McCarthy is in town for his interview today. I hope they do their due diligence and interview a few coaches. But McCarthy does have a Super Bowl ring as a head coach. McDaniels rode Bill's coat tails (edit: And drafted Tebow). Just sayin'........

Anybody think we could tempt Ozzie Newsome out of retirement to take the GM spot?

Y'all... this season may have broken me. I'm not going to go into the toilet and become 100% negative like some of my d**k rider Bears stalkers want, but I'm certainly not capable of trusting Jimmy and Dee Haslam to make the right call on the coaching search.

    1. Who's conducting the coaching search? Right now... the top guy in the organization is Paul DePodesta who doesn't even *live* in Cleveland. To his credit, he's got the track record and receipts to prove he was right: wanted Sean McDermott - they hired Hue Jackson; wanted Kevin Stefanski - they hired Freddie Kitchens. But there's no guarantee that DePodesta picks the right guy this time, or that the Haslams listen to him. There's also the issue of their son-in-law being the other leader in the coaching search department... what?! And you can see this when names like Urban Meyer (serious interest) or Josh McDaniels surface... McDaniels is the Haslam's white whale and a coach they've wanted since 2012. Urban is a "sexy" pick that would get them accolades which they seem to value over actual success.

    2. Who's said head coach hiring? Freddie Kitchens, Mike Pettine, Rob Chudzinski, Pat Shurmur... these were all *good* dudes and well-respected enough coordinators to merit head coaching job interest. All four guys were first-time head coach, as many of the current candidates for the job would be. Besides meddling ownership and issues with the front office, what else was their downfall? Assistant coaches.

Freddie could not have picked worse coordinators. Mike Pettine actually got one right (Kyle Shannahan) but put too much trust in his buddy on defense. Rob Chudzinski may have made the right hires, but only got a season so it's impossible to know. Norv Turner, at least, was a well-respected guy. Shurmur didn't even hire an OC at first and then hired a bum to coach the defense. I'm genuinely less-concerned with who's leading the show than who's helping that guy run the operation.

    3. Who's the general manager? And are we going to do this backwards (again)? The rumors are all over right now... if it's McDaniels, he'll bring in Caserio or Zeigler. If it's Stefanski, they'll reconnect with Andrew Berry who's in Philly. If it's McCarthy, then Eliot Wolf can assume the GM role. Maybe those couplings will work, or maybe they won't. Will the GM (and coach, to an extent) view the roster as having the kind of players they want for their "ideal" system? Or will they want to overturn a good portion of it to bring in "their" guys?

We already saw John Dorsey turnover this roster substantially and a lot of that came back to bite us.

    4. What's the verdict on Baker? Does the new regime come in with Baker as "the guy"? McDaniels loved Mayfield pre-draft, from all reports. McCarthy maybe wouldn't get along with a Mayfield after having Rodgers for 13 seasons. Do you marry the new HC/GM to #6? The answer should be "yes", but that could limit some interest and candidates.

    5. What do we know? Well... the names so far in the candidate pool for starters: Urban Meyer (fHC Ohio State), Josh McDaniels (OC Patriots), Mike McCarthy (fHC Packers), Robert Saleh (DC 49ers), Kevin Stefanski (OC Vikings), Brian Daboll (OC Buffalo), Greg Roman (OC Ravens), and Eric Bieniemy (OC Chiefs). Obviously, there's risks involved with every one of those guys. You can probably count me out on guys like Urban Meyer, Eric Bieniemy, and Brian Daboll. Color me intrigued by Stefanski and Saleh. Then guys that wouldn't really move the needle but I totally get are the Mc's: McDaniels (#AhabsWhiteWhale) and McCarthy. Then there's the guy I want:

    If I’m the decision maker?

Yep. I’m not turning over full control to the guy that drafted Tebow in the first round in Denver and caught a hangnail in the 11th hour with the Colts.

Sorry... I read that as Jimmy Haslam being the decision maker. I would probably tend to agree with you, although there is a chance he's learned from his mistakes.

It does make me uneasy thinking about him getting to hand-pick him GM though.

So Greg Roman is my #1 with a bullet (rushing offense with him as OC: 8, 4, 3, 4, 1, 1, 1) but one thing Urban does have going for him -- especially in mind view -- is his ability to attract and identify the best assistant coaching talent. That's always been one of his strongest attributes and he would be able to function as a true head coach (allow OC to call plays, allow DC to focus on defense). The college game very rarely seems to transition to the pros but (1) times are changing and the guys may be more agreeable to a college coach now, and (2) Urban has shown the ability to tailor teams to the strength of his roster.

Ultimately, I think -- like Saban in prior years -- it would be tough to pull a college coach away from whatever program he wanted and Urban's also had a history of shorter-stints (although so have Browns coaches, so... ).

Since we are picking and choosing..

    My guy:

    What I want in a new HC;

    1. Experience
13 years as Head Coach of the Packers
    2. Success
    127-77-2 as HC
10-8 in playoffs (in playoffs 9 out of his 12 1/2 seasons)
In NFC Championship Game 4 times
    2010 Super Bowl Champion
    3. Credibility
A long list of coaches at his disposal to build a staff
Instant GM in Eliot Wolf who is already in the building
    4. Age vs. experience
I know the youth movement is on, but despite his 12 1/2 seasons as a HC, McCarthy is only 56 years young. He would be well suited for a long tenure of 10-15 years, then retire.
    5. Discipline
It is well documented that he had his run-ins with the mouthy Aaron Rodgers, though Rodgers adamantly denies this as mostly rumors. McCarthy is head strong and hopefully could usher in some sense of accountability that was absent this past season.

This is the known vs. the unknown that has me broken in two. Who doesn't want the up and coming coordinator who just needs his chance to shine? Well, we've been there and done that too many times for my liking. This time around, I want someone that actually has had the job for a reasonable amount of time so that the window of rookie mistakes is eliminated.

@IrishDawg42 ... can't disagree with your take at all. My concern is less with McCarthy and more with Browns ownership. Will they have the patience to sit through a season or two as McCarthy tools the team to match his approach.

So far... their answer has been a resounding "no".

  13. IrishDawg42 Legend Manager Browns Buckeyes Fighting Irish

Well, I would "HOPE" they would have more patience with a guy that has a proven record, than they have been with the 5 coaches in the Haslem erea with ZERO HC experience.

If history tells us anything, it's to learn from your mistakes. At this rate, we may not get any semblance of continuity before I reach Lyman's age.

BECAUSE of Haslem's short leash mentality, I believe our only hope is with a coach that has a bucket full of experience...The best available with that lineage imho is Mike McCarthy.

    • Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot reports Bills OC Brian Daboll will interview for the Browns head coach vacancy Sunday in Buffalo.
The Browns are being linked to pretty much every available head coach at this point. Still, Daboll deserves credit for meshing the Bills' offense around the talents of Josh Allen.

    • NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Patriots OC Josh McDaniels will conduct his interviews next Friday, January 10.
McDaniels has interview requests from the Panthers, Browns and Giants. Rapoport added that he's considered a top candidate for these roles.

Maybe we should just hire Mel Kiper and Todd McShay. They've had plenty of experience working in tandem.

  20. TopDawg Legend

My guess is the our next HC will be Josh McDaniels, and I'd be okay with that hire...

A real dark horse candidate, that might actually be the best case scenario for Baker Mayfield, is Urban Meyer....I've heard rumors of mutual interest between Haslam and Meyer, but nothing more than that.
