i saw them at the draft. lets see how their next few years plays out. i don't like betting on 14 yrs old for anything. they can't even mow the grass the right way. lol.

the thing is UMichigan is a higher level of play and the chance to play with his bro???? I suppose the spotlight would be red-hot for the Quinn boys and this is a way to avoid it.

Im kinda surprised that no one has gone the Auston Matthews route since and spent a year in Europe. Seems to have worked well for AM, maybe he was just in a unique position.

Also, D- Cam York (possible top 10 in '19) headed to BC. Havent layed eyes on his game yet but he certainly has the right last name.

 

Oliver Wahlstrom dropped to #11 in the draft (NYI); matriculated to play for the BC Matties.

Word is he could drop out of school, but his options are not attractive. Playing for USHL Tricity would be a step down from BC. His rights are owned by the QMJHL - and he doesn't want to play there. He's not ready for the AHL.

I could really use someone's help to 'splain this mess.

 

^^ sounds a little like Lindros not wanting to play for the 1 team and was sent to the Oshawa Generals. No idea how it all works Dan. The other guys im sure can help you.

The Bobrovsky signing is great news for BC hockey. Having spent so much money on Bob and draft collateral on Spencer Knight they’re going to want, need, to maximize his potential and monetary value. Makes me think they’ll want him to marinate in the NCAA as long as possible and as long as beneficial. Would think that they would not want to be using any/much of his ELC with him in the AHL. Let him grow and improve at BC while not being on the hook to pay him anything or start the ELC clock.
Of course the sticky situation is waiting too long and allowing him to hit unrestricted FA. That seems pretty far fetched though with this kid. I’m assuming he leaves after his sophomore or (hopefully) Junior season at the Heights. Anyway, as a BC fan I’m ecstatic how this situation has unfolded.

 

BC is definitely getting two years of this kid. Whether he spends year 3 in the AHL is dependent on the goalies between him and Bobrovsky, so we'll see. But he'll be there two years for sure.

I watched every move he made during Panthers development camp this past week / weekend. He is all kinds of impressive. The patience and instinct he showed were obvious, on top of his physical ability. I have to think he's going to shine at the college level.

He'll have Mike Ayers as his goalie coach at BC. Ayers was the former Development Program coach, real good guy and coach.
Knight has been a thoroughbred essentially his life. I heard about him his freshman year at Avon, essentially everyone knew this kid was NHL bound as long as he didnt get screwed up , injured, or take the wrong path. So far so good.

do you guys know what's going on with the Flyers draft Jay O'Brien? He was at one college, played for a club team in Canada and tried to switch colleges but the first college won't allow him to go there? Can someone explain this? thanks.

Essentially, he committed to Providence a few years ago, and found it to not be a good fit for him once he matriculated. Then he got walloped and could not really perform well. He's going to Penticton of the BCHL for a year and will then go to BU (sorry, Matty, for the cussing; that's just the fact of the matter). I saw him with the Friars and he did not stand out, but again, he was badly banged up. This literal change of scenery should serve him well.

 

thank you Dan. This explains it. I knew half the story, but didn't understand some things like why play for the Pentiction team vs staying in college. I hope he gets himself straightened out as the Flyers took him #19th overall and that's a high pick to waist if he's a bust.

Well, the short answer is you cannot leave a college for another one and play right away. You have to sit out a year when you transfer, (in most cases). In hockey, players have an option unlike a football player transferring. This is why he's heading out to beautiful British Columbia.

 

yes transferring DI to DI in most sports is hard and still play and not sit out. there are some odd loopholes in this to pull it off and in some cases the player has to have permission even to transfer to a specific school. most cases their former coach will make sure he doesn't go to a direct rival of theirs (football) and sends them away from their school and conference.

 

NCAA hockey a month away. BC had their first practice last week, couple of alums there to hop on the ice afterwards.
