Ravens QB coach: Ball coming out cleaner for Lamar Jackson...

Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson might have been the last to know that the team is installing an entirely new offense this offseason, but the focus of his efforts to improve on his rookie season was clear before that revelation.

Jackson has to become a more effective thrower after helping Baltimore to the playoffs with his running skills last year. Jackson remained in the thick of that process while at organized team activities last month and it will certainly continue into training camp this summer.

Quarterbacks coach James Urban has seen growth on the mechanical front with the offseason program wrapping up this week.

“You’re always chasing consistency,” Urban said, via Dan Graziano of ESPN.com. “Consistency in terms of throwing accurately, the mechanics involved, repeating the motion. They certainly haven’t been eliminated, but there are much fewer, ‘Where-did-that-come-froms’ this year when we watch him practice. It looks better in many ways. The ball comes out cleaner, the timing looks better.”

Getting Jackson to a point where you’re never asking where a particular throw came from would be a big feather in Urban’s coaching cap and a big plus for a Ravens team that went all-in on the 2018 first-round pick this year. - PFT

Tom Brady rakes in another $2.35 million in royalties...

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has a grossly below-market deal when it comes to football earnings. When it comes to earnings for jerseys, video games, and trading cards, he earns more than anyone else in the league.

According to Daniel Kaplan of TheAthletic.com, Brady raked in $2.35 million in NFLPA endorsements, based on the union’s most recent filing. That’s over and above his individual earnings from deals with companies like UGG and UnderArmour.

Brady saw his extra earnings drop from $2.5 million for the last calendar year, but he’s still at the top for all players. Coming in second for the current years is Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, whose $2 million nearly matches his $2.025 million salary for 2019.

Raiders receiver Antonio Brown finished in third place, with $1.5 million. Other notable earners include Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield, who made $1.156 million, and Jets quarterback, who made $1.04 million.

Brady’s earnings don’t begin to bridge the gap between his current NFL playing contract and the on-field money earned by other players. His popularity underscores that he could be (and should be) getting more. (PFT)

John Elway: “We finally feel pretty good” about quarterback position

Since the Broncos won Super Bowl 50 and quarterback Peyton Manning limped off into the sunset, Denver has had a tough time finding a good quarterback. G.M. John Elway acknowledged that on Wednesday.

“It’s a hard position to fill,” Elway told reporters, via comments distributed by the team. “We tried to shake all these trees around here the last four years and quarterbacks didn’t fall out of it. It’s difficult, but we’ve taken a lot shots. We’ve tried a lot of different situations, and I’ve felt like that was the way to go until we got it solidified. Hopefully with Joe [Flacco] this year, we’ve got it solidified with Drew [Lock] learning underneath him. It’s been a battle, but this league is a battle. It’s a tough situation, especially at that position. We’re excited or at least I’m excited about where we are at that position now.”

Elway also reiterated something he first said earlier this year about the current state of Flacco’s career.

“We just felt that with Joe coming in, getting him in a trade, and where he is in his career, we feel like he’s in his prime,” Elway said. “At least we hope he is. To have a young guy like Drew learn under him and be able to kind of solidify that position for a while — obviously we’ve been looking for one since Peyton [Manning] retired. That’s always a difficult position to fill, but we finally feel pretty good about that position and where we are.”

It’s clear, if it wasn’t already, that Flacco is the guy.

“I think that what Joe proved and showed everybody on our football team was that he can be that guy,” Elway said. “Our team has really responded to him well, and I think Joe’s ready to take that spot over. He’s going to make our defense better, and what’s going to make our defense better is that we’re going to play better on the offensive side, which is the goal, because we’ve struggled there the last couple years. If we play as well as we think we can on the offensive side, it’ll make us that much better on defense.”

Elway also thinks that Flacco’s return to a familiar system coupled with the fact that the Ravens gave up on him will provide motivation.

“Joe’s best years were in that system,” Elway said. “Combining all that with Joe — anytime you get traded midway in your career or two-thirds of the way through your career, you’ve got something to prove.”

Flacco has something to prove. And the Broncos have plenty to prove, in a division where it won’t be easy to prove much of anything. For the first time since the early ’70s, the Broncos have had back to back losing seasons. Elway is counting on Flacco to keep that streak from running to three.

