1) The Chicago Sports media absolutely torched him this week. And sadly, it was fully warranted. He has clearly has regressed. With that, on one sports show they asked callers (and experts) to call in and give them their thoughts on his ceiling. The highest I heard was a poor man's Alex Smith. My thought, based on what I've seen so far this year, is we'd be lucky for him to hit that level. Right now, he's playing like a poor mans Craig Krenzel. 2) Mitch was sacked 24 times last year. He's already been sacked 5 times this year. The thing is (and I have to be objective here), his Oline is not helping him at all this year. And to add to this thought, I objectively think our best Olineman this year has been.... Bobbie Massie. Stew on that for a minute. 3) Mitch's stats are far worse than the guy who replaced Andrew Luck. The thought here is, I didn't even know who was starting for the Colts.... 4) Mitch was a pro-bowler last year. What does that tell you about the pro-bowl selection process? 5) Mitch was a complete disaster through his first 3 games last year as well. And then he had a 350 yard 6 TD game against a disaster of a D (TB). The Redskins D (especially their pass D) is a disaster. His season then turned around and he put up some OK numbers for the rest of the season. 6) As bad as Mitch played in week 1 (it was a fucking disaster) he had a chance to tie/win the game on the last drive. He threw (floated) a really bad pass into bracket coverage, when we had open receivers underneath, on a really shitty play call. And, if I remember correctly, it was our 30th pass play in a row.... But, we could have won. Last week, we did win. He played "better". Now, the improvement was marginal at best, it's clear he made better decisions. The thought: Is not getting Mitch reps in pre-season to the tune of losing to the Packers in week 1 worth it? 7) Mitch has about 5700 yards so far in his career. Mahomes had 5100 last year alone... The thought here? Google Sam Bowie. 8) Currently, Trubisky is 33 or worse in most QB stats. Sadly, there are only 32 teams in the NFL 9) I was very critical of Mahomes in college for being a strong armed QB with poor mechanics. Some (even some here) noted that we had a strong armed QB with bad mechanics and that didn't work out.... Except, Mahomes' arm is not only >>>> Cutlers (he threw a 65 yard bomb from a kneeling position), he was also just 21 and open to coaching. The one thing Cutler was not open to? coaching. So what does this have to do with Mitch? Well.... His mechanics are fucking deplorable. And unfortunately, his arm is pretty middle tier. 10) I love a dominating Defense. And I love a strong running game. I am old school and appreciate the art of a true battle on the field. It's relatively clear that if Mack stays with the Bears for another 6-8 years, we will be lumping him in with Dent, McMichael (god damn Mongo deserves to be in the HOF) and Atkins as a pass rusher. But in today's NFL, to win a SB, you need a QB. You nee to balance the team. Solid D, Solid O. Of the following names, which QB's do you feel is least likely to get a team there: Watson, Mahomes, Goff, Wentz, Mayfield Trubisky, Darnold, Allen?
