That's not how it works, the stock market is influenced by hundreds of different factors.. It sold off yesterday mainly because of oil and gas stocks, the virus made things worse. What happens globally ends up having an effect domestically sooner or later. And the stock market isn't personal, it wont sell off because it hates someone. This is how children reason.
Out of interest buddy, did this guy talk about/take into account the differences in ideology/psychology between people in China and the west? You prob don't know the answer but has this guy ever been to China? Because I have, many times, and I can tell you there are some massive differences which are very relevant to this. I also don't believe there is any real importance to that 60k number as it pertains to westerns countries. JMO, but containing/minimising this virus during this year is gonna come down to one thing and one thing only. Personal discipline. And in that sense western liberal democracies with their emphasis on freedom and the modern me me me attitude are at a spectacular disadvantage to the Chinese. Chinese people are very interesting, they get more like us each year in terms of consumerism etc and yet always in the background there is this virtually universal acquiescence to the demands of the communist system and what that can mean to basic freedoms we take for granted. They're still all in on communism over there and when high command tells them to do something they do it. And thb re coronavirus its helped them as a country big time. Tens of millions of people told to lock down virtually over night and they all did it. Immediately. You have to be impressed. But the real question is can people in the west pull that off and I have real doubts they can. We may be too selfish. We may lack enough personal discipline. Personally im not surprised Italy is being particularly hard hit by this. The Italian people have many admirable qualities, but selflessness, personal discipline and cool logic are not among them imo. FWIW ive read reports that this exclusion zone in the north is being barely enforced. People still coming and going as usual for the most part, because they have places to be and things to do. Good luck Italy. One more thing about the Chinese. Their people did great in possibly bringing coronavirus under control, but they also had huge help from their leaders who went into overdrive building hospitals and providing as much care/resources as you could expect. What do countries like the US & UK have. Clowns like Donald Trump and Boris Johnson, providing hardly any leadership. Trump in particular is the exact opposite of who you would want in charge right now. Add in the amercian healthcare system, which to me does not seem remotely suited for this one and its a problem. Considering we've never faced a threat quite like this in the modern age and there's WAY more we don't know than do....that seems a pretty bold prediction. I see it not ageing well. I don't know how you can say Europe will far any worse than the US unless your only goal is to sooth public opinion and avoid panic.
With 3 confirmed cases in Ohio, the Ohio State University has cancelled in-person classes thru March 30th. “We are suspending face-to-face instruction in lectures, discussion sections, seminars and other similar classroom settings and moving to virtual instruction, effective immediately and through at least Monday, March 30," the statement said. All university-sponsored international travel is also suspended.
These are all sold out, someone told me, (not sure if it's true),on amazon some of these were going for $100 CAN
Governor of Ohio just ordered all OHSAA basketball tournament games to be played without spectators. Refunding tickets as we speak. Why not just cancel it all? This isn't a memory these kids want anyway.
I should've been more clear - I don't necessarily put stock into what he was saying. He's a professional guesser, and doesn't have to be right in order to get paid. But it was an interesting take that I hadn't seen elsewhere, so felt like sharing (mixing up the content, here). Your comments and take on the international aspect of it has been WAY more valuable and informative than anything else I've gotten. As always, you have my sincere thanks. I won't have a chance to read it in more detail until later tonight, but looking forward to it.
I was just talking to somebody about colleges not doing "in person"classes, and was wondering about all the students still living on campus/near campus. Have they all gone home since they can do on-line stuff? What about out of state or out of country students? Can imagine going home not being an option for quite a large number of students. And what about the dorms? Those places already have colds and the flu sweep thru them like wildfire. Haven't heard about them being closed.
Students in Erie college are being advised to stay in Erie and take the recommended precautions set by the CDC.
Every area is at a different level, schools that are closed, (that would include dorms which have already been paid for), are in danger areas.
