Or he could be a dumpster fire. We are talking about a guy that was completing 59% of his passes last go around and that was 3 years ago.

But again....that isn’t the point I’m trying to make.

Either you’re an idiot or you are purposely ignoring my words.

Signing a backup today doesn’t equals wins today. That was the only point I was trying to make.

  2. steelersking M.V.P. Steelers

Of course not, if they guaranteed a win they wouldn’t be backups. They are not, they are all contingencies that we hopefully do not see. Unless of course they are playing other positions like Hill for the Saints. But they are all 1 play from being thrust into the game.

The place you lost me is saying Foles wasn’t a backup when he led the Eagles to the Super Bowl. Wentz was the starter, got injured, backup Foles enters the lineup and led the Eagles to the Super Bowl. Now if you’re argument was purely signing a backup off the street after a QB after an injury, I guess I can understand that a little better. Bringing someone in that hasn’t been with the team all season would have a limited knowledge of the playbook, which limits an offense.

    I don’t intend to.

Here’s a question....let’s say the Cleveland Browns sign a backup QB today. Baker Mayfield is their starter. He’s healthy.

How does signing that backup lead to a win on Sunday if Mayfield is healthy and the starter?

No ifs or buts...because we know what the ifs are already. Taking only what you know right now...that Mayfield is the starter and he’s healthy....answer the question.

  5. BearsWillWin Drunk (Probably) Patreon Champion Manager Bears Blackhawks Cubs

He wasn’t a backup that day. He was a former backup forced to be starter via injury.

And yes the end of your second paragraph is much more of what I’m aiming at.

Any team looking for wins today isn’t gonna find them on the unemployed QB pile.

Freddie Kitchens not considering giving up play-calling

Freddie Kitchens came out of Sunday night's loss to the Rams second-guessing his play calls. He's not here for those suggesting he shouldn't be the Browns' play-caller.

"You can write that if you want to. But that's not even feasible," Kitchens told reporters Monday. "That's not even, that's not being considered. No, it's not."

It likely crossed the minds of many upon seeing Cleveland run a draw on fourth-and-nine while trailing by four points in the fourth quarter. The play went for two yards and gave the Rams a short field to set up a field goal. The Browns still had a chance to either tie or go ahead late in the game, advancing to L.A.'s 4-yard-line in the final minute. But four consecutive pass plays, none of which went to Odell Beckham, resulted in three incompletions and a game-clinching interception.

Kitchens admitted he's still feeling his way out with his current personnel.

"When you start talking about specifics like that, I just know how the guys around me are," Kitchens said. "I think you take the sense of, you get a better feel for what people can do and what people can't do. Or the better situations that they can be in in relation to the situation that you're putting them in currently. And that's what you do. You do your work during the course of the week and you call it on Sunday. If they do things differently, you make adjustments accordingly. I think we've been doing a good job of that. Now it just needs to get more consistent."

Kitchens, of course, was tabbed as the head coach in January on the strength of his stint as the interim offensive coordinator and play-caller under Gregg Williams for the final eight games of 2018. It marked his first chance as an OC after 13 years in the NFL, nearly all of which was spent with the Arizona Cardinals. Baker Mayfield set the NFL rookie record for touchdown passes and the Browns closed out the season 5-3, with all three defeats coming to division winners.

But after three unremarkable offensive showings to open the 2019 campaign -- Cleveland (1-2) is averaging 16.3 points per game -- Kitchens' credentials have come into question. In a presser that spanned more than 27 minutes, the first-year head coach was asked in various ways about the possibility of veteran offensive coordinator Todd Monken taking over play-calling. Monken was the Buccaneers' OC the past three years after a three-year term as the head coach of Southern Miss.

Kitchens refuted the notion that being the head coach and making the offensive calls were too much to juggle and he therefore might need to call upon Monken.

"Not going to happen," Kitchens said. "It's me. It's my fault. Todd does a great job. Todd does a great job during the course of the week of making sure we stay on task. We stay organized and all that kind of stuff. But when things mess up it's going to be me."

All it took for the 2019 Bears defense to look like the version that led the league in points allowed and interceptions a season ago was a meeting with the Washington Redskins.

Case Keenum was intercepted three times by the Bears and fumbled three times, losing two, as Chicago’s defense smothered Washington’s offense in a 31-15 victory on Monday night.

Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix returned one of his two interceptions of Keenum for a 37-yard touchdown to give the Bears the early 7-0 lead. Kyle Fuller also intercepted his second pass of the season after leading the league in the category last years with seven interceptions.

Star pass rusher Khalil Mack added two sacks and two forced fumbles. He had another strip-sack negated by an illegal use of hands on defensive back Prince Amukamara.

Taylor Gabriel caught three touchdown passes from Mitchell Trubisky before leaving the game in the second half with a concussion. Gabriel scored on passes of 3, 1 and 36 yards as the Bears built a 28-3 halftime lead over Washington. Trubisky hadn’t thrown a touchdown pass through the first two games of the year, but completed 25 of 31 passes for 231 yards and three touchdowns against Washington. He was intercepted once by Josh Norman as well.

Keenum was the Washington offense would find some footing and rally enough to put the result briefly in question. Keenum connected with Terry McLaurin for a 15-yard touchdown, the third in as many games for the rookie, and Paul Richardson for a 2-yard touchdown to close the gap to 28-15 after a pair of failed two-point conversions with 13:11 remaining.

Keenum completed 30 of 43 passes for 331 yards, but was responsible for five turnovers on the night.

Washington again drove deep into Bears’ territory before Danny Trevathan punched the ball free of Keenum’s grasp as he tried to leap over the line of scrimmage on a quarterback sneak on a fourth-and-1 at the Chicago 16-yard line. A five-minute drive that resulted in a 38-yard Eddy Pineiro field goal made it a 31-15 final margin.

Good thing Keenum was an idiot because Washington looked like they were gonna get the comeback win.

That's a big road win for the Eagles who are now 2-2... the Packers fall to, 3-1

    Congrats to the Eagles.

Packers are idiots though. 1st and goal from the 1 and you pass 4 times. A Rod or not, you gotta run a couple of times.

Prime example of a new head coach trying to appease his star quarterback.

Eagles were stuffing the run at that time and were having a ton of trouble stopping the pass.

Agreed, but I still like the odds of stacking it with the fullback and trying to power run on the opening down, following that with play-action on second before going spread on the final two.

Green Bay tipped their hand and let the Eagles have a chance to be one dimensional on defense.

Also, at the end of the game, I hate running that quick slant at the goal line into a packed secondary. It's a low percentage play that forces the receiver to beat the immediate defender and survive the hit from the incoming tackler.

Pass plays I would try to avoid in that area -
    The quick slant
    The quick out
    Goal line curl

Pass plays I would prefer in that area
Crossing routes (player from both sides running across)
Back of the end zone cross
    The fade
    Running back swing
Tight end corner (wide receiver on same side runs the slant or skinny post)

  17. BearsWillWin Drunk (Probably) Patreon Champion Manager Bears Blackhawks Cubs

Davante Adams standing on the sideline did them no favors.

Agree on the slant...hate that playcall.

When inside the five I would run almost all my passing plays with a rub or natural pick. The odds of getting a flag are so low because of the proximity to the line of scrimmage.

I find it interesting how many people agree with you on this aspect of goal line passing. I have a different school of thought on it, but I also understand the underlying reasoning so it's a difference in opinion based more on personal preference than anything else.

Related to this - I remember reading after the Super bowl loss that the Seahawks had a 100% success rate with that quick slant off of the rub before that resulted in a pick to end the game. So while they had a play with a solid track record that they felt strongly about, enough to take the ball out of Lynch's hand on the goal line, it was probably false confidence based on two things:

    1. It requires too many moving parts to come together in a critical situation and it relies on the defense to react exactly how you expect them to.

    2. Because it was such a high percentage play there is no question that the Patriots would have came into that game prepared for it, and they said as much after the win.

Yeah, Bill & the Pats read that play. As shocked as we were when Seattle did not have the ball to Lynch, the more surprising fact is that Butler was in on a clear "running" play. My opinion of the Pats HC shot up that day.

He may have been the only person not surprised by that play.

i still think Butler makes contact before the pass reaches them and by hitting the seattle player a little out of the way, he made the game saving INT. Dan, you're 100000000% right. He seemed like he knew the play all along and made damn sure he was getting that ball and pass.
