Imagine a line with Mcdavid, Mcmichael and another guy named McAndrew lol, all named Connor of course.
Here's a question, what would you nickname the line? Keep in mind it's 2019, what would be considered politically correct? Would this cross into racial boundaries? Is there such a thing as racism toward Irish heritage?
good question, i dont think so. the Fighting Irish doesnt seem to ruffle any feathers. i wear my Irish heritage with pride and have fun with any and all stereotypes associated with it.
The obvious nickname would be the McLine, this was a racial slur 100 years ago. The Bs had the Kraut line in the 40s and I doubt that would fly now. I don't think Burke or O'Neil would be offended if you called it that.
HELL YES! I wear my Irish heritage with pride too. Almost every person with Irish blood does because we have a history of standing up to the bully. A common foe, and a record of accomplishment against them will always be contorted into national glory. I think the Univ. of North Dakota's change to Fighting Hawks illustrates the problem with pc-ness run to excess. The majority of Sioux were pleased and honored to be memorialized by UND. But, that name, it just wouldn't do for some that feel empowered to speak for all. The Irish outnumber the Sioux by a huge magnitude, and won't/cannot be so easily cowed. Likewise, the Chicago Blackhawks have third-city masses in support; that name stands for now. No, I do not assign disparagement to any reference to a specific group. Especially if that group is the Irish, all attention is flattering.
Obviously, bigotry exists, and is a scourge. However, simply appealing to heritage is not always bigoted. It can reflect esteem. I hate that society is losing the capacity to discern the proper application of ways to describe our distinctions.
Would it still be ok if the fans threw empty bottles of Irish whiskey and green boxing gloves after they had a good game? The biggest offenders of irish bigotry were orange irishmen themselves. You couldn't even work in a bank in Toronto if you weren't orange in the 50s.
Actions that clearly pose a safety risk to others crosses any reasonable line for acceptibility. Fuck the orange! The Irish have prevailed despite them. Fuck them and the lorry the ride in on. The Orange were not, historically, Irish. They were transplanted (mostly from Scotland) in a British scheme to subjugate the Irish. If you can't beat them, overwhelm them in number. That scheme ultimately faltered, and because of Brexit, it could develop into outright failure.
So true, they were sent there to spread Henry the V111s new church of England and a lot of them then ended up in the Applachian region. *Plastic whiskey bottles.
The Scots had no great love for the Brits either. Originally, they were granted 99-year leases to the property in (pimarily) Ulster. When the leases expired, London expected them to happily pay to own. They collectively said "fuck the Brits", and were off to the hollers. Plastic whiskey bottles? That's not real whiskey. People that drink out of plastic whiskey containers do not deserve further consideration.
Plastic must be a Canadian thing, it's aimed for the under 30 crowd that carry them to parties. The family homeowner buys the glass bottle and stores it in the liquor cabinet.
Yes, obviously the majority of people of irish descent wouldn't give a damn. Being 2019, I'm just wondering if the nhl would cuck down to the vocal minority special interest groups as we usually see happening now, my guess is yes.
sure they will. They'll do that as long as they listen to the"squeaky wheel" that claims that innocuous words & opinions are somehow wrong. My points ultimate represent a plea for people to speak out against this censorship and intolerant behavior.
