Cornerback Mike Hughes is ready to resume working on the field. Hughes was placed on the physically unable to perform list at the start of training camp as he continued to work his way back from the torn ACL that ended his rookie season. That work paid off on Monday when he was activated from the PUP list and cleared to rejoin the team at practice. Hughes was a first-round pick last year and had 22 tackles, an interception and a forced fumble in six games. Hughes returned that interception for a touchdown in a season-opening win over the 49ers. Now that he’s back at practice, Hughes will try to find a spot in a cornerback group that is fronted by Xavier Rhodes and Trae Waynes. (PFT)
Having Mike Hughes back is a good thing just make sure he makes a full recovery cause so far Xavier Rhodes sucks
Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer said recently that the team’s reserve receivers needed to “get their rear ends going” ahead of the cut to 53 players this weekend. Jordan Taylor‘s rear end apparently didn’t respond as Zimmer was hoping. The Vikings announced Taylor’s release on Tuesday morning. Taylor signed with the Vikings in April after spending the last four years with the Broncos. He caught three passes for 24 yards during the preseason. His departure leaves Dillon Mitchell, Olabisi Johnson, Brandon Zylstra, Laquon Treadwell, Jeff Badet, Davion Davis, and Alexander Hollins looking for spots behind Stefon Diggs, Adam Thielen and Chad Beebe. The Vikings also announced that they’ve released cornerback Bene Benwikere. The move comes a day after the Vikings activated cornerback Mike Hughes from the physically unable to perform list. (PFT)
Capt Kirk is looking like an 84 million dollar mistake this guy is a NIGHTMARE yeah he has nice stats sometimes but he just can't get the job done,Tricky Ricky and qb situation first it was Ponder ( ugh ) then Bridgewater ( gave up on him to quick IMO ) Kirk Cousin just leaves me confused Zimmer and Tricky Ricky better git together
Honestly I believe we will see a better Cousins this season. He should have a running game and better chemistry with the receivers and a strong O-line. Lets see.
I just got back from the fair to much walking for me,but in this how are Vikings looking well fg is good gonna be tough to cut Dan Bailey
Wow what a heartbreaker, the Vikings ripped victory out of there hands and grabbed defeat Vikings 23 Bills 27 say it aint so,that defensive backfield was awful
I feel so bad for Vikings fans. I have no idea what in the world is wrong with Vedvik. The Ravens had him for 2 seasons, and he was so good that some people considered taking him over Tucker due to the cheaper contract. (More people considered him over Koch due to age and contract and versatility.) Still, he goes to the Vikings and suddenly can't kick out of a paper bag. It makes no sense.
What do you do about kicker now? If you cut the new guy you throw away your draft pick, If you cut Bailey maybe it cost you a game. Keep the new guy as a punter and hope he gets his kicking worked out.
Vedvik was really good when he was with the ravens. Maybe he is feeling some pressure because you traded for him. When he was with the Ravens there was no pressure because there was zero chance that he would replace Tucker. The best kicker ever.
It's like a bad hex or curse it's not Vedvik,Minnesota VIKINGS and kickers it's like oil and water( sigh will this curse ever end ever since the NFC Championship game against the FALCONS it's been rough going
After two seasons in Minnesota, guard Danny Isidora is heading home to Miami. The Vikings have traded Isidora to Miami for a seventh-round draft pick, the Dolphins announced. A 2017 fifth-round draft pick, Isidora grew up in Florida and played his college football at Miami. He’ll now add depth to the Dolphins’ offensive line. Isidora wasn’t expected to make the Vikings’ 53-man roster, but the Dolphins apparently didn’t think he’d make it through waivers to them, so they were willing to give up a pick to get him. In two years with the Vikings, Isidora played in 21 games with three starts.
