Are you sure of this?! I do not recall that the Sabres every played the USSR. I could be proven wrong, but in the Bowman era the Sabres occupied virtually my entire attention span...

 

The Sabres didn't play the red army but I remember them playing Dynamo, they won in a high scoring match.
The red team I was referring to was the flyers.

 

Correction, Dynamo won 7-4 in 1986.
