Browns want to interview Josh McDaniels

The Browns have shown Freddie Kitchens the door after one season as the team’s head coach and there’s word about one of the candidates they’d like to speak to about replacing him.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Browns have requested permission to interview Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. That is a change from last year when the Browns did not speak to McDaniels, who reportedly had some interest in the job, before hiring Kitchens.

McDaniels is reportedly a fan of Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield, who visited with the Patriots before being drafted first overall in 2018. Mayfield’s agent said there was talk of New England trading up to take his client if he didn’t go first overall and McDaniels’s fondness for the quarterback was believed to be a big factor in their interest.

Schefter adds that the Panthers are also expected to request permission to interview McDaniels. McDaniels can’t interview with any teams this week, but could interview next week whether the Patriots win or lose their Wild Card round game against the Titans.

McDaniels went 11-17 as the head coach of the Broncos before being fired 12 games into the 2010 season. He agreed to become the Colts head coach in 2018 before backing out of the deal after the Patriots played in Super Bowl LII.

If I'm Jerry Jones, I also am interested in interviewing McDaniels.

This move is basically painting a house even though the foundation is rotten. Most of the front office has been in place for 20 years, the same problems have been popping up over and over again so we paint the house as the walls keep falling down. Welcome to the New York Giants where continuity matters more than winning.

Ouch... Giants have requested to interview him and apparently they have been informed he is not interested if Gettleman is the GM.

McDaniels isnt even looking that attractive anymore.

Honestly he wasn't even on my radar. I sort of figured after walking out on the Colts he was staying with the Pats until he got to take over.

But this isn't the first rumor I have heard that coaches may opt out of the giants simply because Gettleman is in charge. Ownership came out and said he is our GM but the beats keep doing a lot of hedging with ifs and buts right now. The owners are apparently in disagreement on Gettleman and hinted that structural changes may be coming even though Gettleman is staying as the GM. It's all very strange in the Meadowlands today.

McDaniels is from the Cleveland area but Im not sure why teams are still interested after what he pulled in Indy.

Exactly. People are psychotic if they want McDaniels. He's an absolute failure of a head coach who still has the ego thinking he will just write his paycheck wherever he wants. Why would any team that wants to build a quality and stable organization take him?

The first couple of names linked to the Browns’ head coaching search came from the offensive side of the ball, but the team isn’t ignoring defensive candidates to replace Freddie Kitchens.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the team has requested an interview with 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh. Saleh can interview this week as the 49ers have a bye through the first round of the NFC playoffs.

Saleh oversaw a unit that finished 2nd in the league in yards allowed and eighth in points allowed. They were tied for fifth in the league with 48 sacks and sixth with 27 turnovers.

This was Saleh’s third season running the defense for the 49ers. He has also coached in Jacksonville, Seattle and Houston.

The Browns have also requested interviews with Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman.

Stack that on what he did in Denver and you have a really questionable candidate.

Don't see that happening. Belichick is grooming his son for that job.

The Dolphins won’t be making a head coaching change this offseason, but they are going to be looking for a new offensive coordinator.

According to multiple reports, the Dolphins have fired Chad O’Shea. O’Shea joined the staff last year and worked with head coach Brian Flores in New England before coming to Miami.

The Dolphins were 25th in points scored and dead last in the league in rushing during the 2019 season. Their passing numbers were stronger, but it seems Flores wanted to move in a different direction for his second season.

Whether Ryan Fitzpatrick returns or not, that second season may include the acquisition of a rookie quarterback in the first round of this year’s draft. If so, the top priority for whoever replaces O’Shea will be clear.

There are also multiple reports that the Dolphins are moving on from offensive line coach Dave DeGuglielmo and defensive backs coach Tony Oden.

I like that Flores and Grier recognize the issues on offense and are being proactive about fixing them.

There needs to be a focus on adding talent on the OL and reshaping the ground game.

It probably doesn't help that Miami traded away their best OL and RB...

Cowboys defensive passing game coordinator Kris Richard had three interviews for head coaching jobs a year ago. He has at least one scheduled in this hiring cycle.

Josina Anderson of ESPN reports that Richard will interview for the Giants’ head coaching position on Thursday.

Richard interviewed with the Jets, Dolphins and Buccaneers last January. He nearly got the job in Miami that went to Brian Flores instead.

The Cowboys, with Richard calling the plays, were a disappointment on defense. They finished ninth in total defense and 11th in points allowed.

Richard, 41, served as the Seahawks’ defensive coordinator for three seasons before Pete Carroll fired him after the 2017 season. He has spent the past two seasons in Dallas.

They traded away their best DB as well.

Based on the product down the stretch, I don’t have an issue with how they reshaped the locker room towards what Flores/Grier have in mind.

The problem is these were all young players and they were good players. The picks they got in the trades aren't going to replace them. The only thing they are going to do is possibly give them what they need to trade up and get the QB from LSU.

I don't disagree. I meant more with the firing of their OC - if I was O'Shea, I'd be pretty pissed that they took away my tools and fired me for not doing a good job. But I'm sure the firing was about more than just where the offense finished statistically. That said, they overachieved given the personnel, so...

Rumors are swirling Zach Ertz has a lacerated liver and will miss the playoff game. Other reports are saying he will be monitored this week to see if he can play. At this rate, the Eagles are pulling fans off of Broad Street to play WR.

I agree that you're gonna be hard pressed drafting replacements for a franchise LT, a game breaking RB, and a versatile playmaking DB with years left on his rookie deal. But I think the goal was to remake the roster with different priorities / timelines. Sure, you've got a great LT - but how much will you be paying him and will he still be that good by the time you've found your franchise QB?

It's not the way I'd do things, but I understand it, and they're not the first. From the guy whose team is wasting an elite defense (see: Khalil Mack) because they got the QB wrong, I understand it.
