Brady was #4 on the depth chart in 2000 and worked his way to be the backup in 2001. He also had a much better preseason than Bledsoe in 2001.
Not claiming anything was expected and who knows what would have happened had Bledsoe not gone down, but if theres ever been a coach that would pull the plug on the well paid vet to go with a kid, he's was guy on the sideline.

but 1 or 2 rings and it's an incredible run by brady over bledsoe. 9 SB appearances and a staggering 6 wins??> that's what im talking about. i don't think old drew bledsoe does that if he never got hit by Lewis. Hell a hybrid of Manning, Unitas, Tarkenton and Marino couldn't win 6 Super Bowls, so Drew wasn't pulling it off. hahahahhahahaha

    This is definitely true.

but a year earlier Kraft said he paid Bledsoe to lock up "one of the greatest Patriots ever." 1 rough preseason and Belichick would've benched his new $110 million dollar man ?? hard to fathom if both are healthy !!

Hard to fathom but I think matty's point was if there is a coach in existence who would do something like that...Belichick is that guy. And I'd agree with that.

That isn't saying he definitely would have...but I think when you look at what he's done over his career he wouldn't be beholden to Bledsoe because of his contract.

The real question is if Belichick would have gotten that kind of leeway from Kraft without winning a SB first. Belichick has a stranglehold on moves the Patriots make and has for a while because of the success he's had....but was his command of the team that strong in 2000/2001? If he had sat a $100 million dollar man and started a 6th round pick instead based on performance/expectation/potential instead of injury....would Kraft have allowed that?

I think there are some good hypotheticals, no matter how meaningless they are in hindsight, in that conversation.

The Patriots did trade a first rd draft pick to obtain the services of Belichik. Best spent pick in their history.

Wasn't that compensation forced by the league after the fact?

Either way it was a good trade

Seahawks reach one-year deal with Ziggy Ansah...

The Seattle Seahawks are expected to sign former Detroit Lions defensive end Ziggy Ansah to a one-year deal, a source confirmed to PFT.

The agreement was first reported by Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. Ansah is expected to sign the deal with the team on Thursday after flying to Seattle.

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said at the conclusion of the NFL Draft that they weren’t done adding to their pass rush this offseason. Even with the selection of TCU’s L.J. Collier in the first round, the trading of Frank Clark to the Kansas City Chiefs had left Seattle lacking proven pass rush ability.

“There is work that we’re engaged in [during] this stage of filling up the roster and we’re very involved in what is coming up next,” Carroll said. “We’re not done, we have work to do. We’re excited about what’s coming up and you guys will see in time.”

Ansah is recovering from shoulder surgery and is expected to be ready to go by the middle of training camp at the latest.

Ansah has twice posted seasons with at least 10 sacks during his time in Detroit. He had 14.5 sacks in 2015 and 12.0 sacks in 2017. He appeared in just seven games last season for Detroit due to injuries.

With the compensatory free agent threshold having past, the Seahawks were free to sign Ansah without losing one of four expected compensatory draft picks in next year’s draft.

The last time Seattle signed a former Lions defensive end to a one-year deal, it turned out pretty well. Cliff Avril eventually spent five years in Seattle and compiled 36.5 sacks over his tenure with the team. The Seahawks will be hoping Ansah can provide a similar boon to their defensive front.

UPDATE 11:50 p.m. ET: Per Adam Schefter of ESPN.com, the deal is worth $5.5 million in guaranteed money with roughly $8 million more available in incentives. (PFT)

great post BWW. to me he - Bleichick doesn't sit bledsoe if he's not hurt. 0-2 means little in the NFL and since he just signed Bledsoe to a $100+ deal, he has a lot of leeway. 0-6 is a different story. Brady would've sat until Bledsoe got so bad, changes had to be made. 0-2 is not the time to change QBs if Bledsoe was healthy. I don't think Kraft allows it either. He just gave Bledsoe a huge contract and wants to sit him for a 6th rd QB? I don't think Kraft takes that chance.

Seahawks release Doug Baldwin, Kam Chancellor...

It’s been known for a while that wide receiver Doug Baldwin‘s future was in doubt after a series of injuries that resulted in three offseason surgeries and it seems the Seahawks don’t believe he’ll be able to play again.

The Seahawks released Baldwin with a failed physical designation on Thursday. There was word recently that Baldwin was leaning toward retiring, but he would have owed the Seahawks $2.8 million if he did that before being released.

Safety Kam Chancellor has been in a similar spot over the last two years because of the neck injury that ended his playing career. He was also released on Thursday with the same designation.

“The Seahawks have made the difficult decision to terminate/failed physical Doug Baldwin and Kam Chancellor,” General manager John Schneider said in a statement. “These are two of the most iconic players in franchise history and both were instrumental in establishing our championship culture, great examples of competitiveness and leadership on the field and in the community. These legendary players will always be a part of our Seahawks family.”

Baldwin leaves with the second-most touchdown catches and third-most catches and receiving yards in Seahawks history.

The moves don’t change the short-term outlook for the Seahawks as they were not planning to have either player in the lineup this season. It does continue the exodus of players tied to their Super Bowl XLVIII championship. Russell Wilson, Bobby Wagner and K.J. Wright are now the only players on the current roster who played in MetLife Stadium that night. (PFT)

Derek Anderson told the Bills he is retiring. So the #2 will likely be Matt Barkley. Josh Allen better stay healthy. Tyree Jackson likely making the roster now unless they pick up a vet right?

Dolphins make Xavien Howard highest-paid cornerback...

The Dolphins and Xavien Howard have agreed to a deal that will make him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Howard’s record deal is a five-year, $76.5 million extension that includes $46 million guaranteed, per Schefter. It’s the largest extension ever for a cornerback, Schefter adds.

Howard became the subject of trade rumors this offseason after he said he wanted to be the NFL’s highest-paid cornerback, making more than Josh Norman at $15 million per season. Now, he is.

A second-round pick in 2015, Howard made his first Pro Bowl in 2018 when he led the league with seven interceptions and made 12 pass breakups.

Howard has 11 interceptions in his past 17 games. (PFT)

Howard is going to have a very long career in the NFL.

I can see him transitioning from CB to FS when he loses some mirror.

I was a bit surprised he and Chancellor were flat out fired, thought maybe they had some value. Maybe I thought to much of Baldwin...
