Every team has their own aproach on how they'll spend their cap money. You could give most of it to a handful or you could spread it out and have more balance with less stars. Both have been proven to be successful. The only advantage the leafs have over some teams is upfront money, where they make it a tradeable asset.
Are they? What good are they when they're primed to throw away 35-40 pts because the backup goalie? If Dubas fought it out more during his contract talks with Marner and Nylander, they would've had some extra money to sign a $2M backup. Right now they have to scramble to find someone at the league minimum to play 22 games? This means that Freddy has to practically be perfect for all 60 games he plays, impossible.