The Vikings finished the 2019 preseason leading the NFL in rushing yards per game (168.3), and Mike Boone finished the preseason ranked second in the NFL with 196 yards. Oh, and Cook dazzled last week with an 85-yard touchdown run. Rookie fullback Khari Blasingame scored three touchdowns in four games, and veteran Ameer Abdullah averaged 8.8 yards per carry and scored on a 15-yard reception on Thursday night. _____________ ______________________________ There is a chance Minnesota keeps as many as 10 defensive linemen, which highlights the talent and depth within the unit. Linval Joseph and Shamar Stephen will be the starters at defensive tackle, although we haven’t seen much of them in the preseason. Joseph recently practiced for the first time this summer but noted he’s been hard at work and doesn’t necessarily need preseason action to be ready. Stephen, meanwhile, played 17 snaps in the third preseason game after working his way back from an injury to open training camp. The massive men in the middle last played together in 2017, when Minnesota ranked second by allowing just 83.6 yards per game on the ground. “Well, it’s good to have some more beef in there, and I felt like that’s what we need, is more size in the middle of the defense, take some of the pressure off some of the ends,” Zimmer said. “I think that part’s good. They’re still working their way in. Linval’s had a couple of good days, Shamar’s shown some good flashes. So, that helps.” If the pair again solidifies the interior of the d-line, defensive ends Danielle Hunter and Everson Griffen could present nightmares for opposing quarterbacks. Both defensive ends have looked impressive all summer. Hunter had a career-high 14.5 sacks in 2018, while Griffen had 5.5 despite missing five games for personal health reasons. If healthy, they could be among the most productive pass-rushing duos in the league. Stephen Weatherly played a crucial role in Griffen’s absence in 2018, and will be used in a variety of ways this season. That includes moving inside and standing up on third downs as a pass rusher. “He’s a really good athlete,” Zimmer said. “Played on his feet in college so he can do all those things that we’re asking him to do.” Those players could account for only half of the possible defensive linemen on the roster, as the Vikings have developed depth on the line thanks to the teachings of Vikings defensive line coach Andre Patterson. Jaleel Johnson and Jalyn Holmes started in place of Joseph and Stephen in the preseason, and both showed flashes. Fellow defensive tackle Hercules Mata’afa is more of a pass-rush specialist, as he showed up in spring practices and training camp. If Mata’afa makes the roster, Zimmer has suggested he’ll be used in specific situations. “He’ll probably just be in on the nickel. I want to see if he can just pass rush,” Zimmer said. “We’ll just kind of go from there, because I think that’s what his role will be this year, if that is his role. I got to find out if he can go in there and rush on third down.” Ifeadi Odenigbo spent part of the 2018 season on the Vikings practice squad but has shown great improvements this spring and summer. He could provide depth at defensive end and on special teams. “I think he’s really improved a lot as far as understanding the concepts that he has to do it at defensive end,” Zimmer said. “He’s a power player, really good physicality. He’s a guy that worked really, really hard last year when he was on the practice squad and this spring, and I think it’s starting to show.” According to NFL stats, defensive ends Anree Saint-Amour and Karter Schult each played all 58 defensive snaps Thursday. Defensive tackle Armon Watts, a sixth-round pick in the spring, played the next most snaps (28) among linemen.
By all indications, the Vikings will admit defeat regarding the use of a first-round pick in 2016 first-round pick on receiver Laquon Treadwell. And Treadwell is taking it all in stride. “I’m not worried about [being cut],” Treadwell said, via Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. “I have no worries. I’m like Lion King. Hakuna Matata. Honestly, I don’t. I just go out there and just continue to win. . . . Win my reps, win my one on ones, win on blocking. That’s about it.” He may not be winning a roster spot. But that doesn’t mean he won’t be winning a paycheck. Of his $1.8 million salary, $1.15 million of it is fully guaranteed. Even if he’s cut, if he’s not claimed on waivers, and if he doesn’t play at all this year, he gets that money. Of course, Treadwell could get claimed on waivers. One team to watch would be the Panthers, given that Norv Turner served as Minnesota’s offensive coordinator when Treadwell was drafted — and that Turner envisioned potentially making Treadwell into another Michael Irvin. Turner quit the Vikings during Treadwell’s rookie season. After having only one catch as a rookie, Treadwell has compiled a total of 56 career catches for 517 yards and a touchdown. And while the release of Treadwell will represent a squandered first-round pick by the Vikings, during the three years of Treadwell’s presence on the roster, Adam Thielen has developed into one of the best receivers in all of football — even though he was undrafted and uninvited to the Scouting Combine. The Vikings also found another of the league’s best receivers, Stefon Diggs, in the fifth round of the 2015 draft. (PFT)
