so hitting to you is the main key to playing hockey? what about skating and crisp passes, defending and scoring ? isn't the finnish league a no check league? they still play plenty of hockey though, so no hitting is not the #1 skill set to playing hockey !

“More injuries “? This is the way it’s always been. More than what? More than zero hitting? I’m sure that’s probably true but that isn’t hockey.
As for Ferland “flying 1 or 2 feet”, what do you propose? Should he slow down and ask the guy fumbling the puck in the NZ if he would be ok with getting hit?

  3. Catfish Guest

fumbling the puck. you would fucking say anything to hit him. it doesn't matter if he doesn't have the puck, has the puck, passes the puck or fumbling the puck. you have shown time and time again on here - if his head is down - hit him and in most cases level him. some hits are legal. some are not. some are vicious with no regard to the warfare of the other player.

why do you think the NFL has added all these extra rules for safety reasons and less blows to the head ? the NHL is behind the times and when the lawsuits start to roll in about concussions and CTE cases, these hits with the players head down will be the first thing they go after to try and remove from the game. plenty of ways to play legal hockey. i don't see how you and Will are ok with all these hits with the players head down as ok and "that's how hockey is played?"

catfish, of course it matters if the player getting hit has possession of the puck. Hockey 101, get real. The fact that you wrote that speaks volumes about your knowledge of this subject. Not sure if it’s ignorance, you just standing your ground or a troll job but you’re out of your league here.

why bc you played college hockey 45 yrs ago and you're the expert?

  6. mattymcgee55 Legend Patriots Bruins

No, because I know what constitutes interference

  7. Catfish Guest

you didn't say anything about having the puck. the hit last week with boston, the puck was moving away from the player hit. you didn't say dick about the puck location. nor did you say it until now. you said hitting is a part of hockey and you get hit when you have your head down.

  8. Catfish Guest

omg haha. anything else? now it's interference. then it was play with your head down and get hit. then it was "it's a part of the fundamentals of hockey."

  9. mattymcgee55 Legend Patriots Bruins

False, I said the player with the possession of the puck (Anderson) needs to keep his head up.

  10. mattymcgee55 Legend Patriots Bruins

Not having puck possession would be interference. It’s simple.
    What else you got?

i'll end this now bf it gets out of control....im just not in favor of dropping the hammer on these guys ie scott stevens - eric lindros for playing with their heads down. and that is not the first thing i think of for the fundamentals of hockey. a clean hit is great. interference is getting called more often. hitting a guy with his head down while he tries to find the puck is great for the hitting team, but the welfare of the player, any player is at great risk.

    carry on.

or boarding, or roughing. to me it's the stance of "play with your head down and it's ok to be hit if the puck is near you." im not in favor of that. like the hit last week as we discussed. the bruins player doesn't have to hit him. he chooses too.

  13. mattymcgee55 Legend Patriots Bruins

Yes, hockey players choose to hit one another.

  14. Catfish Guest

clean and unclean. the league doesn't seem to care which.

I think this has largely played itself out. But, bear in mind a few things:
    - Players are coached/taught to keep their heads up from a very early age. There is a great deal of logic behind that. It IS fundamental hockey. Failing to keep your head up is, therefore, fundamentally fucked up and no player should ever be excused for it.
    - Hockey is a physical game. It will always be a physical game, and always should be physical. If someone does not accept that, then I invite them to watch icecapades.
    - The NHL has stricter policies about hits because owners get a load of shit in their britches thinking about concussions and future lawsuit settlements.
    - To me, it's assine to place total blame on a guy that plays the game the way he's always been coached, and give a pass to the guy that does not listen to coaches (or to logic).

In the end, I side with Matty. I believe you both know the game well. Matty is, IMO, on much more solid footing for the case he lays out. That's my opinion - it's not intended to be confrontational.

But if owners want to truly DO something about concussions then they need to confront the issue from all angles. Again, IMO.

his case was it's interference then versus a penalty. to me the game is too fast for every one to keep their heads up the entire time. the puck gets loose or in between 2 or 3 players or the boards for a few seconds. who is talented enough to not look down for it ? come on now guys? many players look down on these scrums for the puck. to me that isn't an invite to nail them. that isn't what hockey is all about.

there's a difference between a clean hit and a hit because the player has his head down. he doesn't know it's coming. like a blindside hit. the impacts like the video above is a bone crushing jarring hit. to me that's not legal. and it has nothing to do with interference. it's cross checking, boarding etc. and i think a pro hockey player knows the rules Dan about keeping his head down, but in some cases, they can't help it. again the game is fast and the puck gets between 2 or 3 or 4 guys -- where is it ? they gotta look down sometimes.

    We disagree, but that's ok.

    Doesn't make it illegal.

Only Schmuck Flyers players cant dangle without staring at the puck... sheesh.

    :p

The NHL now suspends players for hits that were legal not long ago. If the idea is to prevent concussions (and for whatever reason, that IS the reason), then institute rules that makes the so-called victim think twice about his stupid actions.

Really don’t know what you’re talking about. I said that hitting a player without the puck is interference. That’s the easy first factor in determining if a player is open season. Would think that’s understood among a group that has watched hockey.
Hitting a player with possession with their head down is always in play, literally always. I hate cross sport comparisons catfish but you seem to be a fan so I’ll play your game. Hitting a guy with his head down with possession of the puck is similar to hitting a running back with his eyes closed and possession in the backfield. It’s his fault. The same reason why most NHL players take ownership of these kind of hits hits, including Josh Anderson and Matt Gryelcyk in these specific instances.

Dan all players look down every once in a while. they don't have time to think at the speed they are moving and the speed of the game and the play itself.
