Reimer traded to Hurricanes by Panthers for Darling, draft pick
Florida plans to buy out acquisition; makes move four days after Luongo retires...

James Reimer was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes by the Florida Panthers on Sunday for Scott Darling and a sixth-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft.

The 31-year-old goalie was 13-12-5 with a 3.09 goals-against average and a .900 save percentage in 36 games (29 starts) for Florida this season, his third with the Panthers, who signed him to a five-year contract on July 1, 2016. (NHL.com)

Smith to sign in Edmonton, Talbot in Calgary...

It appears Mike Smith will be moving north this summer.

TSN’s Frank Seravalli reported Sunday that the unrestricted free agent goalie will sign with the Edmonton Oilers when the free agency window opens on Monday. Smith is set to join the Calgary Flames’ bitter rivals, a team he held the crease for the past two seasons.

Smith is coming off a particularly poor season with a .898 save percentage after splitting time with David Rittich, who is now the favored netminder in the Flames organization despite Smith getting the crease in a disappointing first-round playoff exit.

Seravalli also confirmed that Cam Talbot is heading the other way and will join the Flames Monday. While Talbot finished last season with the Philadelphia Flyers after getting shipped there at the trade deadline, he spent most of the past four seasons with the Oilers.

The reported moves leave the goaltending pool down two members.

Sergei Bobrovsky is expected to sign with Florida, leaving Robin Lehner, Semyon Varlamov and Petr Mrazek as the three top adds heading into Monday.

It would seem that both Alberta teams are now out of the running for any of those signatures, although they may never have been in the race regardless. Not everyone wants to play in Edmonton and unless they want to be a part of a tandem in Calgary, there are better starting options elsewhere, and likely money, too. (NBC PHT)

Bob in Florida is a huge deal, in my opinion. Great for the Panthers.

The Canes had both goalies signed last year for $2.3M and now they're paying $3.4M to just one who is arguably worse. I wonder why the Panthers didn't just buy out Reimer.

This doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I'm pretty pissed that this is the route Tallon went. He prizes draft picks far too much, and this is going to be a cap hit that they simply shouldn't absorb, end of story. This is a massive mistake, and may be the difference a successful post-season run and not being enough. I'll explain:

Buying out Reimer would have meant a sub-$1 million cap hit this year, as well as for 2021 and 2022. But it would've been a $3.2 million cap hit next year, in 2020.

Buying out Darling is a $1.2 cap hit this year, and in 2021 / 2022. However, it's only a $2.3 cap hit next year, in comparison to Reimer.

So, for three years, you spend $.6-8 mil more against the cap, for that same amount of savings in 2020. They probably decided that was too much to absorb at once. But spreading it out doesn't help, either.

$1.2 mil can be the difference in adding a bottom 6 F or supplementary Dman that they'll need in order to be a post-season worthy roster. It's not a huge sum of money, but if you're just that close, and come up that short...

Give up a 2nd or 3rd and send Reimer off, if you need rid of the salary that badly. That draft pick is not going to ruin your franchise over the next three to four years, which is the window that you are desperately trying to hit. However, one and a half million less cap room can be a serious detriment. I don't understand this in the slightest. This is another example of Tallon not wanting to part with draft picks / prospects, and leaving the roster incomplete (in this case, potentially incomplete) as a trade-off.

Ultimately, it's not the biggest deal. It's not a massive sum of money. But it will weigh over the franchise for the next four years, and will be an obstacle. This could've been avoided.

I'm not counting anything until there's a signature on a contract. This is a big deal for the franchise.

Florida expected to sign Brett Connolly to a 4 year deal. He's fine but at what cost? the reports are putting it at a $3.5 aav. too much for that team, they already have middle/bottom 6 Ws. could mean Bob is in but Panarin is not.

  12. dlinebass5 M.V.P. Bears

This is the prevailing theory. Word is that Panarin will get $12 mil in NYI, Bobrovsky will get just under $10 mil in FLA. Frankly, FLA couldn't support both of those contracts. I was never on the "Panarin or bust" train. I would rather have the goalie and add to the D.

But you're right - Connolly is an add to a team that has a lot of F talent coming up who could be playing in the bottom 6. That F talent should've been dealt for D assets, but we'll table that conversation... I think the problem is that FLA is completely void of tougher F's. All of the guys coming up, all of the top liners - all super skilled but not physical guys. And we just watched a Stanley Cup that proved you need those guys, beyond shadow of a doubt. Coach Q knows that, too. I think signing Connolly is an effort to try and get some of that on board, in whatever shape they can. He can play on the 3rd/2nd line as they need him. I don't think $3.5 is all too much for him - but I do think it guarantees the exclusion of Panarin.

The Sabres get Jimmy Vesey from the Rangers for only a 3rd round pick.

Vesey is under contract in 2019-2020. This frees up almost $3 million on the cap for NYR. Buffalo gets him for one year, and ability to extend him before he becomes an UFA next year.

This is a cap clearing move for Panarin. I think this is a pretty clear sign that that's where he's going. Getting a 3rd and Panarin is a win for NYR.

Yes, the first press release had it wrong, the Sabres have him for at least a year and then he'll be a UFA.

Isn’t this the 2nd 3rd rounder Buff has given up for Vesey? At least this one worked.

I'm gonna miss riding Vesey's ass this year when the Rags come to Denver.

Hearing a lot of chatter about Hoffman going from the Panthers to the Sabres. That's a move I could get behind. No, it's not for Risto - hearing Jake McCabe and Evan Rodriques (one of the best UDFA signings evah!)
