Redskins tried to trade him but no luck. Once he hit FA there wasn't too big of a market for LB since all the teams that really needed one signed guys or didnt want to pay for a LB before the draft, especially since their position isn't needed as much as it used to be. I mean less suitors league-wide on average. Washington decided last year when they weren't making the playoffs that they would eat the dead cap and not play him and instead develop a younger guy. At this point he only signed for 1 year because he needs to get paid next offseason and needs a good season. Eagles are a good team to do that on since they are a team he could showcase his skills on with his likely role and the Eagles being a good opportunity knew that and were able to get the number down to $3M. They were probably talking since at least right after the draft and it took this long to agree on a fair number and to work out leverage.
Its intriguing to me they got him that cheap. He's good, period and that signing is an absolute steal that I am very jealous of.
The Raiders signed Trent Brown to a four-year, $66 million deal as a free agent after watching him play well at left tackle for the Patriots last season, but they won’t be putting him in the same spot on their offensive line. Raiders head coach Jon Gruden said on Friday that the team will play Brown at right tackle during the 2019 season. Oakland will keep 2018 first-round pick Kolton Miller at left tackle after he started there during his rookie season. Given the price they paid to get Brown, that move may raise some eyebrows. Brown does have a lot of experience at right tackle after playing the position during his time with the 49ers and he’ll still see some good pass rushers — Von Miller twice in the regular season, for example — despite not being on Derek Carr‘s blind side. Gruden also said that the team will have a competition at left guard with Gabe Jackson set to join Brown on the right side of the line. (PFT)
Not buying that, and you shouldn't have bothered with a response if it was just going to be pulled out of thin air. He was released when free agency started. If someone wanted him, he would've been signed. There's no excuse of 'poor timing' relative to FA and draft. Two ILB's were drafted in the top 10, so I don't know where your "it's not needed" answer comes from. Brown has bounced around the league, and had plenty of inconsistency. Last year was the best of his career, and he was benched (albeit by a struggling Washington team). I'm glad you're excited, Joe. But "huge signing" is only warranted if he has another career year / plays more consistently. If Philadelphia wanted him that badly, they would've signed him prior to now, too.
Not necessarily, I'm pretty sure he was released after that initial wave in free agency. At some point teams stop looking at FA to concentrate on the draft, and teams likely wanted to wait to see how the draft turned out before committing to a more expensive free agent. My question is kind of the opposite: why didn't they wait until May 7th when signings don't affect the compensatory pick formula? Eagles are likely getting a 3rd from Foles, and to be honest I'm drawing a blank as to how active the Eagles were in free agent so I don't know if this signing will affect that too much.
He was released the day that free agency started. I have no problems with Brown. But let's not pretend like the Eagles just stole a premier player for $3 mil.
He's a damn good linebacker, especially at $3M. The Eagles didn't address the linebacker issues in the draft, but now get a pro-bowl, run-stopper for peanuts. I think , fwiw, this is a great deal for the Eagles who have linebacker issues. Maybe "premier" is an overstatement, but he isnt chopped liver either.
And all premier LBs had deals in place during the legal tampering window. I am not calling him elite but he is solid and the market for LB after the first wave went essentially dried up. Redskins thought they could get a trade and screwed him.
considering they didn't draft one and filled other needs, this is a damn solid move for low costs. low money, could be a nice upside and didn't spend a draft pick on the position. wins all around for the Eagles.
Eagles didn't want to sign any compensatory pick affecting FAs nor did they want to spend too much cap space. It's why they let Hicks walk (along with injury history) and why they only got Brown now that the price is $3M. Cut players don't count to the formula.
Those are some of the so called; 'big guns'... looks like they mean business and are willing to spend some big bucks. Interesting.
Richie Incognito working out for Raiders... The Raiders continue to look for new pieces to add to their roster and that search will include veteran offensive lineman Richie Incognito. Mike Garafolo of NFL Media reports that the Raiders will work out Incognito on Monday. Incognito last played for the Bills in 2017 and announced his retirement last year before deciding he wanted to continue playing. The Bills released him, but Incognito never caught on with another team. He did find himself in legal trouble later in the year when he was arrested following an incident at an Arizona funeral home after his father’s death. He pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct last month and was sentenced to to 11 months of probation and a 90-day suspended jail sentence. Incognito was also ordered to undergo a mental health screening and it’s not the first time there have been questions about his mental state since he last played for Buffalo. Garafolo reports Incognito is “feeling well in all aspects” at the moment and we’ll see if he gets a chance to resume his career. (PFT)
Odell Beckham: I plan to turn the Browns into the new Patriots... Odell Beckham is optimistic about his future in Cleveland. Beckham told GQ that he believes he can win multiple Super Bowls, and that the Browns can succeed the Patriots as the best team in the NFL. “I plan on being there for the next five years and trying to bring as many championships there as possible,” he said, “turning [the Browns] into the new Patriots.” Beckham is particularly excited about playing with Baker Mayfield, whom Beckham sees as perhaps the best quarterback in the NFL, after just one season. “I would say he’s next, but I feel like he’s now,” Beckham says. “He’s Brett Favre—he’s going to be a Hall of Famer.” The Browns have undergone a remarkable transformation from the laughingstocks of the NFL to a team people legitimately think could win a Super Bowl. They may not be the “new Patriots” just yet, but no one should laugh when Beckham suggests it. (PFT)
They have definitely made a drastic turnaround to their roster. But some people should really shut up. Win games first....talk smack later.
Brady also earned the right to talk all the trash he wants before he talked at all. Can't stand the Patriots and I'm not a Brady fan....but the guy can whip his willy out in public and smack people with it and it would be okay. And when you win that many Superbowls.....it should be.
BWW beat me to it. I can understand anyone not liking the Pats but theres a difference here.......and the Pats simply dont do it. my thinking in a situation like this, how often does this kind of braggadocious talk work out?