The interior OL has been touched on with Daniels and Whitehair. Long has had a couple stupid penalties. But I'm glad you pointed this out, because I think Charles Leno has play like shit in games 1 and 2 but got to fly under the radar with the interior OL dysfunction. Thinking beyond this season, bears wont have cap flexibility come offseasons--minus what to do with Mitch. Mack's salary/cap hit goes way up, Kyle Fuller's "poison pills" year is next year (then again in 2021)--a 17.5 mil cap hit per Sportrac, up from 8.5 mil year 1 and 13 mil last year. You'll be on Leonard Floyd's 5th/contract year--and he needs to be kept. There are going to be cut candidates to save cap/be flexible, especially if bears fall short of expectations. *Waves* I'm one of the guys who noted we had a strong arm QB with bad mechanics that didn't work out before Mahomes. I also really wanted Watson. So first, there's NO predicting this shit. My argument is fans were so fatigued after years of disappointment of "a gunslinger" that Mahomes doing shitwad things in a bears uni would give everybody PTSD. How fatigued? Some on this board were singing the praises of Brian Hoyer and Matt Barklay in marvelous, bum-slaying performances. Hell some even opined for Kyle Orton to come back when that Shitwad guy is the best quarterback in this franchise's history, better than the three guys just referenced. Mahomes threw the ball a lot under somehow-an-NFL-coach Kliff Kingsbury at Texas Tech, coming with double digit INTs (15 in 2015 and 10 in 2016), so just over 1 per game in 15 and just under 1 per game in 2016. Dude made mistakes even as a gunslinger even among improvement. Second, context. I'm not going to argue Jay was uncoachable. Its well reported he was. Its well reported he knew he had the arm but didn't want to learn how to read changing secondaries meant to confuse QBs and force them into decisions. Jay was who Jay was and we got plenty of good with the oft comically bad, crippling, stupid INT. It gives me a headache because its a "what if" and as I've gotten older--I hate these: but what does Patrick Mahomes look like under John Fox and Frodo for a year before a branch of the Andy Reid tree who is stubborn and has gross lapses in cohesiveness/balanced offense look like? What if Patrick Mahomes wasn't put in the comfy position of sitting behind Alex Smith learning from the same coach who can scheme almost anybody and be successful with Tyreek Hill, Kelce, and seemingly whoever shows up? Is he still the same guy putting up video game stupid numbers? More importantly (and I fully acknowledge this is a stretch because the league in early 2010s and now are becoming very different,) what does Patrick Mahomes look like under Mike Martz, Mike Tice, Trestman/Aaron Kromer, Turner, Gase/Frodo over a 7-8 year stretch? ^That's academic at this point. Right now, if Mitch continues to be the mix of Blake Bortles and bad Rex, what's the plan? Chase Daniel is on his last year of his 2 year deal. We've already seen what he's not. Tyler Bray is a guy I know Nagy likes, but no way is this kid something. I posted in another thread, you have 2 2nd rounders next April, are you using 1 on a QB? Are you trading up to the end of the 1st to get a guy who falls? Buying one doesn't seem to be an option unless we see a big cut/salary dump somewhere. 25+ mil for average QBs also doesn't entice me, especially when you're going to have to guarantee a lot of that dough.
The Redskins have a grand total of 1 sack thru 2 games and one of the worst pass D's in the league. I know Mitch wets himself whenever he's in primetime, but still, the OL needs to do their damn jobs and Mitch needs to put up some real numbers. If he can't against this opponent im hitting the panic button. Ok that made me laugh.
Teams are playing him differently so far and each team will face will look at what the Packers and Broncos did and try to replicate it until Mitch can prove he can throw from the pocket. Teams are forcing him to play QB....and he's failing.
We look even worse than the Blazers because we traded up and then fucked up whereas they just fucked up where they were. We're going to be lamenting this for decades. The conversation at the end of this season will be do we trade Mitch for a 4th rounder and focus on picking a 2nd round QB in 2020 (at risk of wasting this defense)? Or do we keep Mitch one more season, tank next year, and hope to get a high QB pick in 2021 (defense's window might be closed by then)?
Truth be told, I don't really see a solution right now. We're going to have to let this season play out. And while we pretty much know what we have with Turdisky, we will just have to hope a miracle happens (and if it doesn't we'll just continue to bitch about it.) With that, if by the end of this season, he's playing like he is now, we're going to hav to raft a QB early in the draft nxt year. Turdisky will be 3 full years into his rookie contract and I have no issues with him sitting on the bench next year behind our top draft pick. Shit, just remembered we traded our first roun pick away for Mack. Ok, so we're fucked next year as well...
Not if we find a QB in the second or third round who can compete with Mitch for the job in preseason. Or we trade Mitch outright as the Cardinals did Rosen. We're only fucked next year if Pace/Nagy double down on Mitch as the guy or they make a conscious effort to tank for a QB in 2021. The other option is to sign a journeyman veteran but that would likely doom us to no better than 8-8 and taking us out of the running for a high draft pick in 2021.
