
I don’t trust China either. But look at the maps. The US looks like a stupid nation compared to almost every other nation. I’m white and I hate to say anything racial but seeing how it’s about my race I don’t feel as bad about it. White people controlled nations seem to be the worst at dealing with this pandemic
