Just logging in. Thank you to @LAOJoe for the phone reminders. Let me get caught up and I'll blast out my picks along with the autos that are coming up.
I have a list for Tampa and JD and I have a trade for one of Seattle's picks that we are getting ready to confirm.
My take on the class is that there might some here who do start as a rookie, but I don't think even the top three guys would be above average starters in year one. Basically the entire group needs a year of development time before they will be able to make significant contributions. And once you factor that in, sheer numbers take over and wipe out any sense of urgency. This is where the math takes over, but the math here is much easier than the card trick. When I reviewed potential UDFA targets, by my own count I saw 18 prospects in this TE class that I think could be contributors for my team in year two. Maybe more - I stopped there figuring that would last through the draft and two rounds of UDFAs. The catch is that we've seen more than 16 TEs go in the draft only four times in the last 20 years. 13 to 16 happens all the time, but more than 16 only happens about one year out of five. So if you have more than that on your list, the odds are already pretty strong that you can get a true developmental candidate as a UDFA or take your choice among many candidates by selecting one in the seventh round. As for Asiasi, he has decent speed and agility, pretty good hands, and is an adequate but not polished route runner. Needs a heck of a lot of work on blocking and also work refining his positioning. I see good potential there - but for 2021 and beyond.
The TE conversation has been a fun one this year. I agree with you no one jumps out as a heavy year one contributor. But even that actually depends on your teams current roster makeup and the scheme you plan to run. For example take the Colts or Titans. They’ve been employing a decent amount of 3TE and wing looks. You could argue that for their offensive goals a 3rd TE with any receiving ability at all could be well worth a midround pick. Especially when you factor in the cash some of these middling TEs have been getting in FA lately. All that said, and having a decent understanding of the way Dimitroff has been building the Falcons, Atlanta is by no means one of those teams. He’s much more likely to wait until round 5 or later like you did, ala Eric Saubert.
If you guys had to pick two other position groups that you feel have extremely empty cupboards this season, who you going with?
Linebacker isn’t particularly strong. Edge is a bit iffy for true difference makers too. Whatever it is, it’s probably on defense. WR is historically good. RB ain’t half bad either. And OL has a bit of meat to it. Not great inside, but not bad either. TE isn’t bad despite it’s lack of a Hockenson or Fant type this year.