Mark Sanchez retiring from NFL after 10 seasons...

The Sanchize is finished for good.

Veteran quarterback Mark Sanchez is retiring after 10 years in the NFL, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported.

The former quarterback is reportedly taking a college football analyst job at ABC/ESPN, per the New York Post's Andrew Marchand.

The No. 5 overall pick by the New York Jets in 2009 after leaving USC early (much to the chagrin of then-coach Pete Carroll), Sanchez was hailed as the signal-caller who would finally end the cycle of QB-poverty for Gang Green.

Dubbed "Sanchize," the franchise quarterback got off to a good start under Rex Ryan, helping the Jets to back-to-back AFC Championship games in his first two seasons, which included playoff wins over Peyton Manning's Colts, Tom Brady's Patriots, Carson Palmer's Bengals, and Philip Rivers' Chargers. The hype surrounding those first two seasons rose to a palpable level after Ryan's defense did most of the hefty lifting. As the Jets attempted to give Sanchez more responsibility, the QB's career took a nosedive.

The lasting, most indelible memory most of the public will have of Sanchez is the infamous "Butt Fumble," on Thanksgiving, 2012, against the New England Patriots, in which the QB ran directly into the rear-end of his guard Brandon Moore, and lost the ball that was returned for a defensive touchdown.

After five seasons with the Jets, it became clear Sanchez was not the franchise QB he'd been crowned when drafted. The Sanchize then became a journeyman and veteran mentor. He played two seasons for the Philadelphia Eagles, starting 10 total games, one year as a backup for the Dallas Cowboys and another with the Chicago Bears.

Last year, the 32-year-old latched on to the Washington Redskins. After injuries decimated Jay Gruden's QB room, Sanchez was forced onto the field, where it was immediately clear he no longer belonged. In his lone start, the signal-caller lasted less than three quarters, completing six of 14 attempts for 38 yards, took five sacks and threw two interceptions before being benched in a blowout loss to the New York Giants. He never saw the field again.

Sanchez ends his decade-long career in the NFL compiling 15,357 yards on 56.6 completion percentage with 86 TDs, 89 INTs and a 73.2 passer rating.

Washington QB competition “might come down to the wire”

Left tackle Trent Williams isn’t at Washington’s training camp, but Dwayne Haskins, Case Keenum and Colt McCoy are all on hand and ready to get the team’s quarterback competition rolling.

Head coach Jay Gruden discussed that competition when he spoke with reporters on Wednesday and suggested that it will roll on for quite a while. He didn’t rule out making a decision about who starts as late as the days before their Week One game against the Eagles.

“We got to give these guys opportunities to make plays and see which one is the best,” Gruden said, via NBCSportsWashington.com. “It might come down to the wire.”

McCoy was recovering from a leg injury in the spring, but is now ready to take on the same workload as his fellow quarterbacks. Gruden said the work will be split equally between the three men until they reach a point where they’ve decided which of the players gives the team its best chance of winning.

I remeber in the Kordell Stewart era back in 96 when the Steelers had a 3 headed monster QB competition. No one was ready and it showed. Pick a guy and give him the most reps going into the season. Then he'll be more ready.

    Juat my opinion.

Detroit Lions wide receiver Marvin Jones caught a touchdown pass in the back corner of the end zone at Ford Field on Friday, an ordinary play for any NFL receiver during training camp.

Instead of quarterback Matthew Stafford making the throw, however, it was 14-year-old Calder Hodge.

The incoming high school freshman suffered from fibular hemimelia, a rare birth defect, and had both of his legs amputated when he was three. But he loves football, and Stafford is his favorite player.

On Friday, Hodge just thought he was headed to watch Stafford and the rest of the Lions’ quarterbacks work out on the field.

“They were walking me over to the sidelines so I could watch the quarterbacks warm up and Matthew Stafford called me over and it just all happened,” Hodge said, via ESPN’s Michael Rothstein. “He said, all right, you want to throw a fade ball? And I said yeah.”

So he did, and he hit Jones perfectly.

    August 2, 2019

    Instantly, the team swarmed Hodge.

