The Here We Go Yet Again "New and Improved" Browns Coaching Search Thread

Haslam will get it right eventually...I'd rather have Jimmy than an owner that doesn't care at all. That's what we had to deal with when little Lerner had control.

It's been brutal for Browns fans. Way beyond what most fans can ever possibly comprehend...

Are there better owners in this league? Of course....

I'm just happy to have an owner that is into it and wants to win...

Just a comment of mine where I stated our owner was so stupid he was looking to interview someone under 5' to satisfy the Mickey Rooney Rule.

Not the biggest Dorsey honk, and in fact started to question him well before anything was "Bubbling in Berea" (there's your Browns podcast name and I want 5% every time someone says it)... but can you imagine letting go of a GM who, despite some obvious shortcomings, has added more talent to this roster than we've had since 1999... only to hire Jim Schwartz or Brian Daboll?

The *primary* reason for jettisoning The Dorse was strong personality and he wouldn't be able to work with a mega-coach like McCarthy, or McDaniels. That's fine, if you bring those guys in. Not so fine if you're bringing in a re-tread like Schwartz, or a first-timer like Daboll (or even Stefanski, Roman, Saleh, etc.).

Defensively, I don't think there's a question he's got the chops. Offensively, he'd be pulling from the Shannahan tree. Kyle Shannahan is great... there's no guarantee his coordinators and assistants are. No one's really come out from under Kyle yet...

    Wow.

With Panthers and Giants vacancies filled... Cleveland is the last team to hire a head coach.

I think this goes to show just how teams (at least the Giants) think of McDaniels.....and it doesn't appear too good.

Well, working with a GM in Dave Gettleman was also not going to be a big selling point for McDaniels.

When Haslam fired John Dorsey, the move for McCarthy or McDaniels (or Urban Meyer) was basically telegraphed. With all these assistants they're interviewing, you almost need that bigger-than-life GM to help them, even if you changed the reporting structure. I suspect that they could also be getting consideration in case Josh gets cold feet (again) and spurns the team.

That said, the writing is on the wall in New England and he'd be smart to get out while he can. I think we, as Browns fans, ought to start getting comfortable with "Coach McDaniels" for at least the next year.

Have to disagree with you on this. Ain't gonna happen. I have a feeling the "HC search crew" is (at least somewhat) listening to Depodesta after his last 2 choices for HC would have been much better than what was hired.

The numbers are actually very impressive. He just doesn't look so good when his 3rd string coverage can't handle anything. NOt perfect but Schwartz has actually been very good. As a HC though? I dunno if I'd trust him there again.

Well, if you all want my conspiracy theory...

I think McDaniels is only viewing one job seriously, the one in Cleveland BECAUSE of what @SAS is talking about. He would gain full control just like Bill has in New England and hand pick a GM that will do his bidding....

The conspiracy aspect is that the New England job is also up in the air.

Question 1; Will Tom Brady, as it has been eluded to, demand the highest QB contract ever, which is something he has never done over the course of his career.
Question 2; There is speculation that Belichick could also leave. There is a hundred questions about his contract and no one on the outside really knows when it ends.

So, if Craft steps in and simply says, "Tom has been a good soldier all these years and now wants to be paid for it, let's give him a deal to retire a Patriot".. Does Bill say, "That's your decision as an owner, I cannot do my job properly with that kind of salary handcuff, therefore I feel it's time for me to move on.".

Thus, McDaniels stepping in for Belichick as the Patriots HC.

Bill's been there 20 years, that's unheard of from nearly any generation of NFL coaching.

Halas was with the Bears for 40 years, 72 at retirement
Lambeau was with the Packers for 30 years, 55 at retirement (which is crazy!! He became HC at the age of 23!)
Landry was with the Cowboys 29 years, 64 at retirement
Shula was with the Dolphins for 25 years, 65 at retirement
Owen was with the Giants for 23 years, 55 at retirement
Noll was with the Steelers for 23 years, 59 at retirement

Then there is Bill's 20 year run in New England....Bill is older than all others on that list above except Halas when they retired. At 67, Bill can simply say that he's proven all he has to prove and start the clock on his HOF induction.

That's the thing... McDaniels is such a flake. Mike Lombardi was on local Cleveland radio talking about how, in 2014, the group flew out to Foxborough, interviewed him, got back on the plane and felt 100% confident he was the guy and was going to be the coach. By the time they land, he had withdrawn his name from consideration. A few years later, he's agreed in principle to be the coach of the Colts and is actively hiring assistant coaches when he abruptly walks away.

What is he hearing/getting from New England that keeps him around and keeps him entertaining job offers but never taking them?

I really don't want MickyD. I have to question a guy who's head coach is the best there's ever been, and has a QB who could draw up and execute the O without much help. Nice work if you can get it.

Couple that with his Jekyl and Hyde imitations when asked to coach previously, and I'm just not in.

Give me a defensive guy who won't cater to Baker, but demand performance from him, and can identify and hire a good OC, and I'm good.

I'll admit I'm not disappointed that McCarthy isn't our guy, and I'm intrigued by the Giants hire, who was on no ones radar. I'll be interested to see how he does.

The clock has stopped ticking on the "name" guys out there, so the only pressure is on getting someone in, so we can choose from the broadest pool of assistants and coordinators. No small thing.

Frankly, McDaniels seems inevitable, since we canned our GM, and have openly talked about the HC being a significant contributor to the GM selection. Which other candidate would warrant that

Anybody have a take on Eric Bienemy? His name has circulated for years now, but no takers, so far.
