No asterisk needed for the Titans. I already disavowed their two votes to get the tie and subsequent win due to the tie breaker and declared Rocky the winner.
I didn't see anyone, including you, who volunteered to set up the round 1 brackets. I basically stuffed them into 8 brackets based on the order in which they were nominated.
i didnt know that's how it was going to go. we listed the top sports movies and it trickled down from the top to bottom. and you didn't ask for help. we had a list for a few days and boom, you made the brackets. i would've chipped in if asked.
We had a list for a few hours and you started pissing and moaning about your thread getting hijacked.
I didn't understand any of this nonsense. What just happened? Remember the Titans was the winner, and now they're not? What mumbo-jumbo is this???
What most of you don't know is that I spent the vast majority of my professional career working with statistics. What most of you may suspect is that I spent a considerable amount of time tracking this whole exercise through all four rounds. This is what I determined: I posted a notice about this exercise in the same five forums at the beginning of each round. As a result, we averaged 21 members who actually voted in rounds 1 through 3. It's a reasonable assumption that, if the same demographic population is alerted, the same number of members will participate. The Final Round generated 27 votes (actually 25 - more on this follows). In rounds 1 through 3, the results of virtually every bracket (there were 16 of them) would fit inside of a statistical normal curve. The only two that didn't both occured in the 1st round before the movies were seeded within a bracket based on the prior round's result. The results of the Final Round, not only didn't fit within a statistical normal curve, it bordered on being a statistical impossibility. Based on those findings, the only logical conclusion I could come to was that there was some form of skulduggery in play intended to manipulate the final result. I confess. I fought fire with fire and "manufactured" the final two votes for Remember the Titans in order to create the tie. I only needed a tie because I knew what the tie-breaker would be (my exercise - my rules). The surprising thing to me was how easy it was to recruit members to go along with me. So . . . There you have it. Those of you who still want to claim Rocky the winner - go for it. Just put an asterisk next to it.
Lyman, this is an instance where I'm going to admit to being a simpleton. There was "skullduggery" afoot? What happened? Did someone Russia the vote? Edit: I very much appreciate your background in statistics. It's all foreign to me. So I could use the explanation meant for the lowest common denominator...
bc it was hijacked. wtf lyman we all thanked you for your time and efforts making the polls, bracket and contest. now you're coming off as all bitter for some reason. and i gave you a hot girl too and promised not to tell Mrs. Lyman !
Save that asterisk for Denzel Washington’s ass so it can mark the spot where they need to place the jack to get his knocked out ass off the floor.
Okay, here goes . . . The demographics of this site don't really change that much - basically it's a constant. The vast majority of the members frequent the same forums and/or boards every time they log on. So when I mentioned that I posted invites to vote in this exercise in the same five locations for each round, it is reasonable to expect the same number of voters in each round. And, in fact, for rounds 1 through 3 we did get an average of 21 voters for each round. However, when I posted the invite to vote in the Final Round in the same exact locations, that number jumped to 25 voters (I'm not even counting the 2 votes that I fessed up to manufacturing). Something occured that caused that 4 member spike in voting. That's almost a 20% increase in voting members. Couple that with the fact that 14 of the 16 brackets voted on in rounds 1 through 3 returned results that would fit in a normal distribution curve. (The only 2 that didn't were both in the 1st round probably because the movies were not yet seeded within the brackets because there was no prior bracket results by which they could be seeded.) Any data set of results will always fall within a normal curve unless they are influenced by some "assignable cause" (ie: non seeded brackets). If you have ever been graded "on a curve", the same statistical principles apply. That brings me to the vote results from the Final Round. Not only did the results not fit within a normal distribution curve, they bordered on a statistical impossibility unless they were influenced by an outside "assignable cause". My educated opinion is that sometime during the open poll period (I'm guessing around day 4), members of this site were recruited to vote for a specific movie. By whom? I have my suspicions but I'll let you draw your own conclusions.
no idea what or who you're talking about ? no one slipped an envelope under my door telling me to vote one way or another. how about another probability -- that your assumptions were wrong and no one influenced anything ?
