Adam Fox plays for Hahvahd. His rights were traded, but he is not under contract.

Adam Fox was a pretty substantial part of the Hanifin/Hamilton deal. He had informed Carolina that he would wait the year out and hit FA next summer. Carolina did what they had to and recouped some assets, Rags get a stud D for the future.

Yeah. Fox, despite playing for Hahvahd (sucks!) was going to be bigger deal than Jimmy "shithead" Vesey was when he went to UFA after four years in college.

I assume the only reason the Rags gave up two nice assets is because they'll get him sooner. They could have had him for free if they'd waited until Aug. 15, 2020.

The Canes did extremely well to get the two picks under the circumstances.

The NYR have signed Adam Fox to an ELC. I think they'd have gotten him eventually but now have him a year sooner. Still, two seconds* is a lot to give up for the extra year. (* The 2019 2nd is assured. The 2020 3rd is real likely to convert to a 2nd.)

It does seem steep and I agree that he was likely to sign with the Rangers anyway. This just gets a really good semi developed prospect in the fold. I think Buffalo actually helped set the market for this with the Vesey trade, obviously a bit different but still along the same lines.

That would Tim Murray that set the market; they sent a 3rd to Nashville for exclusive talking rights for Vesey. The big difference is they did that in May the year he was going to become a UFA. All Jimmy "the shithead" had to do was wait until Aug. 15.

Fox gets to go the team he wanted to sign with a whole extra season earlier. If he plays 30 NHL games in '19-20, the 2020 3rd becomes a 2nd. He's good enough, I think, to get a half-season + his rookie year.

He might be good enough to step right in.
I’d slow play Fox regardless. Not often a D can just step in and make that jump from college to NHL. NYR should be weak next year and they could do damage to the kid by throwing him out there for multiple-4 nights.

It’s funny how Vesey seems to have wound up being his own worst enemy. He could’ve stepped right in to an ideal situation in Nashville. Instead he’s on a terrible team fighting for minutes. Buffalo probably would’ve been a better situation for him too.

The Athletic, (a very credible source), is reporting that PIT and MIN have had extensive talks featuring TEH Phil going to the Wild with Zucker going to the Pens. There'd be a couple of other guys switching sweaters (Jack Johnson & Victor Rask), but those are the key pieces. From the report this deal could be done as soon as (and if) Kessel approves it; evidently the Wild are not one of the 8 teams that he has pre-approved.

I expect that PIT will try to get things going with some of the 8 teams that they do not have to ask permission; if for no other reason than to leverage trade talks. I think the word of TEH Phil being on the outs in Pittsburgh is probably going to prove to be true.

Talk about Ristolainen being moved from Buffalo is much less likely to be proven correct.

Kessel unlikely to be traded by Penguins, GM says: report
Pittsburgh also expected to keep Malkin, could make changes on defense...

Phil Kessel is unlikely to be traded by the Pittsburgh Penguins, general manager Jim Rutherford told The Athletic on Tuesday.

"I think that's the way things are headed at this point in time," Rutherford told the website. "I expect Kessel will probably play for Pittsburgh next season."

The 31-year-old forward had 82 points (27 goals, 55 assists) in 82 games for the Penguins this season after he had an NHL career-high 92 points (34 goals, 58 assists) in 82 games in 2017-18.

"First of all, he's a good player," Rutherford said. "He's been a good player for us. It's not as if we have to trade him.

"You have to understand that he has a (partial) no-trade clause and a lot of leverage. In situations like this, it usually doesn't work out so well for the team. That's just the way it is. So at this point, it looks to me that he will return at this season. That's how I'm proceeding moving forward."

Kessel, who was selected by the Boston Bruins with the No. 5 pick in the 2006 NHL Draft, has 823 points (357 goals, 466 assists) in 996 NHL games over 13 seasons with the Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs and Penguins. (NHL.com)

Holy shit, for a $6.8M caphit he's come through on his end.
Nylander may never get over 22 goals and 61 pts at a $6.9M hit.

Well, that's not what you want to hear a GM say. Not exactly engendering confidence, or a sign that they actively want Kessel. Youch.

What this means is that Kessel will either be the one approving the trade, or the teams who want him will have to throw more in the pot for him. I'm sure the GM is providing a bit of bait for the teams that want him, with the latter - telling them to pony up.

Agreed… doesn't sound much like a vote of confidence. Might make Kessel wanna leave all the more. Its really the exact opposite of what a player would like to hear.

Strictly my opinion - I don't think the players care all that much of what management does / says. At the end of the day, if you have a partial NMC, and you know the team is shopping you, those comments probably aren't all that surprising / impactful. But it is an odd thing for a GM to say. Usually, if you're keeping the guy, you talk him up - either to give the impression that he's significant to your team or could be significant to someone else's. So it's an odd play from the GM.

I view this more as posturing by the Pens rather than a literal expression that he will be back.

This is my translation for what Rutherford is really saying: "Kessel (mofucker!) torpedoed our effort to move him to MN. He wants to go to the team that he wants to go to, and he thinks he holds the cards. Well. Kessel (fucker!) does not hold the cards - the Pens do since he's under contract. He'll accept a trade that works for us, or he'll simmer on the bench in Pittsburgh. (Can't wait to get this asswipe outta town!)"

Flyers retain 30% of the Gudas contract plus take on a $5.75M caphit on Niskanen for two years.

Odd that Flecher seems so accommodating to a div. rival with cap relief. I'm sure he was antsy to move on from Gudas. I think it also sets the table for another Philly deal.

    30% of gudas salary?

Sabres and NYR are in discussions concerning Jimmy Vesey.
