2020 GMO Free Agent Bids

That's how it was before after you were awarded them. It wasn't an issue before the few times people went back into a bid because it felt responsible. We've had more chaos here in a day and a half than the last few combined just because it feels a little undiscipled compared to years passed. And I'm not talking about crazy bids. That's always been a staple of this exercise.

No, I do NOT agree that, if you rescind a bid, you are out on that player.

    Please Note:
    1. All RFA, ERFA and tagged players have been moved to the "Signed" tab.
    2. I had apparently made this harder than it needs to be. Moving forward . . . there will be no "Awarded" tab.
    3. If the 48 hour clock has passed with no new bids, and the high bidder hasn't posted that the player has been signed - then the Status column will simply say "Awarded".

Not sure what to even make of this sentence.....
How do you qualify it as chaos? We do this for fun, right? I'm having fun.

This feels like rewarding bad faith bids with a second chance at a discount.

So you know how after you win a bid you have 24 hours to choose to sign him? This was done so you have 24 hours to get you cap together OR to decide between multiple FAs. At that point when you rescind you couldn't bid once again. Reasoning was that once the player agreed to sign it was a dick move to bid again, plus to prevent bad faith moves.

Teams with seemingly infinite cap space always find it fun. Although a certain team I wonder if doesn't get the idea that they need to hold that space for a few years down the road (won't say who).

Have you never been in the heat of the battle and made a decision you wished you hadn't ? Never been so focused on one thing that allowed 10 other things to kick your ass ?

Honestly, I did not know that rule. I thought it was something you had to do immediately, which is why I rescinded on Reiff in the first place. If i'd have known I had 24 hours to decide, I could have seriously held up the process, no?

Then they shouldn’t be able to bid beyond their previous bid if that’s the one in play. If it’s not the one in play, then they are out on that player.

If not, then there is nothing stopping someone from bidding all the way back up to or past where they originally rescinded.

This is a fun exercise but the rescinding thing is dumb and a hassle for the mods. Get rid of it and just limit the number of leading bids a team can have at one time if you want people to be disciplined with their bidding.

Perhaps but it's there to give teams time to make moves they need to make for the signing. It's never been a real issue before because it allows everyone to have a better grasp of the situation. Sometimes guys are rescinded but at that point it's usually clear it was in good faith.

The rule is there to help prevent owners from having to rescind other bids or go over the cap.

All of the rules are designed to make it as fair as possible for everyone involved.

FWIW, I think it should be cut and dried... If you rescind on a player, you are out on that player. Previous bids are irrelevant. If it goes ATW back to $0, so be it....

That is something we had or almost had once but then everyone was pretty well disciplined and handled it well so it was ultimately not enforced. If this happens I feel we may need to have higher starting bid limits so we don't have people get guys for cheap because other teams are handcuffed from making bids.

    Be advised . . .

Both Leonard Floyd -and- Tony Jefferson are back in the UFA pool.

After reading back a few pages that popped up as I was updating the tracker spreadsheet, I feel I need to defend myself.

It's no secret that my Browns are in serious need of offensive tackles, ILB's and safeties (among some other not so pressing needs). I believe I read the pulse of this group correctly and put the Franchise Tag on Joe Schobert. I then initiated bids on Vonn Bell and Clinton-Dix and both bids started to escalate rapidly. I also bid on two tackles (at $6M each). Before I knew it, the bidding on those tackles reached franchise tag levels. Admittedly, I had a hissy fit and plopped down $18M bids for each of them. The next morning, cooler heads prevailed and I rescinded both of those bids.

Then, it became apparent that the resulting cap damage from the safeties wouldn't be as bad as I expected so I sharpened my pencil and went back to Plan A.

If the Quinn thing was handled improperly and I need to wait 48 hours I will do so. I agree there has been a lot of rescinding I actually toyed with idea of leaving my bid out on Jones because I hate the idea of rescinding an offer. But I was only willing to go so high on him because I gave up on Quinn... Which I guess is why I hate rescinding offers it screws up all sorts of things for other teams.

Expanding on this thought... I hate the idea of calling Jones agent and saying "Sorry we went in another direction" that's not how real teams work. You identify your guys and you go hard and try to bring them in. When their agent tells you its off you go to plan B. If a GM was engaging in bad faith bids... he wouldn't last long as a GM. I always try to only have active bids out to guys I actually will sign if that offer goes through. But when someone rescinds, decisions I made at the time (IE moving on to someone else) get called into question and I have to figure out if I can still make that move.

A year or so ago we had one guy driving up the market at a single position by just bidding on them all and then he signed one guy and rescinded everything else. It felt... bad. I want to avoid that kind of crap again if at all possible.

@Tim, @Willie, and I started to prepare for this year's GMO back in November, 2019. We made every attempt we could think of to clarify the rules, line up participants, streamline the Moderator tasks and generally kick it off on time with little or no chaos.

I won't make the same mistake next year.

I knew Joe's line was going to go over like a lead balloon. Ridiculous, considering all the effort you have effort put in...(shrug)

Lyman, for the record I think you are doing an admirable job here. The reality is that something pops up every year. This year I think so many people have competing priorities its resulting in a general overall strangeness. But there is ALWAYS something.