Not necessarily. The reality is you got 2 2nds, meaning we gotta root for the Raiders to lose for the higher pick. College football is still young, and nontraditional guys still aren't known so 3 Qbs are speculated 1st rounders for those unacquainted with college. Two are top 10 projected, the other late 1st. In the event the raiders give you an early 2nd, you have ammo with the bears' 2nd to move back to the end of the 1st. The benefit to that is 1st rounders have a 5th year option, everybody else beyond doesn't. This opens the can of worms of do we trust Pace to get the "projected" third guy? I'm all in on competition for Mitch regardless, shaking things up. I'd keep Chase Daniel for the right price, but I'm not breaking the bank on him. Stupid money is flying around for quarterbacks these days, and Daniel isn't a necessity. I don't know if Pace agrees with that..... Elephant in the room time, do we trust Pace to spin the wheel at QB again? Guys can have success early, look at this rookie Gardner Minshew for Jax, he's a 6th round pick. The offensive weaponry Pace has put together should be on par with the Chiefs, but the difference in QB is obvious. Call me a meatball all you want, but this Montgomery kid looks like he could be special, and a capable--not even needing to be elite--QB unlocks that. Till then, he's going to get defenses stacking against them until, as BWW points out Mitch can beat opposing defenses from the pocket. I'm all for drafting one or two guys. I don't want to buy anybody unless is reasonable, and that doesn't seem likely for a decent vet. 10 mil a year for a back up vet is a horrendous deal even with the cap creeping up bit by bit per year.
In all honesty, I was OK with him taking any of the 3 (Watson, Turdisky, or Mahomes). I obviously liked Mahomes over the other 2 but felt all 3 could make it in the NFL. The only QB I was completely opposed to was Kizer. So, does it look like he made a mistake? Sure. Especially considering he threw away so many picks to move up to do so. But, he had to go for it if he felt he was his QB The one thing I question is when he spent so much more time right before the draft with Mahomes, what DIDN'T he see from Mahomes that he apparently did see in his short time with Turdisky? So, unless I get to know that (which I won't) I do not trust him to draft our next QB. He had his shot. He built this team to win now. When you give up as many low picks as we have for a QB and a LB, you need to win. . He (it looks like) did great at almost every position in building this team except for QB - he failed. bye bye Pace.
One big factor in not choosing Mahomes was the offensive coaching staff at the time. We all know that Pace was basically on his own when he went all in on Trubisky. Fox and friends were just along for the ride. One of the reasons I felt Fox should have been fired a year earlier. Now I know Nagy wasn’t a logical choice a year earlier. He needed his last season in KC for his resume before he became a strong HC candidate. My hope is IF Pace does get another shot at a QB Nagy will have a big influence on who they take. You said if your going to give up all those picks for a QB and LB you have to win. Well they won 12 games and a division last season. Trubisky will rebound. How much is the question. I think we all see that Mitch as a below average QB but with this defense we still get a winning record. Does Nagy have enough influence to convince Pace we need to continue the search for THE GUY at QB. That is the big question for me.
True, and I'm not going tget negative on the season. It was fun. I do feel that the turnovers our D gave us and the D in general were a much much bigger factor in winning 12 games last season than the QB.
I feel like this D has the potential to be even better. They just haven't been generating the turnovers. Yet.
I think the D can be better this year as well. The D hasn't been a problem this year. If the offense was even "ok" we would be 2-0. The O is just plain awful so far. Maybe we see a little more from them tonight. Hell maybe this is just a sign of not gelling yet because they didn't play at all in the preseason. I was on board with them not playing starters to prevent injury. Maybe I was wrong.
A separate thought, doesn’t require a new thread. The Bradley Sowell experiment has ended. He’s been cut and Abdullah Anderson, DL promoted from PS. Abdullah has a decent few moments in preseason.
I might get eviscerated for this but I don't agree with this at all. Dix is a downgrade from Amos. Let's not even get in to the fact that Amos picked off Trubs in the endzone in week 1. Prince is another year older and has been flagged already too much. And let's not forget the biggest difference; Fangio > Pagano. If the statistics are better this year, I won't jump to the defense being better. I want to look at the competition played. I hope I'm wrong.
