  1. Lyman "Franchise Asshole" Browns Buckeyes

Here's my way too early Post-Mortem on the Browns' 2019 season. (continued)

    Freddie Kitchens:

There was a sequence in the Seahawks game that pretty well sums up Goober's performance as a Head Coach. Setting the stage:
    • About 1 minute, 40 seconds remaining in the 2nd quarter.
    • The Seahawks had just scored 9 unanswered points cutting the Browns lead to 20-12.
    • The Browns have the ball 1st and 10 on Seattle's 12 yard line with all 3 time outs available.
    • The Browns' running game had been effective all game (Chubb ended up with 124 yards rushing).
So, what does Freddie call? A pass play where Mayfield launches an Exorcet missile at a wide receiver that comes in too hot, bounces off the receiver's hands and gets intercepted by Seattle. The Seahawks promptly march 80 yards for a TD (missed the extra point) and instead of going into the half with a 23-12 lead, more likely a 27-12 lead, it's now 20-18 and Seattle receives the 2nd half kickoff.

When asked in a post game presser why he didn't just run the ball, eat the remaining time off the clock and go into the half with a two possession lead, Freddie answered,

"I thought we could score quickly, use our 3 time outs on defense, get the ball back and score again."

Really? Russell Wilson owned the Browns' defense in the 2nd quarter. The Browns lost by 4 points.

Since posting that ^^^^^, I realized something else about that sequence of events. When the Browns had the ball 1st and 10 on Seattle's 12 yard line, Freddie went to the hurry up offense and snapped the ball with 22 seconds left on the play clock. Seattle intercepted the ball, marched directly down the field and scored . . . With 22 seconds remaining on the game clock.

I remember suggesting Matt Moore as the bridge quarterback for a team that went with a different option.

Only one guy agreed with me.

That guy looks pretty smart right about now.

I always liked Matt Moore. Started with Dallas, and I hoped they would have held onto him to be Romo's backup, but they tried to sneak him through waivers after he had a good camp, and Carolina claimed him.

It was a surprisingly entertaining game. I wasn't a big fan of Murray during draft season. He's beginning to change my mind.

He definitely looks like a QB who can develop into something pretty nice over time.

Think the Cards need to find a way to get Andy Isabella on the field more.

Since 1960, 17 QB’s have started their first game against the Buffalo Bills. Joe Namath, Drew Bledsoe, and Ryan Leaf are 3 of those 17.

The Bills record against these NFL newbies is 17-0.

Dwayne Haskins of the Redskins will get his first NFL start on Sunday vs. the Bills.

We do not need this trivia to make an informed projection for the outcome of this game.

Without knowing this important tidbit, I picked Buffalo anyway in my office pool. It would be really nice to win 2 weeks in a row.

    D. K. Metcalf

Why wasn't that obvious for every NFL GM? lol!

Because statistics don’t always reflect the on field reality.

Metcalf is still the exact same player. Having Lockett on the other side provides him the opportunity to run a limited route tree and get cleaner looks against the defenses #2 CB.

There was never any question about his ability to make contested catches. The questions (speaking strictly for myself) revolved around his ability to gain separation consistently.

What you’re seeing out of Metcalf right now is what he most likely will be his entire career. Big plays in moments and some big games mixed in with weeks where he’s closer to being invisible.

Metcalf's success this season was reliant on Lockett being a #1.