“It was awesome, you know,” Stafford said, via ESPN. “But as cool as it was for him, it's just as cool or maybe cooler for us. He's getting to come out here and throw a touchdown pass to Marvin Jones, but just seeing what he's gone through in his life up to this point and how he's had such an amazing attitude and overcome so much, it's really kind of inspirational for us.

“I'm sure it's a big deal for him. But man, we watched a video about him today in our team meeting and it was incredible. It was cool to have him out here.”

Hodge plays football himself, and dreams of becoming the first double amputee quarterback in the NFL. He plays with two special prosthetics that have computerized knees, according to ESPN, which offer more stability and control.

"I'm not too fast. I'm a pocket quarterback,” Hodge said, via ESPN. “I mean, I run as fast as I can."

After sticking around for training camp on Sunday, Hodge will start practice at Legacy the School of Sports Sciences just north of Houston on Monday. There, he’ll get a chance to play football for real for what feels like the first time.

    Naturally, Hodge is thrilled.

“It means the world,” Hodge said, via ESPN. “Now I have an actual chance to go out and fight for a starting job to fulfill my dream of playing football.”

Through a week of training camp practices, the Redskins have made little headway in figuring out who their starting quarterback will be - the three candidates remain neck-and-neck.

Case Keenum, Dwayne Haskins, and Colt McCoy have all shown a number of positive signs so far, but there hasn't been a player to separate from the pack just yet. If you had to name a leader at the moment, it would probably be Keenum, due to his experience, but that could change at any time.

The preseason officially kicks off for Washington on Thursday when they face off against the Cleveland Browns. While the QB that starts in that game won't necessarily be the starter for the regular season, it will at least give us all a chance to see how the team might view their hierarchy of signal-callers.

It also appears that we can expect to see that decision sometime soon.

(Gruden said he will pick a, not necessarily the starter, Tuesday)

The ultimate decision holds little weight going forward - teams rarely deploy a cemented roster in the first week of the preseason. However, it will be a great litmus test for how the QB competition is going in Washington.

How is Colt McCoy in that conversation? Case Keenum has done it before, Haskins has the potential to do it the best and then McCoy has...... a cool name and terrible track record?

  18. Lyman "Franchise Asshole" Browns Buckeyes

Terrible track record? The majority of his track record was with Cleveland !!! Even Tom Brady would have sucked with the lack of talent on those teams.

Since then, he's been a backup to Kurt Cousins and Alex Smith. He's every bit as good as Case Keenum. (back handed compliment)

  19. mattymcgee55 Legend Patriots Bruins

No way Colt McCoy is as good as Keenum. Im not defending Keenum or even pretending he's better than average but he has gotten it done to a degree in the past.
Colt McCoy cant win with anyone and is far below an average NFL qb.

The Philadelphia Eagles will not be adding another quarterback any time soon.

Eagles coach Doug Pederson reaffirmed his stance Saturday that his team will move forward with two backup quarterbacks, Cody Kessler and Clayton Thorson, in the wake of Nate Sudfeld's injury.

"There's really not a lot to be said about the quarterback position," Pederson told reporters. "We're very comfortable with the two we have. They are going to get a lot of work now these next several weeks obviously in practice. It's like any other position on our football team. If we see the need to add depth and value, we will, but at this time we're confident with the guys we have and moving forward."

Sudfeld underwent surgery Friday to repair his broken wrist, an injury sustained in the Eagles' preseason opener. While Pederson declined to provide an exact timeline for Sudfeld's return, he did state it is not a season-ending injury and the Eagles should "get him back soon."

Pederson was mum when asked about the team's plans should Sudfeld not be ready to go by the season opener and if the QB sustains more injuries.

"These are all things we look at," Pederson said. "We still got time. There's still three weeks of camp till we have to make those decisions. Obviously those are decisions that when we get closer we'll have to make."

Pederson has no current plans to change Carson Wentz's preseason plans.

"The plan is to get through today and get through this practice and go evaluate this practice and I'll worry about tomorrow, tomorrow."

Kessler signed with the team in May, one week after his release from the Jaguars. The Eagles selected Thorson in the fifth round of the 2019 draft. Both will have the opportunity for the remainder of camp to embrace additional workload.
