Yeah, I know, heat of the moment and pissed about this shit show today. But against a mediocre offense today: zero pass rush, dominated at the LOS unlike anything I've seen in the last two years. They lost the battle at the LOS every fucking play today!!! Literally. Terrible tackling. Terrible coverage. Zero heart, the exact opposite of last week. Even more damning: in 5 games we have allowed SIX 90+ yard drives for a TD, 4 of those coming in the 4th quarter! We're it not for a gift roughing the passer call in week 2, that 90+ yard drive would have been the difference between winning and losing, as it was today. The defense should swim home today. Fuck them.
Sooooo...... They’re not going to pitch a perfect game for 16 weeks. Every top defense has a bad game, the difference between good and bad teams is that a good team’s offense wins it by picking up the slack, which they did for a quarter and some change. Nagy cleaned up the 2nd half which was nice, but Chase Daniel is what he is: a back up. Even amid a shit performance, the game was winnable until Chase made a terrible read and a worse throw at the end. The one thing that bothered me was Akeim Hicks playing on a bum knee now this elbow/arm injury could be costly. If it were up to me, he’d have rested until New Orleans after the bye. Instead now we have a conversation about whether or not he done for the year.
The D has failed to close out 2 games this year. And again we got lucky in Denver with that roughing penalty. They've got to clamp down in the 4th quarter. We talked about improving in this area all of last season and guess what happened in the playoffs? They allowed the go ahead TD drive in the final 2 minutes of the game. One thing about Lovie era defenses is they were consistent in-game, for better or worse. If they started out badly, they finished badly. If they started strong, they finished strong and were better than this era's D at closing out games. Multiple games from 05, 06, 10 are examples of the D making a play to close out a win. This D has to get better at closing.
What year was that game against the Falcons when Orton drove the ball down the field and hit the Smurf with a TD pass to take the lead and left 11 seconds on the clock, and the Bears lost when they couldn't protect the sideline and keep Jenkins from going out of bounds?
Ha, yeah that was one game where they failed. I think that was 08. But didn't Lovie either kick out of bounds or pooch kick that to set them up to be 1 pass within FG range?
Yep a squib kick. I think the pass was to Jenkins and they couldn't keep him from going out of bounds.
Miscommunication in my opinion but I don’t know who was wrong. Even if Miller runs the route Daniel thought he was running that’s not a good throw.
The problem is the defense is constantly gassed by the 4th quarter because the offense sucks ass and can’t sustain drives consistently. 35 to 25 minutes TOP difference yesterday. That is not getting it done.
to be fair though plenty of that blame goes to the D. The Raiders marched the length of the field on the opening drive, and many, many more drives. They weren’t gassed on the first drive, or the second, unless you count the jet lag (which to me is a valid excuse, but a self inflicted one)
Yeah they just got beat up at the line. There were plays were Bear defenders were being pushed back 3 yards off the ball.
If it comes down to relying on your backup QB to win a game at the end against a bumass team like the Raiders then you know a lot of guys have fucked up along the way. Chase put in the kind of performance i think we all felt he had in him and we all feared. He played like a backup QB. He is a backup QB. It should never have come to that. The Defense got straight up stomped. 0 INTs, 0 sacks, 1 QB Hit, 0 TFL's, 25 First Downs, 400 yards of Offense of which 130 came in the 1st Quarter(kinda puts a hole in the 4thQ gassed theory). Exactly. But we shouldn't forget they had their share of luck in this game. First possession a stupid penalty that took the Raiders out of FG range. The first fumble recovery was basically a pass to our D from Carr. Other than McManis it was Raiders mistakes that kept this game close. Against a good team this would've been a total blowout.
No question about it. But you can see as the games go on, there’s definitely a fatigue factor that sets in. And I’m not just talking about yesterday.
