The Michigan State game kind of emphasizes some of what I’m looking at with Dobbins. He has 4 big runs but only really has to make a defender miss in one of them. The rest is just repetitive rushing with little creativity. He’s a bit of a long strider that gets up to speed rapidly but doesn’t downshift when needed. Could simply be the type of stride he has makes that difficult. He doesn’t offer much in the way of horizontal movement and if forced to reset the answer doesn’t come to him quickly. He has power but it’s not consistently overwhelming. I can buy into the big vertical number and I can see a 40 time anywhere from 4.45 to 4.55. That would track with a player that only needs a couple steps to get up to full speed and relies on long strides to cover ground at 5’9” and 209 pounds. Part of what helps in his speed factor is that he can use those long steps to bend the edge while continuing to accelerate out of the curve. That’s why he can run off tackle at full tilt to hit a Jenna Jameson size hole, speed through and out of it.
Had this idea last night, whether due to an inability to find useful tape or just an inability on my part to decide on the best fit for him, I give you My 5 toughest evaluations: 1) Ashtyn Davis - Just seemed like even among the safeties he was off screen much more often on tape. Had a tough time deciding what role I would like him best in. 2) Trevon Diggs - I’m having a hard time deciding what tier he belongs in. 3) All the top pass rushers - I just feel it’s not a very strong year for rushers. Personally I find all the top ones have glaring holes in their game that need fixing. Edit: Not including Chase Young. League all his own. 4) Yasir Durant - T or G? In what scheme would be his best fit, or what would give him the best chance to succeed. 5) Devin Duvernay or Bryan Edwards - Edwards tape was full of bubble screens, so clearly he has some strength running and decent elusiveness, but couldn’t see a lot of him route running. Duvernay clearly has some athletic ability, but I’m struggling to decide where I think he will fit best.
All this talk about JK Dobbins is fine. Put him on the Steelers with Bens new bionic arm and he could get 2000 rushing yards. Only one problem is that bionic arm will want to throw the ball 650 times. Alls the Steelers need assuming Ben is in good health is a bell cow RB and one trick pony take the top off WR and they will eradicate all black birds, run through piles of crap and tame tigers
That is a legit fear that I have...Pittsburgh loves their Buckeyes, and I could see that happening on day 2 for sure. Hopefully not.
At least I did much better last year...Can't remember the order, but I know I was high on Deebo, McLaurin, AJ Brown, Marquise Brown and of course D.K....They all had their moments. The only wildcard I had in there was Andy Isabella, and with just 9 receptions, he just wasn't able to get the opportunities. I'll be interested to see how all these WR's progress in year 2.
Interesting that you went that far back to find some stuff Tim. If I have a weakness in scouting it's that I have a tendency to focus on the more recent tape, unless I'm keenly aware of an injury that makes the recent stuff not a great example. I doubt I watched tape for even one prospect in this draft from prior to 2018. Unless I'm aware of an injury my tendency is to watch 3 games each, 2019, 2019, 2019, or 2018, 2019, 2019. The thinking behind it is that I'll get a better idea of the more polished version of who it is I'm thinking of drafting, assuming of course that even in college they are learning little nuances year to year that help their game evolve. There may be hidden examples (like potentially Edwards) who I would be best off going very far back for.
Edwards is like Lamb in that I have been tracking both for quite awhile. CeeDee I viewed as a first round talent early on and Edwards has always felt like a second/third round player waiting to get recognized. If he could have participated in the combine I believe he quickly becomes part of the overall discussion about the top WRs in this class. This game stands out in my memory because of how much attention Clemson put on Bryan and the separation he still created. If he had a quarterback with better ball placement he is probably in consideration for a top 5 ranking all over. The same could be said for Peoples-Jones and they both will probably end up higher in my rankings when I post the final scores.
You guys don’t go back very far. I go all back to birth. If he hits the hole quickly and gets through fast he will be a great RB If he doesn’t slop his breast milk very much he will have good hands If he throws his food across the room and it sticks to the wall he will be a good QB If he tackles the dog with ease he will be a good MLB If he kicks his toys across the room he will be a good kicker If he gets in the cat box and tries to eat poop he will be a Browns player
Last week I made a post (somewhat tongue in cheek) about the Bengals not picking Joe Burrows with the #1 overall pick and selecting Chase Young instead. That got me thinking about how a decision like that would affect the rest of the 1st round so I put together a "What If" 1st round mock to see. I learned two things: Putting together a 1st round mock is much harder to do than I realized. The trickle down ripple effect went much farther than I thought it would. So, without further adieu, here's my "What If 1st Round Mock"
He could be possibly the pick too. They need a RB who can catch. Imagine if they still had Hunt last season.
I can’t remember where I read it but he lined up in the slot over 20% of the time he was on the field last season. He’s easily the best option as a pass catching RB. Could be a guy the Titans could team up with Henry.
